  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Buying a used Genesis V6 Tech

I don't know. The whole thing kind of sounds fishy, between the deer and the tires. I went to a Hyundai dealership in the Northeast looking for a new V6 and they tried to show me one (loaded) that was a low mile trade. This guy also wanted a SUV--they said he traded the Genesis in on an Escalade at one of their other dealerships. I took a quick look at it and could immediately tell that the right rear quarter panel had been repainted, and not very well--a lot of orange peel. The salesmen said: "Boy you've got better eyes than I do". Yeah right. The story didn't sound right from the start. I could see trading in the Genesis for a CTS or some other sedan (Lexus, Infiniti etc.) but an Escalade? I'd be careful if I were you.

One of the dealers I was considering is selling the car certified...that includes a 100K powertrain warranty according to their site.

This dealer said that the certification power train warranty is being done away with as of September 15th...and their dealer has already stopped doing them completely.

They tried to play off how the power train warranty wouldn't cover much anyways. Now I don't know what decision to make.

OK, everyone....I called another Hyundai dealer and repeated what the other Hyundai dealer said regarding the certification warranty.. I kinda like the black car better, but I can get the burgundy one for nearly the same price, plus it is certified with a power train warranty included.

It just makes me think there might be something wrong with the one I described earlier, causing it to be not certifiable.

The price on the burgundy one is down 31,250. It has 8700 miles, 2009 V6 with Tech package. Certified. No accidents reported.

I think that might be my better option. The big day is Friday.

As has been mentioned, it is hard to gauge the market for these cars used as there just aren't that many out there. But it looks like you found a decent one at a price you like. To me the price looks good especially if it is certified. And based on what I have read, Hyundai is supposed to have a decent certification program. Good luck!

I'd like to offer my findings re the extended warranty issue. I told dealer where I am looking that I would not buy the car without a Hyundai-backed extended warranty. (I keep my cars a long time.) He gave me a copy of info re the Hyundai Protection Plan (HPP). There are two flavors: Plan 4A (Advantage) extends the original 5year/60,000 miles limited warranty to 6years/75,000miles. Plan 4B (Advantage Plus) extends this original limited warranty to 10 years/100,000 miles. I didn't come away with any costs but the document looks official. I'm waiting for the 2010 model to see if the suspension problem has been adressed.

Anyone been quoted a price for these warranties? I realize there is dealer mark-up... I have a cadillac dealer nearby that told me the real price of the bumper to bumper cadillac warranty is $995, and that they charge anywhere between 1500-2000 for it. I might consider the warranty if the dealer isn't making off with half of it.

I traded an 07 Avalon with 5000 miles on a new 07 Escalade ESV. I typically keep vehicles about a year, so what the person traded in for and when is of very little relevance in the overall scheme of things.

The fact that it had an "incident" would be of far more concern to me. I'd get it checked out (Carchex offers a pretty good service from my experience, depending on the area.) I'd also recommend driving it overnight, on all possible road surfaces. It could be like mine (and many others'), have suspension issues and be noisy (compared to other Genesis vehicles) and the owner lost interest and traded it.

Good luck!

Re: why someone let go of a 2009 Genesis, I know a woman who had to "turn her Genesis in" (aka "Repo") because she could no longer keep up the payments. Car was a Silver V6 with 4000 miles on it, in great shape.

I felt bad for her because I know she loved that car, and also because it was her car that I looked over, before I decided to buy a Genesis.

I agree. There have to be some legit reasons people have to unload their vehicle so soon after purchase. Whether it was a bad decision financially, or the car doesn't really fit their need. But whether it is a Genesis or any other vehicle, you have to do your homework and not just rely on the dealer, Carfax, etc. The dealer just wants to move the product. They may not tell you everything, as they don't always practice full disclosure. Either way, have the vehicle checked out thoroughly by a knowlegable 3rd party. If the dealer balks, you need to walk! Good luck!

To me, if a person can't afford the car payments, there's is always the chance that they didn't properly maintain the car either. I suppose it's probably as much a possibility as someone hitting a deer and having only minor damage ;)

I am heading to buy a Genesis tomorrow afternoon... buying the one that was not in an accident - and it is certified. Hopefully tomorrow I will be riding in style...
