  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Can the Genesis Prestige Really (really) Compete?

They compared several specific attributes based on objective tests: 0-60 time, braking, cornering, etc. Do you have a problem with the tests, or just the results? If the Camaro outperformed a Porsche, you don't think they would use that in their commercials?

Your previous comments about the sound system were way off-base. The system was designed by Lexicon, not by Hyundai, so if there are more speakers than the competition then take that up with Lexicon. Your statement to the effect that the reason it has more speakers than the competition (Tech package only) was done just as part of some irrelevant speaker counting, rather than to improve the sound for all passengers in the vehicle, is patently absurd. I am sure you know that the only other car with a Lexicon branded sound system is Rolls Royce.

OK, so your father doesn't want you to get a Hyundai, we know that. Maybe he just wants to drive your Camaro occasionally since he already has a luxury sedan. I am not even sure how you can compare a Hyundai Genesis Sedan with a Camaro.

I think people are missing the fact that Hyundai doesn't expect to sell the Prestige to EVERYBODY...

ahhh...to be 18 again, how much fun that would be....especially if i had $48k in my pocket....

I don't want to sound cocky, but I would consider myself rich. My family has 5 cars, 2 lexus, 2 mercedes, and a Hummer H1. When I told my parents i wanted a Hyundai, they started laughing.

I think you made a right choice by going to something other than Hyundai genesis. Genesis never meant to draw any people from your group of people who can own multiple luxury. Some pseudo luxury owners (like myself) would consider Genesis but not people from the kind of your family.

German luxury cars are fine vehicle. The engine, handling, safety and world class engineering to put them together. They are well worth the money. If I can afford it, I would. In fact, I did have been driving BMW 5 series last 3 years. I am not really rich. I am a pseudo luxury owner. I leased it just to see what is all about german automobile. If the economy is a bit better and my financial situation is better, I would keep it. Instead, I have decide to switch to an average car like Honda Accord (which made me skewed to Genesis V6 sedan or coupe).

However, IMHO, Genesis can be a serious factor for Japanese car owners. For example, Genesis Sedan would definitely catch attention shoppers for Nissan Maxima or Toyota Avalon. And for me, I was planning to just simple Honda Accord Coupe but seriously considering genesis coupe. This is no brand consciousness decision. This is about fighting the current economy.

Now, do you think Japanese luxury is "true" luxury ? Do they have true performance and safety of German Luxury? I don't think so. Japanese engines are inferior to German and American engine. They have edge in reliability.

Do you think Japanese luxury cars are considered as "true" luxury by people all over the world ? Not necessarily. It is pretty much only in America. People in Europe, India, China, South America etc buy German when they buy luxury. Japanese luxury cars main market is North America. It's not really true luxury outside US.

Lexus and Acura actually "created" new market of kinda pseudo luxury. Not quite like Geramn performance but with luxury features and look.
(Well, Infinity is a different story. They did attempt to directly compete with German cars. They have not succeeded yet. Nissan's VQ engine is excellent but still not quite up to the level of German engines (not even American engine in terms of torque at low RPM and speed)).

Why do I bring this up ? If Hyundai ever bring Equus to US, they are not really competing with German Luxury. They know they can't beat German cars. They are attcking Japanese luxury. Hyundai is trying to beat Japanese Luxury with performance. Sorta like Infinity but the enemy is Lexus and Acura not BMW or Porsche (which Infinity is attacking).

Genesis sedan and coupe is a cut throat attack on japanese large cars and average coupes.
Equus will be very bold attack on Japanese luxury cars in US, in a nutshell, IMHO.

Just history repeating itself but with Hyundai now. People laughed at Toyota, then Toyota/Lexus, Honda, then Honda/Acura (maybe some are still laughing at this one).... and so now is Hyundai. People soon will not be laughing at Hyundai when they start to humiliate Toyota, Honda and others as they are now.

I think MonBlanc made a good point - that Hyundai is not necessarily trying to beat the Germans at their game - but the Japanese at theirs.. As far as Hyundai is concerned - if they want to beat the Japanese, they cannot compare their cars to them - they have to compare their cars above and beyond them - so they compare to the Germans. However, their real aim is to beat Lexus, Acura and Infiniti - and I think they can...

I think you have lost your marbles. The Lexus LS 460 is very competitive against German Luxury cars. Now I admit, it does not handle like a BMW sedan, but neither does a Mercedes sedan.

All the other stuff you claim is blatant snobbery, and trying to live off the fumes of German superiority over the Asian auto manufacturers during most of the previous century, even though that superiority no longer exists today. If you think German engines are so technologically sophisticated, where is their hybrid technology?

BTW, saying that German engines are superior to Lexus except that they are less reliable, is like saying the Mazda rotary engine is technologically superior to the piston engine. Yeah, except that it gets lousy fuel economy and has a tendency to destroy itself at the slightest mistreatment. For 99% of the population (especially real engineers), reliability is numero uno. This "so-called" Geman engineering superiority is most absurd claim I have every heard on any Internet forum in my entire life.

You are not a "pseudo luxury owner." You are jsut a social climber. But I got news for you bud, money can't buy class.

this really is a silly thread....

i wish that for once someone would de-badge a bunch of these cars and then take an intelligent, but not necessarily knowledgeable group of consumers and let them decide. i bet the only continent that would be easily identifiable would be the north american one.....

It did turn into a silly discussion and I never really got the answers I was looking for. I think I will lock this one up and try again.

In any event, the Lexus LS460 is a technological marvel. It is every bit as luxurious as a Mercedes S-Class and more so than a BMW 750i or anything else less a Bentley or Rolls Royce.
