In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. This weekend while returning home I had the check engine light come on and stay on in my 4.6 Genesis. As probably everyone know's this has got to be one if the most annoying idiot lights ever put in any car! I have had these lights come on in other vehicles. Sometimes they go off finally and sometimes they don't.

Many times they don't end up even meaning anything other than a sensor getting a brief reading that something is outside of the optimum operating condition for the emission control system so says my service dept.

I am wondering if our recent severe weather conditions of -20F to -30F degree's below zero contributed to the light coming on. I had that happen on another vehicle that I had once.

Of course as soon as I can get it in to the service department I will have it checked out. Just curious..................anyone else have their check engine light come on yet? Thanks!

If it is still on I would check that your gas cap is tight.

Well here is an update. I did check my gas cap before I took the car in this morning. The light was still on when I got there. I got the following information from the service department.

GDS diagnostcs. P0461 and P2066 stored for fuel level a and b performance. Checked bulletins-none found. Checked for calibration updates- none available. Called Hyundai-suggested checking terminal connectors MF21 and MF11-OK. Cause unknown. Possibly caused by topping off fuel tank frequently. Recommend not filling tank until it is at least below 3/4 tank.

Living in a very cold climate I usually keep my fuel tanks topped off in the winter to reduce the chance of moisture building on the inside of a fuel tank that is low and in extreme cold I use an additive as well.

I found out one thing that may go along with their diagnosis. After filling up (topping off) the miles to empty was less each time. This morning with a full tank of gas I was only going to be able to drive 310 miles.

When I told the service tech this he explained that those 2 sensors basically are saying what a minute you just got gas and your miles to empty is even less now and that does not compute thus the check engine warning light came on.

I don't know, from what I am told when you put gas in the car it needs a certain minumum amount of fuel to trip the sensors to re-set and re-calibrate the miles to empty feature.

Personally I figure you should be able to fill your gas tank when ever you want but I guess I need to change my habits with my 4.6 Genesis. Still......not a big deal if that's all it is.

I just thought I would share this in case anyone else runs into trouble with this.

Thanks for sharing Duaine, because honestly, I've never ran across that concern with any of my customers before & didn't even know that topping off your fuel tank prior to it dropping below a certain point would cause a check engine lamp to occur. Learn someting new everyday.;)

Duaine,

You say you live in a very cold climate, but you don't have it listed in the Location.
The cold climate can be anywhere. Canada? States that border Canada? Where?

I lived in Northern Maine many years ago, and we would often get those temperatures.
I have a friend in Bozeman Montana who get those temperatures.

Where?

Just an observation...

I am trading in an '04 Excursion with a 6.0L diesel once my V8 arrives. It holds approximately 46 gallons when topped off. I seem to recall quite the discussion on a diesel forum about the fuel system. One tidbit was that it took approximately 8 gallons removed for the computer to accurately calculate the DTE. Of course 8 gallons isn't all that much in relation to the tank capacity, and I'm not convinced it's relevant. Just wanted to throw it out there. :)

My check engine light came on Saturday. I went to a dealer (not purchasing one) who was ready to close (4:30PM) his Svc Dept. He also told me to reset the gas cap when the engine was cold. I did Sunday morning, and it still hasn't gone off. I read the thread, but I live in Florida (70-80), so i know cold temps aren't the issue. My last two tank fillups were mid-grade quality and almost complete fillups, not topoffs. Any suggestions, other than just going to the dealer tomorrow?-lol

Duaine; there is a simple cure for this situation: let your wife drive the Genesis. Everyone husband knows that married women drive the gas out of every car they enter, and then give the car to us to fill up! If you aren't married my wife will drive your Genesis for you, solving your problem!

Sorry, I live in Iowa.........haven't been able to check in lately. Oh and I'm not trying to say that the temps I mentioned aren't elsewhere. I'm just saying sometimes with very harsh conditions that you can get things going on that otherwise normally wouldn't happen.

Happened to me 2X these past three weeks. 1st time: they replaced O2 sensor and it stayed off for 2 days! Hyundai mechanic just called and stated the Genesis manual "had error, citing wrong O2 sensor position description in manual--TSB to be sent by HMA".

Taking it in tomorrow for new sensor in "correct position". I'll advise on this latest "fix". :p

Black 4.6/blk/saddle/wings on trunklid, blackened "H" on steering wheel.

Yes they cleared the code and I let the fuel drop to at least 3/4 tank and have not had the light come on again.

Well that's a plus then. I'd be pissed to be riding around for a few days with my check engine light on in my brand new car
