I was the proud owner of a new 2.0T...it lasted about two weeks when the car starting revolting. First, the hood. I should have noticed it the night I bought it but was in a hurry to get home after waiting two hours to sign the paperwork. BUT, I did notice it and brought to the attention of the dealership. I also started do some research online about this issue. It seems, it is not just me. A lot of folks are seeing the same problem...what is the problem you ask:

Take a look at this photo..(not mine). Look at the drivers side near the headlight. Now, look at the other head light. You will see a larger gap on the drivers side. EVERY Coupe I have seen has this large gap. On mine, it allows the hood to bounce up and down while drive. More than once, I have had to pull over to make sure the hood was latched. My concern, beyond it being an appearance issues is this, if the hood does not fit properly, it may not latch properly. My car has been in the shop 7 times for this and Hyundai has not been able to resolve the issue and has gone as far as to say it is normal.

I ask that if your car has this issue, please say so to your service folks. Also, drop me a line at GCoupehood@gmail.com. I want Hyundai to fix this issue for all of us, not just me. I think it takes away from the beautiful lines of the car and may be a potential safety issue. I am not an engineer and may be off my rocker here. I fly jets for a living and if I saw misaligned panel on an airplane, I would not take it. If a passenger saw it, I would get the airplane on the ground as soon as I could. Things that are supposed to fit right..should.

This needs to be a group effort. Look at your hood and report back. If you have already done so on other forums, do not repost that you have the same issue. I want to make sure the numbers are right.

I guess it is not. The list of people who have attempted the fix.

1.) Everyday service dude.
2.) Body Shop
3.) District Service and Parts Manager
4.) Hyundai engineer.

Results....still bouncing and still misaligned.

They have only attempted to adjust it using the bumpers on the hood. Where the hood attaches to the body has not been touched.

My 2.0T does not have this issue. I have never seen the hood bounce while driving. It could be due to the fact that the car has one off center hydraulic arm under the hood that keeps it open when you have the hood up. I could see this being an issue if it is not latching correctly as you say. Have you asked any of these mechanics about looking at the latch?

My 3.8 Track has the same gap in the hood. Although I have not noticed any bouncing of the hood.

I do not have this issue, and I have a 3.8. Perhaps it's a matter of where the car is manufactured or bought?

My 3.8 coupe has a larger gap on the passenger side than than the driver side. I have not noticed any bouncing of the hood. The slight difference in the gap doesn't really bother me.

no problem here, yes gap is a bit different. Hood stays shut even on dirt roads or high speed (it better!)

I think the bounce was made worse by the multiple attempts to adjust the hood.

RZ..I agree that rod has something to do with it as well. Right, now, I am not willing to take the rod off and make any additonal corrections to my hood. I have been advised against it until this has reached some resolution.

If you do not see a gap anywhere on the hood, you are dang lucky. EVERY Coupe I have seen has the gap....even the ones in their commercial and advertisements.

If your dealer DOES address the issue and it works, have them pass along what they did..for our benefit.

i saw a gap too and the dealer adjusted it with those hood bumpers. the gap was on the drivers side. they adjusted it to look pretty good now. however, i think that there shoud be a hood prop rod on both sides for more stability. maybe they thought the hood was too small for two props. also, be sure and grab the hood by the middle when raising it. that way there is no chance of warping it.

I realize this is an old thread but still wanted to let you guys know. On another genesis coupe forum there is a thread where people are posting information about their hood alignment issues. I can't post links as I am a junior member, however if you google Genesis Coupe Hood Alignmen, it should be the first link that appears.

Please for the sake of all genesis coupe owners if you're experiencing this issue
find the thread and post the following information on it:

To what degree is the hood out of alignment? -
What have you done to try to get it fixed? -

I too in my OCD anal microscoping of the car once home noticed this glaring body panel feauxpaw annoyance. I'm glad I got on here today and saw this thread because I thought something may have happened during transit that they tried to smooth over before sticking it out on the lot. Anyway.......I made the big bumper on the passenger side higher where you can see 4 slots in the side of it when the hood is open and left the small one on the outside edge alone since that was level. Then set the big one on driver side lower where only 3 of the slots in the side of it were visible and on driver side adjusted the outer smaller one a bit higher until that edge of the hood was level with fender. This is where the most even gap is all the way accross and it tightened up the hood when closed in the latch eliminating any hood flop on the hwy. It is not perfect and would prefer both sides to sit flush like the passenger side did before adjusting but oh well. My final evaluation of the situation is that there is small amount of arch on the driver side front hood line where it passes over the headlight that doesn't exist on the passenger side. The passenger side seems flatter where the same part of the driver side has more of an arch. I see this as body panel imperfection from the factory, maybe just a good stretch of them since everyone doesn't have it based on posts here. I have mine as even as it can be and tight where hood doesn't flop. If others still have loose hood after evening out the bumpers then I'd suggest loosening the hoodlatch bolts and pushing down on the latch while retightening to lower the hood latch to pull hood tighter when closed. That's about all I got on this. Not gonna waste time on having the dealer come back with some lame normal nothing we can do about it bullshit. Short of replacing the hood with one without an arch or making their body shop flatten that portion of the front of the hood there is just nothing except more of my time and money that'll make any difference. I did get mine to an acceptable status to not involve the stealership in it but yes, the issue to begin with and the smoke up your ass the dealership wants to blow both suck but is about par and all you can expect nowadays.

edit - also had the trunk on passenger side misalignment too. Wrestled it into fitting a bit better but still not as good as driver side.

My 2010 3.8 coup also has a larger gap on drivers side. I've notices this a while back and initially thought someone bumped into me. No looseness / vibrations have been noticed. I agree it has to do with the hood strut. Probably since it attaches to the hood on that side.

Please keep us posted.

The gap on mine is even bigger and although I don't have a hood bounce problem it still annoys the hell outta me. Guess I'll take it to the dealer to see what they can do. You're right, maybe if enough people complain Hyundai will come up with a fix.

It is the hydraulic hood lift arm. Pop it off and your hood is aligned properly. Hyundai is aware.

The hood, front fascia, and front fenders should be aligned together. Move one and another may need adjustment. A near perfect alignment of body panels can be done by a good body man with patience. I have restored several cars and am very anal about body panel gaps and alignment and I know it can take a lot of time to get it right.

Re: Coupe Hood alignment -unlatches

Bought a 2010 genesis a couple of months ago. My problem is not just a misalligned hood, it actually unlatches when driving at high speeds or when hitting bumps. The safety latch is the only thing that keeps it from opening. Took it to dealership, Future Hyundai of Concord (CA) three times, the first they just said that there was nothing wrong since they could not reproduce the problem, the second they adjusted the headlight to allign the hood, the third they tightened the latch so the hood does not vibrate..but it happened again. I took pictures and showed it to them. I'm taking my car to another dealership today and hope they can fix this. I used to own Tiburons, bought 3 of them since 1996 and they were great cars and I never had any major problems. When they were discontinued, I bought the Genesis. I actually liked the way it handled better and originally thought it was an upgrade until this happened. Has anyone else had this problem? Read alot about misalligned hoods from other threads but none were the hood actually unlatches.

It sounds like that dealers service staff are incompetent. You did the right thing by taking it somewhere else. Its not at all uncommon to find incompetent hyundai dealer service departments. Some are lazy and don't want to do their job, like Southwest Hyundai Albuquerque. I once brought my 2010 gen coupe in for an oil change only to find out later that they didn't change the oil, and lied to me about it.

Just wanted to let you know that I also have a 2010 genesis coupe and my hood does NOT pop open how you've described. I've gone over bumps but have only taken it up to 110mph or so. There is a slight hood misalignment on mine but its not that noticeable and I can live with it. All the fixes for alignment problem don't seem good... like removing the lift support.

I don't know how you close your hood... if your one of those guys that let's it free fall and slam shut. I don't do that. I lower the hood down slowly and then lift the release and make sure its not blocking the catch bar, then I press down on the front/top of the hood with my palm. You can use a cotton cloth if you're worried about hand prints on your paint. It'll click shut.
