If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Cruising Mileage 5.0 (and 3.8)

That's good to hear. I bought this as a work car/commuter instead of a R-spec because I thought the stiffer ride felt a little out of place in a car like this, there were no more 2012 5.0's to be found at dealers I would give the time of day to, and I already have something even faster. Mileage (so far) aside, I'm impressed.

Yea, I agree. If/when my wife wants one for a third car to drive, V6 it will be. Plenty fast, especially with the bump im HP they claim is coming. With that said, I also looked for and found a good deal on the rare 5.0 non R-spec. Fast at the R, but a softer ride and luxury look. Does not go around the corners like a R... Has the same stuff except for the tires. And maybe some firmer brushings in the R?

NOTHING like a Ford twin cam V8 sound. Either idles smooth as silk, quiet yet rocket fast acceleration. Yes, I meant to say that. Because the Hyundai did copy the modular Ford design. Mercedes did so much in their V6 and V8s they had to license some of the Ford tech. Ford made a commercial many years ago showing German guys riding in golf carts in the Ford US engine plant. Anyway, love the engine and tranny combo.

Oh, on the delayed throttle response. If you try it, you can do a quick "jam" of the throttle very fast. Then let off just as fast. The car will not respond. It is like they out that delay in when you hit it quick to the floor just in case it was a mistake. Like a anti- unintended acceleration program in the digital throttle control.

Then try it where you go under half throttle and stop. Do it quick. The car responds instant in mine. Then I punch it and the push back is immediate. The V6 I had from Hertz did the same thing. And the tranny responds instant to the right gear. Let me know if you guys find the same results. Just for fun.

I have a 2013/ 3.8 . I drive from Evansville IN to south of Nashville and to Indy and when I put it in ECO I get 28 on the low and 31.7 on the upper end per the gauges. Manually when I figure it is about 1 mpg lower. I use regular.
Equal or better than the 28 EPA est.

On a side note, even in ECO mode I recently passed a loooong semi on a two lane hwy and I passed it in a serious fashion and the growl sounded pretty good too.

I have owned a 1966 chevy 396 and a 303 chevy recently and it is faster than either when passing. The 396 might have been quicker from the line.

Mike... I travel those routes all the time. The hills did hurt the V6 I had in the way to Nashville. And you are getting hit a bit with the lights on US41 going to Indy? Or are you doing the new I69 patch? I think you ought to run about 3-5 tanks of 93 Shell or BP, pump up those tires, use the 5-20 oil, keep the Gumout complete going every 1k miles, and you should come up in mileage.

I need to hit Nashville with the 5.0 from Indy or Evansville. And see what mileage it gets.

Yea, the V6 is amazing with passing power. I believe what you say plus the 8 speeds help. Yours a 396/375 solid lifter?

When I have a car load, the 5.0 still pushes back in the seat fierce. And those in it for the first time are shocked at the push into the seat and the quiet acceleration and lack of noise. Then they loom over at the speedo and normally yelp. Because it is such a shock value in a different way than loud.

I get about 12 miles per gallon in the city. Lead foot I guess.... :)

Chuckle. And you are one of those that gets 12k on a set of gum ball tires? :) good for you. Glad to see someone in a constant romp.

I got 31.5 mpg on the way home from picking up my car in St. Louis about 10 days ago. 575 miles at about 70-75 using SCC much of the way. I was very pleased with that, especially considering there might be some minor improvement once she gets broken in. 35 mpg in a 5.0 blows my mind....

I will keep getting better. And try some of the tips and figure out some new tips to tell us about. I bet you will get several more MPG as time goes on.

I did my 255 mile trip today, and I definitely cannot hang in that league with my 3.8. I drove relatively conservatively-- I set the adaptive cruise at 5 MPH over the posted speed limit, and only deviated from that when traffic dictated. I avoided any hard acceleration and generally went with the flow. Traffic was light and steady, so conditions were excellent. The trip began with a fill-up of Marathon Premium gas and a tire pressure set at 35 PSI measured with an AccuTire gauge. The outside temperature was mid- to high-80s.

Less than 2 miles of this trip were non-interstate. The posted speed limits were 65 MPH to 70 MPH most of the way. Statesville is about 750 feet above sea level, and home is about 1,000 feet, so the net climb was about 250 feet. The drive was relatively flat by typical interstate standards (it was not Kansas or Florida, but there were no significant changes through hills or mountains).

The car is a 3.8 2012 with about 13,000 miles. The tires are the Michelin Energy Saver factory tires. It was warm out, so I drove with A/C the whole way.

The screen showed 255.4 miles for the trip with 68 MPH average speed and 33.7 MPG. The total trip time was 3:44. The hilarious estimate was total tank range: if I add the trip distance to the distance to empty, I get 625 miles. What a fantasy.

My actual calculated mileage was 29.1 MPG, based on 8.764 gallons at the end fill-up. So, the error was 15.8%, which is consistent with my previous measurements. I am very pleased with 29.1 MPG; I just wish the instrument cluster was accurate.

Here are the screen shots from my dash...

The V6 also was optimistic on the reading at times. Remember that the average reading is NOT for the whole tank. Instead it is for a time period or miles of some sort. I am thinking about 150 miles or so on highway, maybe less in town. So, I would get readings that were close to accurate, and then at times it read low (when I ended a trip with a bunch of hills and stop and go) where the tank average was better.

So far the 5.0 readings are closer to dead on for the snap shot they use in the average. It can read real low average compared to the tank, if I travel to a city, then are aggressive driving in town and hit stop lights or idle while doing email. Those times the tanks refill mileage has been higher than the reading. My experience at least.

I do not expect that 35+ snap shot of 130 miles all the time. I think the V8 is getting about 1mpg less or the same on the highway as the V6. In town, even with a light foot the V8 does not come close from my experience with both cars.

Great mileage and a thorough write up.

We thank you. I think we have some of the best guys in this forum. I learn something every day from someone. And most of us seem to want to help each other out. Not get into tinkle around the tree flaming.

Oh, side note. May put it in its own post... A ton of folks like the Penzoil ultimate. And one post said Walmart was not carrying it anymore. I found the same thing. They are charging higher price now for the Platinum version. On a clearance table here is what I found. Rustled up 8 of their last quarts. I have been a M1 fan for decades. The extended drain since it came out. Good advice to use the Ultimate since it wi have less blow by going through the PCV, which is hell on the intake valves deposits. With no gas to keep them clean. Expensive

Yea, your source is expensive. Right at $8 a quart, pulse shipping. Walmart had these on a clearance table for $5. Wish I could have got a few cases at that price.
Someone on an oil forum said he was at Walmart and the Pennzoil Ultra 5-quart jugs and 1-quart bottles were on the clearance shelf, but no price on them. The store clerk could not find the price, so he got a manager. Manager said he was tired of looking at them and offered them at $3.00 per 5-quart jug and $.50 per quart bottle, and asked the customer how many he wanted. Customer says he will take all of it (I think it was something like 15 5-quart jugs and some more 1-quart bottles).

Wow. Lucky him.

You can use the wal-mart item tracker and locate which stores in your area/state have 5-quart jugs and quarts in stock (and on clearance). I actually did this and had friends in surrounding cities in the state go pick up my order (site to store - fill out additional recipient area w/ friend's name). I was able to attain 36 qts of 5w30 which should take care of about 5 oil changes in the r-spec.

Normal clearance price on the 5-qt jugs of Ultra is $21.00 (cheaper than the Pennzoil Platinum 5qt)

Ill be honest, this is the first time in 5+ yrs I've had anything to do with wally world-- but this is superb oil at a great price (but that deal Mark_888 pointed out wd be the jackpot!). I'd rather seek it out, hoard some and not have to try and wait for deals on M1 EP.

btw, DRS...there's some over in the Avon store (individual qts) and also some up in one of the Lafayette store (bother 5qt and 1qts) -- at clearance prices. You can find it elsewhere (Franklin, Greenwood), but not on sale.
