  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a question about the DRL's on the new R Spec.

1. No matter which position the light switch is in, you cannot turn of the DRL's off. Even with the switch in the OFF position. Is there something I'm missing? Or is it not doable?

2. Has anyone looked at rewiring the DRL's so that the LED accent light is the DRL's instead of the bulb that is currently the DRL? I think it would look a lot better to have the accent light be the DRL. I'm not sure why Hyundai did not do this. They put in the nice accent light so why not use it as the DRL instead of the other light?

That behaviour is by design, you are not missing anything - it's the way it's supposed to work. In Canada we've had mandatory DRL's since 1990.
They will only go off if the parking brake is on, at least on pre-2012 Canadian versions.
I agree that the LED accent light on 2012's would look nice as a DRL, but perhaps it was deemed not bright enough? I can't say as I have yet to see a 2012 on the road.

As Gurkha says we've had mandatory DRL's in Canada for years and I have no problems with them but I do have a problem with Hyundai's implementation of the LED strips on the Genesis as nothing more than "Bling".

Most of the new "luxury" models coming out now have LED DRL's and they work great for that purpose. I was actually looking forward to seeing the solid looking strip on the Genesis instead of the individual LED's on all the other makes. Instead they don't even turn on during the day, we just get the same old DRL's that make the car as distinctive as a Hyundai Accent. I saw the first 2012 Genny coming in the opposite direction the other day and the only way I could confirm that it was a 2012 model was by seeing the tailight configuration when it was past me and I saw them in the rearview mirror.

My guess is that the LED's don't actually contribute to lighting up the road in a significant way so what actual function do they serve? It seems to me that Hyundai just jumped on the "me too" wagon and added the LED strips without even figuring out why they were there on the competitor's models. As far as I'm concerned, if something doesn't serve a useful purpose, leave it on the shelf. We don't need things on the car that are only there to add costs and potentially fail.

Just my opinion and for those of you who have them on your car please correct me if I'm wrong about their usefulness.

I don't know if they are completely mandatory here or not but just about every car since the '90's has them.

However, on my '04 Chevy truck and my '08 Pontiac G8, I can turn them off if I so desire with the light switch.

DRLs cannot be rewired (easily) on any 2012 Genesis. Their operation appears to be integrated into the car's computer and are fused in general with the high beam operation IIRC.

I believe Hyundai did this so that they could manage what I call the daytime "cyclops" behavior: When you use a turn signal, the light on the side of the turn signal goes out until the turn signal is canceled, and then the light comes back on.

+1
They should have used that LED strip as Audi or Mercedes does: as actual DRL's!
As it is now, it's nothing more than a fashion statement.
