Disappearing Genesis Dealerships

I just called them, and made an appointment for service, but honestly, I have no idea is the appointment actually was made. I think the phone number I called just went to the hyundai division of that dealer. Every time I've dealt with this dealer in the past, it's been a nightmare.

Also, if you go to the official genesis website, and then you go to "find a dealer" and then enter an Albuquerque zipcode, it shows the nearest in either Colorado or Arizona.
It sounds like things are Breaking Bad in Albuquerque.

New user here. I have a G70 3.3T and the nearest Genesis dealers are 40 minutes and 1 hour. I knew that going in, but I stopped by the local Kia / Hyundai dealer for a 40k mile oil change and they refused to service the car. This was not a repair or anything warranty related. Just routine service. They said they couldn't service any Genesis newer than 2018 as they wouldn't have the parts or tech info. I explained my G70 was simply a Stinger without the hatch, but they were not persuade. I now have an oil change scheduled at a genesis dealer, but it will be ~3 hours to do this.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'd rather not go to 3rd party oil change shops, but that is another option.

Yes, it’s sad that Genesis found a better way to make current owners happy.

That's weird.

Many Lexus owners do basic service at Toyota dealerships and some Lexus shops will even do basic maintenance on other makes (BMW, etc.).

I own a 2022 GV70. I called to schedule my next pre-paid maintenance and and to service a recall item. I was informed that Genesis has pulled the dealership from my location (Holland, MI). The valet pick-up service has been dropped and a service visit was going to be 3 months out. I was informed that Genesis is consolidating to 100 dealerships nationwide. This is driven by the brand's desire to build on a premium image and distance itself from Hyundai. I was told that local Hyundai dealers cannot service my vehicle or honor my pre-paid service and warranty contract. I was told I now need to work with the next closest dealer 90 minutes away. I was told by that dealer that an appointment is a month plus lead-time due to short staffing. After purchasing the GV70, I was so impressed with the product and the service that I also purchased a 2023 Hyundai Palisade believing that I was staying in the family and simplifying my service and maintenance under 1 dealer. In any case, I have gone from being a brand ambassador for Genesis and Hyundai to now feeling like I've been swindled by a brand that has alienated a customer base with no warning or mitigation. I learned about the dealership change by the dealer, however, neither Genesis customer care, the next closest dealership, nor any of the nearby Hyundai dealers were aware of the brand pulling out of my area. No planning for their existing customers. Genesis needs to do the right thing and allow Hyundai dealerships to honor genesis maintenance and warranty contracts.

If you go back to about 2016, Genesis planned to have 100 dealers in the US. The Hyundai dealers sued and wond there case. Since then, they have started implementing the original plan. Some will continue by opening stand alone stores, others dropped.

One of the big complains here for a long time is havings service done by Hyundai dealers, as you suggest. Seem like either way, they are pissing off a lot of customers. There shuould be some intermediate compromise to keep the local customer happy where he bought.

The sketchy dealership sales and service setup has prevented me from seriously considering a Genesis in my current new car search. Maybe on the next one things will have stabilized and it will be back on my list. I guess there is at least one standalone dealership being built in the Chicago area but it's about a 1-hour drive for me and I'd want something more convenient for a luxury car purchase.

Back before the dealer lawsuits I don't think the Chicago market was very high on the priority list for standalone stores so progress around here might be slower than in other areas.

Is it better they celebrate having 300 crappy dealers? As a Genesis owner, would you rather drive 5 miles to a crappy dealer or 40 miles to an excellent one?

Not enough cars and sales to support 300 good ones.

I was just about to buy 21 used g80 as I love my 2012 which I get all work done at

I was just about to buy a used 2021 g80 as I love my 2012 I’ve had for 10 years and get all work done at the local Hyundai but called them and as they know me said I could get oil and filters etc done there but nothing else. Closest genesis dealer 95 miles away. So sadly calling to cancel the deal this morning.
Any idea what to buy?.

Let this be a lesson to every prospective buyer who sees a used Genesis on a used car lot. No Genesis dealer nearby? Run, don’t walk away. It didn’t have to be this way.

You've made the right call based on the current state of the GMA dealer network.

If you want a reliable RWD sedan and can do with something smaller than a G80, the '21 and newer Lexus IS350 is worth a test drive. (not the AWD version).

Although the naturally aspirated V6 lacks the quick acceleration of turbo engines, it's smooth and very dependable. Lexus dealers typically top the survey lists for customer service and since the same V6 is used in many Toyota models, a Toyota dealer can take care of non-warranty service.

Best of luck.

How sad this thread is . We have discussed these same issues in several threads over a year or more. And it is getting worse it seems. Has anyone considered what this is doing to the value of a used Genesis ? The severe reduction in dealerships seems to be continuing and the rebuilding process (Stand-Alone) obviously will take many years. Why would anyone with the money to build a new dealership choose Genesis if they read this Forum ? Upside - there will be some huge depreciation on nice, used Genesis. So buy used ,not new? Remember the Hyundai Equus ?The Kia Amanti ?

I sure hope this talk of only 100 dealerships for the US is not accurate. Only a fool would believe that's enough dealers to even remotely cover a country this size. For comparison google suggests there are 244 Lexus dealers in the USA. 342 Jaguar dealers. 366 BMW dealers. 384 Mercedes dealers.

The original plan back about 2016 was 100. May have changed.
There is a problem though. In the US, under our franchise laws, the dealers are independent businesses. Look at present sales of Genesis and then convince an investor to open a dealership in Montana. Put a Genesis dealer next to each of the Lexus dealers. Could they make it? Maybe in the future, not now.

Perhaps not all should be taken away from Hyundai dealers yet. Easy for us to speculate but they are the bankers on this stuff.

I was with Jaguar when they began their (first?)death spiral . Management thought the problem would be solved by the same plan Genesis has - eliminate weak dealers. The Dealers thought they were not the problem - product quality was. Neither parties at high level ever seemed to talk to owners, mechanics, salespeople . Genesis seems to be following the same path .Let's hope they read this Forum and make fixes required to support the brand. Unlike Jaguar they have the resources. The JLR lesson was to group all family brands in one dealer, stay close to those who made, used, sold and repaired the product -not those who just fiddled with the money at Corporate. This Forum would be an easy way for Hyundai Corporate to stay informed -since Genesis aren't?

After neatly 8 years since GMA launched, holding one’s breath for them to drastically improve the dealership experience soon would be unwise. But there are those PGA sponsorships and Genesis House. 😆😆😳

Does anyone know the Best dealership to service a GV70 in the Houston area? I purchased mine from Plano.

I do wonder if that’s the plan in the Jacksonville area-consolidating to 1-2. For example, one of the Hyundai dealers is now building a standalone Genesis dealership. It’s not the closest to me, but not much further. My dealer has been, just okay. Not bad but the main thing keeping me coming back is location, honestly.

I do think there’s a middle ground though. If I’ve been going to a dealer for service, let me continue to go there, especially if there’s not a Genesis dealer within 50 (or so) miles of me. Otherwise you’ll piss off people that invested in the brand.

The IS is way tighter than the G80 when it comes to rear passengers space.

If there is a close enough BMW shop, just get a CPO 3er.

Problem for Jag was going down-market (trying to compete against the 3er with subpar entries) and overly focusing on performance.

With the cost of developing its own lightweight chassis and powerplants, Jag had to scrimp on interior appointment (Cadillac made the same mistake).

Genesis has done the opposite - not overly focusing on performance and actually upping the ante when it comes to interiors.

Jaguar already didn't have the sales volume to support the dealer network it had; if they hadn't been partnered up with Land Rover, many of those Jag dealerships would have gone under.

And now with Jaguar going back to being more upscale and lower volume, JLR wants a # of dealerships to give up their Jag franchise, which hasn't gone over well since JLR dealerships were pressured into building new stores which housed both brands.

So after spending millions (upon listening to all the corporate speak about how Jaguar was going to take off), these dealerships are taking a huge loss.

That's exactly why the growth in standalone Genesis stores is taking as long as it is.

1) only selling low volume sedans

2) original 100 dealership network gets tossed due to lawsuits, so around 350 Genesis franchises to start

3) even with the additions of the GV70 and GV80 to the lineup, not nearly enough supply/inventory to be able to support 350 (now fewer) newly built standalone stores.

Same thing happened to us, we are in the 2nd largest city in the state of Indiana and there are no dealerships now within a four hour round trip. No help from Genesis at all.
