  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Install complete. More deatiled vids to come. Here is Rspec burnout with valves open. Could of smoked em across whole parking lot...but lifted for safety. Shop ran very late finishing up today and the Oklahoma wind is crazy today. Still blowing at 10pm tonight trying to update with better vids. Can't get a clean video without microphone distortion from the wind. Will post some up this weekend. Do you like the burnout vid?

Open and closed comparison vids coming soon. Best I could do for today. Wife at home calling and calling and calling.

Did you see the burnout video above? **EDIT**Added two more vids above (Thursday). I promise, good vids coming when the winds calm down and I have help making some good videos worth posting.

As for my thoughts: Well, absolutely BAD A_ _ to the bone! It's the best V8 sound I have heard this side of a race car. You won't believe the looks I get when I crack exhaust open.

Here is the center section of exhaust we took off.

New Dyno with cut outs verse old dyno stock exhaust

New dyno with new exhaust "OPEN" verses old dyno with stock exhaust. We had 10% higher humidity and a 20 degree hotter day....and still posted better results.

What a difference 30 years makes. I remember manual exhaust cutouts were all the rage in the '50's, but I couldn't afford a car, let alone an accessory. I did put a steering wheel spinner and fuzzy dice in my dad's 1946 Willys Jeep, though.

Decent HP and Torque gains. For the dyno runs were you using premium or regular gas?

Noob here... I registered a few days ago on this forum after the Rspec caught my eye. I never really considered a sedan until this car. Bang for your buck is unmatched, IMO. The last sedan I owned was my 2nd car, a '84 Accord.

Currently, I have a weekend car (twin-turbocharged 350z) and my daily, a Infiniti FX35. Eventually I will sell the Z and who knows about the FX.

Driv200: Great thread and props for being a pioneer in the mod dept for this vehicle.

Justin

Thanks JCT. That kind of compliment goes a long way. I'm not normally the pioneer. Nor am I the pic post king. But, without a 3rd Car for a wknd toy, I'm just trying to tastefully mod my Rspec with efficient upgrades without going past the "daily ride" threshold.

So far, just the basics with a trick exhaust has proven great gains and tons of fun. I may have to post some fun vids of people's faces when they see and hear an Rspec transform from mild to wild. Even race guys are wide eyed and giving thumbs up.

Sure would like to see your twin turbo 350Z!

I remember clawing under my car to take off the caps on the exhaust cutouts. I also remember the tickets for loud pipe because you couldn’t restore the exhaust without clawing back under the car to screw the caps back on.
Looked cool at night though, with the flames coming out of the cutouts when you nailed it, uh. :D :D

I remember those, but I also seem to recall a cable-operated setup as well - pull to open/push to close. Somehow the whole idea doesn't seem as attractive 30 years later. I love the Genesis, and I'm not a Buick/Lexus candidate, but exhaust mods and the like don't interest me any more... (Alas, lots of things don't interest me any more - sigh).

This is so darn cool you got the 20 year old in me considering this. :D

Help me understand this clearly. There are no mods required to the stock system. you simply need to disconnect the pipe/resonator section which you show here.

The kit you purchased was the crossover, switch and electric butterfly valves which are installed by adding additional custom pipe to the front and back to connect up to the stock brackets?

If I wanted to remove this I simply remove the entire new cutout assembly and reinsert my original stock assembly?

Reason for removal is we have salt and crap on our roads during winter so the valves and motors would not last through one of them. Also if for what ever reason I do get pulled over I would need to put her back to stock. ;)

Can you provide me with a link to the kit you bought?

Hey guys! This is exactly what this is......a modern version of what we did in our 20's. The electric switch makes it so simple and a lot more fun. Stealth quiet operation with the wife and at work.......and Youthful Race Ready performance while still holding your coffee. It's great.

Dg_moore - I challenge you to jump in my car and hit the switch. I almost guarantee you will find renewed interest in great sounding cars!!:D

My center pic un-install is as easy as it looks. Correct, you just unbolt center section. You will have two big silver cats at the top of yours where you see the two black pipes on mine. Don't worry, you got two more cats you cant get to that have your o2 sensor etc. So no check engine lights. Look at my Dyno thread. Pics on first post. http://genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/showthread.php?t=8919&highlight=Rspec+dyno

To return to stock, just rebolt it back on. No fuss. The hard part is getting the x-pipe (sold separately) and welding in the exhaust valves. Any exhaust shop probably already has the x-pipe and can probably do it.

Thanks for the feedback. One more question though, what size are these and where do you find the X pipes? Hmmm, guess that was 2 questions. :D

All good questions.

I went with the 2.5" size exhaust valves. Since we used 3" piping to replace everything, you could get the larger 3" exhaust valves probably. However, you want some back pressure to remain so the 2.5" valves are a safe bet.

Abel Racing has a vendor who supplies their x-pipes. Magnaflow also makes them, but they won't have any details about fitting the Genesis. I suggest you call Andre at Abel Racing and ask him to send you an x-pipe. His cell: 405-229-6377. When you reach him, make sure you confirm purchase b/c he also turns the wrenches and gets busy and is hard to reach sometimes.

Considering the target demographic of this trim model (let alone the Genesis Sedan as a whole), I'd consider you pretty much a pioneer. I'm past the age of the "tuner" crowd, but I will never grow out of the sound and visceral experience that comes along with a V8. In this particular case, we're in the same boat.

I'll PM you some pics of the Z...don't wanna hijack this thread.

Things do change - my wife drives a G35 coupe and she loves it (she's only 3 years younger than I), and I would have loved that car in my 20's and 30's, but now I can't stand to ride in it. She has had it for 6 years and I have never once driven it, even to pull it out of the garage. It's rough riding, very noisy, uncomfortable, and extremely difficult for me to get in and out of due to leg problems. 35 years ago, in my sports car/muscle car days (MGs, Triumph, Pontiac GTO, etc.) I never would have thought I'd be where I am today, but here I am (pretty much where everybody winds up eventually). Getting old stinks - I don't recommend it. However, the alternative ain't so great either.
