If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Electronics in car a joke ... Mute,freeze,etc...give up !!!

Some folks posted their A/V systems failed to work properly after the car was parked in the sun a while - especially if the passenger side was facing the sun. That is evidence in support of the heat theory.

Others though have had unresponsive A/V systems first thing in the morning, even when the car was parked in a garage for the night. Heat should not have been a factor there. Those A/V systems worked fine after being shut off 20+ minutes in the sun.

My car has (yet) to do the total A/V unresponsive thing though XM once in a while goes stupid - as if my subscription was canceled while I was listening. I suddenly can't tune any channel not in the preset/memories - it just tunes to channel 0. The various text lines on the Nav display disappear when this happens, then recover a moment later. This seems to happen 10 to 20 minutes after starting the car; both in mornings on the way to work after being parked in the garage all night and after sitting in the sun all day at work. It did it for a few weeks in a row, pretty much every time I drove the car (I have multiple cars so the Genesis doesn't see daily use). Lately though it hasn't happened... and I remember it happening a while ago, maybe a year ago. The XM provider doing something funky on a yearly basis? Dunno.

For most folks with Tech package A/V systems "going stupid" the fix seems to be a NEW (not remanufactured) amp unit since that also has the XM receiver. And not letting XM expire... certain problems seem to be more prevalent for folks that don't have XM subscriptions. (slow A/V start-ups, voice recognition locking up the system, etc)

Heat can and does cause electronic systems to not work properly... and it can cause "accumulated" damage to certain electronic components too. Such damage though would tend to be steadily increasing (electronic parts generally don't "heal" on their own) making the A/V system more and more flaky. Yet most A/V start-up failures seem totally random - it may go for weeks or months without a problem and then one day it just won't wake up properly... 20 minutes later it's fine again and may go a while without problems.

The symptoms I've seen on this forum are more like a PC that has problems booting once in a while - for no apparent reason, some PCs just don't start once in a while. Cycle the power switch and it boots normally on the second try. The Tech A/V system doesn't shut off immediately - it goes to a "standby" mode for about 20 minutes in case you're just running into 7-11 or whatever, that way it can re-start quickly. After 20 minutes of standby it fully shuts off. So it takes 20+ minutes to "cycle the power switch" on Tech A/V systems. Typical asynchronous software hiccups... kinda like when you split a big job between several folks "I'll do this piece, Joe you do that one, Fred you do something else, Hank when you get your piece done give it to Joe 'cause he'll need it for part of his piece; when we're all done we'll meet here with the results." If anybody has a problem with their piece of the job, the whole gang fails.

I may have to disagree with the heat theory.

The very first time it happened to me was on day 2 of ownership, it was at night and raining, and I started up the car and the radio didn't come on. It was not hot outside.

Another time I remember backing out of the garage first thing in the AM and it wouldn't work.

Many times it happened at start-up. I even remember the car being at the dealership to fix the problem and they said come get the car. I drove to get it, and when they went to get it out of the service bay, it didn't work.

(FYI-I have been treated well by Hyundai in regards to this issue and continued to purchase fron them)

I suspect that people are experiencing different problems - software bugs, heat-related electronics failures, others - that manifest in ways that appear alike. This is similar to how some symptoms, such as shortness of breath, may be caused by disparate disease processes. How much effort, if any, Hyundai is putting into investigating AV problems is known only to them.

Personally, I've only had the AV system fail on startup on a couple of occasions, both when the car had been parked for the day and the ambient temperature was low. Each time, shutting down and restarting did the trick.

I haven't had any GPS failures, although I did have an odd situation last week where the system wouldn't accept an address manually, but did take it by voice command.

I would like to set the record straight. First I don't hate the car just the electronics ... the car is fun to drive, fast, comfty,& gets great looks from people that don't know what it is.But I have no clue to what is wrong with the av/system that's not my job! my job is to pay to drive it.It could be heat or system memory buildup or something else. All I know is that coming home from the Jets game on sunday I wanted to use the am radio for the post game show and it worked for about 10 mins & next thing I knew again no sound !!! So I used my battery radio & drove home. In the Lincoln tunnel I put on the ipod it worked not quick but it came on ..you have to wait a long time for it to change pages when looking up a new song. I came out of the tunnel & the am worked ...crazy but with my car it's hit or miss & that's not fun or what I would call enjoying my car .That's right I'm not taking it the dealer today ... why it's just a waist of time & today I won't need am radio so maybe my xm will work , & if not I make sure to keep extra batteries in the car. Also I did not buy a second car they made me a offer for $7000.00 to trade up to a new car ... called me and said I was getting a special deal ha,ha,ha I said no thanks because I really don't think they are doing anything about the audio system .. I think it needs a whole new type of electronics. but again not my job. I read a lot of people have trouble 4 times a year or 4 times a month ... does anyone have a car that the a/v system works perfect? I wonder... but if you talk to other people that drive a $45,000.00 list price car they don't have these problems ... BMW may not be the answer but I might just get a car that the am will work. all you have to do is plug in your ipod to a bmw or mercedes and see what cars can do. They are so fast you can find a song in a flash, they work like star trek compaired to hyundia & with ours if you get something your happy that you have sound !!!! the sad thing is when it does play it sounds great .... JUST TO MUCH CRAP FOR ME TO KEEP IT. Also when I spend that much money on any car I want to know the car company will stand behind the car & make it work. In this case I really don't think Hyundai cares about making it right. they just want to sell cars & expect people to live with it. They are right I will live with it for a while & never buy another hyundai. oh yea the tires that's a joke too! thanks to guys that understand & the best of luck with your car & car company ....I'M DONE. Like I said I QUIT !

Started car yesterday to find all audio completely dead, bluetooth too. Everything worked well visually except no change in volume control visual bar from radio knob or steering wheel. Found the factory reset mode, mashed it, shut off car for about five minutes, radio started to work again.

Software/Firmware or system memory problem?

After almost two weeks I just got a reply back from Hyundai in regards to the Check Antenna Error Message/loss of audio and nav. They basically said that since the dealer cannot duplicate the problem there is really not much that can be done as they will not authorize the dealer to replace parts just for the sake of replacing parts. I received a case number and was told to keep giving the dealer any info that would help them solve this problem, maybe I will take a copy of all the post on this forum in regards to this issue to the dealer.

Does not matter. Dealers continue to state that they are unaware of any issues. They wait for bulletins.
I have also printed information in this forum to guide them.
Just BS that we need to continue to educate them on issues that they should be aware of.

I received another email from Hyundai recommending me to help the dealership with this issue by giving them the time of day, certain audio/nav settings and temperature. This let's me know Hyundai knows more than they are willing to admit to.
To the poster I disagreed with about the heat theory, please accept my apologies as you may not be to far off the mark with that theory. I am going to talk with the service manager today but I do not look for any resolve until Hyundai steps to the plate and takes ownership of this problem.

I have experienced the same problem with my 2009 4.6L Genesis. Sometimes the volume and station/track changer on steering wheel will not work. My Ipod continually freezes and I have to unplug, plug it back in and sometimes it will continue to work. Other times it just freezes and I give up only for it to start working later when I get back in the car. I have taken it to my dealer who has changed the amplifier and supposedly whole stereo system with the same problem remaining. I love my car but hate my interactive music experience sucks. Ive also had my power tilt steering replaced after first month of ownership. Next time I will wait till the model has been out for a couple of years for the kinks to be fixed.

I just read a review from a auto magazine where during a test drive of the 2012 Genesis the audio/nav crashed twice and came back on after several minutes. IMO it is just a matter of time before Hyundai is going to have to deal with this more aggressively as also with the tilt wheel issue.

Well I guess the answer is not a 2012 ! Hyundai still selling the car knowing that the av system is CRAP and they don't care ... The dealers just keep saying they are unaware of anything wrong with system ...I THINK IT'S ALL BS and that's why I'm leaving this car co. LOOK at all the replys to this post !!! Except for a few jerks that want to talk about my CAPS the real deal is many of us have real bad ELECTRONICS in our cars I'm sure some people don't use the ipod or nav or am radio or voice ...but I use it all
IF IT WORKED ! ha,ha,ha & it's nice to know that my car is not the only one sorry to say... THAT DOES NOT WORK & THEY CAN'T FIX IT. So guys counting the days till my lease is up ... and bmw here I come ... on a side note I am thinking of taking the hit and selling my car and moving on ..so I don't live with this crap anymore ...

Sorry you are having so many electrical problems. Life is far to short to have a car bring you down. Just move on.

 Just picked up a 2011 4.6 fully loaded demo with 5K. The speakers cut out on a regular basis. I would first guess that its the amp, but the dealer plans to replace the radio. Glad I leased!

I purchased my 2012 back in July and my Nav system freezes up on a regular basis. I thought maybe it was my 120gb iPod causing it but I've since disconnected it for several days and it continues to do it. Once I park it and turn it back on after running some errands and it is ok. It is very frustrating! I have not contacted my dealership yet but will very soon. After reading all these posts I'm not very confident.

Had my 2011 4.6 tech for over a year and 40,000 miles. Not a single problem with the nav or sound system. Never a freeze and nav is used almost everyday and the sound system is used everyday for several hours. However, we do not use an Ipod. we use a 16gig usb thumb drive. The problem must be only in a limited number of cars and not a design problem.

Have owned 2011 4.6 since March. No electronics issues at all. I connect an iPhone and use XM a lot.

The only strange thing regarding my audio is that often the radio comes on in spite of being off when I previously shut the car down.

with 5k miles on the car, no problems at all.
i regularly use XM, mp3 DVDs that i burned, and a 16 GB USB drive.
also use the nav at least once a week.

Don't know if my experience will add anything, but I too have had problems with my audio. Both times, the entire audio system went silent; no radio, no CD, no XM, not even bluetooth phone audio, or warning beeps.

After parking for a few hours, all the above functioned as normal. I brought this problem to the attention of my dealer, but of course I was told " we have never experienced that phenomenum before?

Here's the odd part. All three times I experienced this problem, I was parked in a local hospital's parking garage. Never happened in highrise garages, just this one hospital parking garage. My guess is some sort of RF signal confusing the CPU and/or muting the audio. I would be interested to know if anyone else who has experienced this problem can link it to a specific location?
