Electronics in car a joke ... Mute,freeze,etc...give up !!!

I've had my 4.6 for 11 months and 37k miles. Will not buy another unless we get a major reengineering of the entire system. I've used the BMW system and owned an Infiniti G35 w/GPS and both are vastly superior.

The thing goes down without warning, but never long enough to get it to he dealer. The UIS is totally non-intuitive. Steve Jobs and Apple clearly did not design this thing.

They are very similarly equipped when it comes to electronics/convenience features: Bluetooth, navigation, back up camera, parking sonar, premium audio, etc. In the 2.5 years that I have owned the Infiniti, I haven't had one instance of electronic "gremlins" with any of these features. Approximately 5 times so far, the Genesis has had either back up camera blank screen or no audio. Both problems have fixed themselves and I've read about both on this forum.

Question: Are these small issues something we put up with given the tremendous value the Genesis is? Are they foretelling future, bigger issues? Is Korean auto manufacturing not up to Japan's level yet?

My Response
It's funny this topic has come up because I’ve thought about it also.
First like you let me say that I like my Genesis very much think it to be a fine car and enjoy all the pleasures the tech package very much. I own a 2007 G35x sedan with the tech options very similar since new and can say with all sincerity that the electronics while quite sophisticated have been rock solid and with a very large command vocabulary never noticed any odd behavior and have never had to have it serviced. While I like and use all the tech options on the Genesis it has had periodic hiccups. Not anything that I would really deem a problem and not frequent enough to worry me. In this age of multi processor controlled car systems Hyundai has done quite a decent job getting such complex systems as those in the Tech Package working as good as they do. Seeing as it’s quite infrequent and never the same system I’m undaunted by this. Hey…..the difference between Korean and Japanese electronics.

Well…I think it’s no coincidence that we both have to a similar conclusion.

I can say that we looked at and took a test drive in two BMW 535s and the salesman could not operate the BMW I drive system. The BMW audio system is beyond a joke and check consumer reports, it is not reliable.

Another case to add to the list:
I have had my 2011 with Tech Package for a year. Today I experienced no audio (radio, XM, Bluetooth, GPS) upon starting the car. The car had been off for hours on a relatively cool day. Shutting off and immediately restarting car had no effect. Came back 4 hours later and it functioned correctly. This was the first time this occurred in the year of ownership.

My turn.

2012 4.6 with less than 6000 miles, Total freeze-up has happened twice. Once after parking <5 hours for a round of golf.

Isn't Hyundai working on this or at least acknowledging there is a problem?

2009 4.6L w/Tech Pkg - I've had all the problems noted in this post, at completely random intervals. Sometimes I'll go months without a problem, then I'll have them back-to-back, sometimes the same day.

My strangest occurance was driving to church one Sunday. When I started the car to drive to church, nothing worked, none of the DIS, not even the speedometer or tach on the dash. When I got to church I couldn't even lock the doors using the key fob or the door button (had to use the key itself). After church, everything worked normally (my wife joked that I must have said the right prayers during church).

In my opinion this is an issue of poorly designed, integrated and tested software, the equivilant of the "blue screen of death". I've never looked at the code in the Genny, but my day job is in S/W development and the problems I see myself, and read about here, all point to poorly designed, integrated and tested software.

I love my 2010 Genesis V8 w/o Tech. I've consistently had problems with the tilt and telescoping issues and in the last several months my driver's seat is giving me issues. Since my wife is much shorter than I, when trying to switch between auto seat 1 and 2, the seat bearly moves, then stops. If I squeeze in, start the car and hit the button again, it moves all the way. I thought perhaps it was a battery issue but why would there be enough to start the car. Well the other day, my wife could not move the seat at all either from the auto sets or the manual controls, whether the car was started or not. She left if off for a few minutes, started the car and all was fine. This was for the first start of the morning and my cars are garage kept. I've thought about having a different dealer trying it but my guys are great and always give me a good loaner. They are trying but the biggest problem is that it is not a reproducible issue. Now that we have the same electronic issues for 4 years, I really wonder if Hyundai will ever find the issue or if they really care.

"I can not get it to the dealer because I am either not near the dealer or the dealership is closed when this happens." Hardly the fault of the car OR the dealer for that matter. Get it in to the dealer and don't bitch until you've done your part to "get 'er done". Geez....seems to be a fever going around.

The car was taken to the dealer but the dealer wanted the car brought back when the Audio/Nav failed again. Unfortunately every time it failed it would start working again and I was no where near the dealer or dealer was closed so in other words it always failed at the wrong time. Hyundai would not authorize any work to be done if the service department could not see the problem, which is a bunch of bull.
Hyundai knows about the problem but choses to do nothing or is taking their own dear time why the complaints from other owners keep mounting.
Oh yes ! I got her done got rid of the car and now all my issues and problems are solved. I still monitor this thread just to see if Hyundai has addressed the Issue as it is both the dealers and Hyundai's problem.
For the most part most people on this forum are respectful but I guess every now and than someone who think they know everything but does not know the time of day has to show themselves. If I were a moderator I would shut you down.

Hi ya guys .... I have spent much too much time on this & my 2010 v8 w/tech does the same thing ipod freeze, audio no sound, does not work but after parking it comes back !!! Well I hate to give you guys the bad news but in my opion the electronics in the car is just CRAP and nothing can fix it. HYUNDAI NEEDS TO CHANGE THE WHOLE SYSTEM IN THE NEW CARS COMING but that does not help me or you. So I have a little battery panasonic radio on the floor in the back & when my system goes out I just go battery fm radio...... and wire headset for my phone ( so I don't get a ticket) and call it a day !!! WHEN MY LEASE IS UP I'M DONE WITH HYUNDAI . oh yea I must have sent 25 emails to Hyundai usa & only got one answer ... he said I will get back to you ! ...still waiting it's been a few months ha,ha,ha but I must say other than the audio system I like the car very much ......... BUT I LIKE MY MUSIC MORE IN THE CAR !!!! I DO A LOT OF DRIVING ALONE SO TUNES ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO ME !!!! THE NAV ALSO TELLS YOU TO GO WRONG WAY !!! I DON'T USE IT .. JUST CRAP AT LEAST AROUND NYC ..... I WANTED TO SAVE A FEW BUCKS AND GOT WHAT I PAID FOR !!! BMW HERE I COME 18 MONTHS TILL I GET MY NEW BMW 535I CAN'T WAIT ...GOOD LUCK !!

UPDATE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..... HYUNDAI SENT ME A DEALER CREDIT GOOD FOR 6 MONTHS $250.00 .... AND SAID MORE OR LESS WE CAN'T FIX IT HAVE A NICE DAY !!!!! I guess it's something but HYUNDAI can kiss my ass I'm done and will never buy another HYUNDAI again.

Had my first problem with the Genesis last night. I lost all audio with the NAV and radio. I could move to different screens but had no audio of any kind. I tried to use voice command button on the steering wheel but that did not activate. I couldn't use the knob to check surround sound.

I restarted the engine a few times but nothing helped. Finally everything mysteriously started working two hours later. I spoke to two dealers about this. Both said it would be best to go to the service dept while the problem was occuring which is almost impossible. My dealer will look at it but I feel I'll blow half a day at the service dept and they can't do anything unless it breaks while they are looking at it.

My car is 10 days old and I'm very frustrated. This should not happen. I loved the car until last night. I now believe I'll lose audio in the future until it gets fixed. Plus Hyundai doesn't provide loaner cars.

At this time I would not recommend the Genesis to my family and friends. I've never had a problem with a 10 day old car.

Fortunately, I've had only one brief glitch when my car was only a month or two old. The system became unresponsive but returned to normal after a restart.

As mcginnpm said upthread, I think that this may be a software/firmware issue, although hardware problems (such as components that are overly temperature-senstitive) may be contributing.

I doubt that any Hyundai dealers have the expertise to deal with problems like these - to them, the electronics are a black box that they can replace as a unit. Only Hyundai corporate has the resources to fix systemic problems.

Just wondered if you had an IPOD or usb plugged in at the time of malfunction?

Nattydread: I've done "my part". I spent 40 thousand hard earned dollars to see a major car component act up on a 10 day old car. Hopefully this is a one time event but I am doubtful of that. I don't have time to sit around a dealership for hours at a time while they look at my car.

homeofstone: I was definitely NOT using the IPOD or USB when my unit froze and I lost all audio.

Don't sit around the dealer. Get a dealer loaner car and put miles/wear on dealer's car until they get it fixed. We had AC probelms with our 2004 Acura and parts were on backorder so for about three weeks we had a loaner. During that time we also had several trips already planned, so about 4k miles later the dealer got his car back and I had a car that was fixed.

I don't think the dealer is obligated to provide a loaner car. Do they usually provider loaners?

Mine does, and my previous Acura dealer did and when I had a Mazda the dealer hear in Athens GA gave me a loaner. Depends I guess on the dealer and their customer service policy.

I have the same problem - i have a 2012 and it has been freezing up for months, a couple times per week. i can usually restart and it comes back. the dealer needs to see it when it is occurring so one saturday morning when i was pulling it out of the garage it did it so i ran it up to the dealer to look at it and they fit me in - i was there a little over an hour. they tried a software reboot but they suspected it was a hardware problem. so i setup an appointment (with loaner)during the week because the software (operating system company) people are only open during the week. they called me after an hour after opening and told me they ordered the entire nav, control head unit and will call me to reschedule once that comes in. so we will see if this fixes the problem!! I will let everyone know here!: rolleyes:
