In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Chaps forgive me as I know that there is a good chance this has been covered before but I'll be damed I can not find an answer via the search. I've had my Genesis now for 4 Months and I wanted to change the motor oil, now I do not know what type of oil is in there now (conventional or Synthetic oil).

Now heres my questions:

1) Is there a quick way to know what it is?
2) Does it matter if there is Synthetic in there now can I use conventional
3) If there is Synthetic of who knows what brand could another brand of Synthetic oil be used?

Again forgive me for asking what might seem to be a stupid questions

Hyundai does not require synthetic motor oil for the Genesis, so it is very unlikely that the factory fill is synthetic. If you purchased your car used, I don't know how to determine what is in there now. You can use conventional even if there is synthetic in there now. Personally, I always use synthetic, and would highly recommend it if you have a Genesis GDI engine. If you do your own oil changes, then using synthetic should cost you no more than $10 extra compared to conventional. There is also the option of synthetic blend.

Also, you may use any brand that meets the specifications and certifications listed in your Owners Manual. Switching brands is not a problem, either for conventional or synthetic. In terms of viscosity, many people use 0W-30 or 5W-30 even though Hyundai recommends 5W-20.

Thank you for a quick reply, I did purchased used from a hyundai Dealer and you probably are correct in saying that the dealer before turing it over to me just used a conventional oil. I personally have always used Mobil 1 full synthetic in all my cars.

The one time I let my dealer change the oil in my Genesis, they said they now use a synthetic blend for all oil changes (and they use 5W-30). The Walmart where I live has reduced the price of Mobil 1 to $22.47 for a 5-quart jug.

I just had my first oil change. Paid 89.00 for pure synthetic.
Brand is Amsoil grade 5W-20 or 30?
I prefer that the dealer uses its own oil to avoid any potential conflict in the future.
It is a lease and I plan to acquire the car at the end.

A quick question is there such a thing as a "spin on" oil filter for the Genesis? I know that the OEM filer is paper, but I wanted to know if anyone here as any experience with using a "spin on" type oil filer

No, not that I know of. It uses the canister as do BMW'S and Mercedes' filters. Be sure to use proper filters for correct oil flow and pressure.

You can change from dino to synthetic or synthetic to dino without problems. If you've been happy with Mobil 1, just get some 5w-30 (or 0w-30) and have the dealer use it. That's what I have done so far.

By the way, there seems to be some correlation between reduced oil consumption with the 5w-30 oil compared to using 5w-20 oil. Hyundai also says a 5w-30 oil is OK to use.

Amsoil sells 3 different kinds of oil:
  • OE Synthetic Motor Oil - This is a 100% Group III synthetic (made from hydrocracked mineral oil) similar to Castrol Syntec, Valvoline SynPower, or Pennzoil Platinum. It is API certified.
  • XL Extended Life Synthetic - This is a blend of Group III and IV (PAO) synthetic stocks similar to Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Ultra. It is API certified.
  • Signature Series Synthetic - This is made from Group IV and V (ester) synthetic stocks. It is not API certified because it contains too much phosphorus and zinc to meet specs (good for engine, very bad for emissions system life).
Amsoil typically does a bait and switch, telling people how great that Signature Series does in engine wear tests, and then selling people the other oils that are API certified (and more reasonably priced). One should not use the Signature Series Synthetic because it could void the manufacturer's warranty (not to mention that it is quite expensive).

Of course, I assume that people know that Amsoil does not own a refinery, and they just blend oil stocks and additives they purchase from major oil/additive companies.

I certainly have no objection to using 0W-30 or 5W-30 on the Genesis; however, I am not aware of anyone with the V6 that has had oil consumption issues when using 5W-20 or 0W-20 oil (most oil consumption issues have been with the V8 GDI).

Great info! Thanks. I will be in the US next week and check exactly what is in my car. Anyway, it is from the dealers stock.
