  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

First oil change?

I changed my oil today. I have the 5.0 v8. The oil filter is not that easy to unscrew. what tool are you all using to unscrew the main cap for the oil filter?

Just to not confuse others, this is for the Gen2 V8 ONLY

You start off by removing the filter housing drain plug found on the very end of the filter housing to drain the oil. Once removed, this gives you access to use a 24mm socket to unscrew the housing. Quite straight forward.

Thanks for all the replies.

Had dealer change oil last week. I think it was around $30 for 5w-30 Syn Blend. This is a great price, especially given the hassle of removing the two panels etc. I’ve always been a do-your-own Mob-1 oil-change guy but I think I’m ok with letting dealer do it going forward. I can swing by there on way home from work and they have it done in 45min or less. I also pointed out the brittle fasteners and they reassured me if they break one they replace it. Haven't crawled under it to see yet but i will.

There’s millions of high-mileage cars on the road with regular dino oil with no issues so I don’t think there’s a reliability/performance risk. If this was a turbo or high-revving V6 I’d stay with Mob-1.

Only minor issue was it was overfilled just a bit, ~ 1/8" above hash mark which should be fine. Dealer offered to immediately re-change oil for free if I wanted them to but I declined – didn’t want to be the ‘customer from xxxx’ ! The fact that they offered was all I wanted to hear.

I thought that might be the case to use a socket on bottom of the housing. However I didn't want to break it as it seems to be made out of a plastic material. So I thought some type of oil filter wrench that would fit around larger upper part of the housing might be better. I ended up using a oil filter strap that I have used on conventional oil filters. But it was not that easy to use on this type.

A cup wrench for the filter cap would be nice - but it would have to be a rather specialized item for the 5.0 V8 and is not available so far to my knowledge.

The drain plug on the end of the cap (the "drain bolt") takes a 6 mm hex which is available at AutoZone in the ratchet driven version - except you have to buy a whole set.
