  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

first service is when?

another difference for CAD owners: we do not have Genesis dealers (in BC at least), so servicing is done at a Hyundai dealer with Genesis approved/trained techs. these dealers do have shared branding with Genesis, but they are legacy Hyundai dealers. for routine maintenance, i.e. oil changes, my hunch is that any shop hand will do this with perhaps the Gen tech looking things over as the quality checker.

as for oil spec up here, all complimentary maintenance includes fully synthetic. if a dealer does not follow this they are not complying with Gen Canada requirements.

...Quaker State which is the oil that is recommended by Genesis in the manual.

^ under my hood it says Shell Helix is the factory fill and i've spent a bit of time trying to source Shell Helix oils, which are fully synthetic, with no luck. anyone find them anywhere?

Is your manual different also or does that still say Quaker State?

Mine does as well. Shell owns Pennzoil and Quaker State.

From what I can tell...Helix is not available in the USA or Canada (only in Europe, etc)...and the equivalent is Pennzoil Ultra.

Seems like Shell oils in the USA (Rotella) are more for diesel and trucks. Pennzoil/QS for others.

So...since all this is confusing...I decided to investigate a bit more.

Under the hood we have Quaker State and Shell Helix...in North American Cars. In the manual we see Quaker State and an ACEA A5/B5.

So...
- No Shell Helix in NA
- No Quaker State fully synthetic with ACEA A5/B5 rating

Confusing right?

I called Shell...and talked to a Pennzoil/QS tech.

Essentially...the Pennzoil is the big boy of oils (within Shell). High performance cars have Pennzoil. Pennzoil also meets all the regulations, etc. For some reason...they don't fork out the bucks to get QS certified with ACEA.

To add...GF5 is more of a fuel economy rating. It has nothing to do with whether an oil is a blend or fully synthetic.

So take all that as you will. Genesis seems to be tied with Shell...so they should be using the Pennzoil Ultra to meet the spec they put in the manual. This is per the tech...and I totally agree.

Over and out...B.

^ going from memory that looks the same. it does mention QS, but the under hood sticker says Shell Helix. Beefer made a good point about lack of Helix in NA markets.

i've gone with Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40 for my mid-cycle OCI, with 5W40 called up on the viscosity chart for the 2.0T. it comes closest to matching factory specs and provides hotter-temp summer protection.

once a year is not enough for my liking (old habits die hard), so i am paying out of pocket for 6 month changes by myself.

the dealer will use full synthetic 0W-30 which i'm fine with for cooler winter months. my OCI cycle works well for this. free Genesis services late September with 0W-30, my own changes in March with 5W-40.

Not just an old habit, but a good one and still applicable to this car. The manual states that under 'harsh conditions' they recommend changing the oil every 3,000 miles, instead of the regular 6,000 mile interval. Now, given that driving up and down hills meets the 'harsh conditions' definition spelled out in the manual, I'd say changing at least every 6 months is not only a good idea, but probably a requirement for us that use our cars as a daily driver.

^ yup. if only i drove more, then mileage would trigger my service. as it is, i only put on 7-8000kms a year (~5k miles). so i've always used the 6 month OCI as my metric. lots of city driving, stop and go. that's severe or harsh enough to justify the additional servicing in my books...

I am quoting myself here...as I am following up.

So this is crazy. I actually got a call back from the Shell tech. He talked to a bunch of engineers...and even their marketing guys. They are all freaking out about our engine sticker and the user manual. Apparently in this crazy world nowadays...there can be lawsuits, etc.

So they are now frantically working at getting with Genesis to get the manual corrected to Pennzoil...and to correct the sticker on the engine bay to be the same (and remove Shell Helix)...for North America.

Wow...this is nuts...LOL. He is going to keep me posted...so I will do the same here (if anyone cares).

Oh dang! Yeah, I guess someone could sue them for advertising their oil that doesn't meet the ACEA5 specs on a car that requires it. Haha.

Does anyone know what type of oil the car comes with from the factory? Do the service techs usually change the oil straight away after receiving the car at the dealer?

^ it is supposed to come with a Shell product. So who knows...Pennzoil, QS...definitely not Helix.

Right so if the manual doesn't state that full synthetic is required it's safe to assume they used a blend at the factory.

^ wrong...full synthetic at the factory.

i bet Shell Helix is indeed available in Korea where our cars are manufactured, so the underhood factory fill sticker saying "Shell Helix" must be accurate. this means we do get fully synthetic Helix oil from HMA. and in Canada all servicing includes fully synthetic, but clearly not Helix (i assume QS). i will be sure to inquire what the service fill is at my first 'free' dealer service. hopefully it is Pennzoil Platinum, but we'll see...

Helix is only available in Europe and South Africa...so no it is not in our cars.
Found out Helix is also available in Asia...so you were correct. So now I can only assume that it indeed is Shell Helix fully synthetic.

I actually sent in inquiry to Genesis in S.Korea...asking exactly what oil (or if they rotate, etc) is in the G70 engine.

Good move, let's hope they answer.

^ interesting. so the Shell guys you spoke with are right to be confused (or freaked out) about the reference to Helix products. curious...
