  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

flutter @ 25-30mph

Dec 29, 2019 - I had the same problem, they replaced the drive shaft But the issue did not go away. The noise stopped but I still get a vibration at exactly 28 mph at cold start. Goes away after about 10 minutes. They tell me it is the tires, they recommend putting on the original spec Michelin’s. I am dubious but have seen posts on other blogs that this can work.
Please do not use these garbage tires. My $0.02.

I had my tires road force balanced by discount tire and they said there were no issues with any of the wheels being bent or having excessive runoff. Vibration still there.

Next step is replacing the tires as they’re at the end of their life. Evenly worn but getting down there in tread.

Just picked up car. Rep test drove the vehicle before I picked it up. No fluttering noise. I drove around for a few minutes and no fluttering noise. Hopefully this is a fix. I will continue to monitor and will post if noise returns.
Hey did noise ever return. Just bought a 2016 Genesis certified used car with the same problem..about how much was the cost ? Is it covered under the 100k powertrain warranty?

If your car is Hyundai certified then yes the 100K powertrain warranty applies.

Replacing the driveshaft will eliminate the flutter sound, however that introduces a new more pronounced vibration at 28 mph that goes away after about 10 minutes.

This seems to be consistent. I have seen no posts that declare the problem is completely fixed. There may be a new driveshaft replacement available n the future.

Problem completely fixed. Attached to this note is the repair order. No new issue introduced following replacement of the propeller shaft/driveshaft assembly.

Congrats! You are the first person I’ve heard from that successfully fixed the problem. They did the exact same thing for me and many others but it created a new vibration - stronger than before - at 28 mph. Some people have had several different drive shaft assemblies installed with similar unsuccessful resolution.

That's really unfortunate. This may sound cliche -- I hope they solve the underlying problem your vehicle has.

I hope you bought a vehicle service contract to cover all mechanic, computer, and electronic repairs, and are not relying just on the factory warranty with its limitations, exceptions to rules, and a very short limited manufacturer defect warranty (only the limited power train warranty goes to 100,000 miles). I wrapped mine all components [except for wearable items] to 100,000 miles or 2017-2027, whichever comes first.

Has anyone tried balancing their driveshaft? I think machine shops do it. I am considering getting some quotes just to entertain the idea.

Ho long ago was this repair? They did the same repair to my car and it was great for a month or two and then the new vibration started and has continued to get worse ever since.

I purchased the car in April 2016, waited two years until spring 2018 to address the flutter at the dealer; it took about two years for the noise at 25 mph - 30mph to really annoy me, worsening with time. They drove it around, isolated the problem, replaced the item, and I have not had a single flutter since.

What item did the dealer replace?

I also have the prop shaft flutter noise and will get it addressed very soon.
Had the differential replaced to solve a whine at 44 to 60 and it is quiet as a mouse, so now I can hear the prop shaft flutter. These cars are too quiet.

Dealer replaced the driveshaft (see attached) and the fluttering/center dash rattle between 25-35 mph is gone, which has always been noticeable during the first 10 minutes or so after a cold start.IMG_20200128_084250.webp

Car is a 2015 3.8 with 31K miles.

This is fantastic and just the type of customer service I expect but unfortunately haven't received from my Genesis dealer.

Last time I had my car in for this continued issue, on my test drive with the only Genesis tech my dealer employs he said he heard "a noise" whether it was the one I was talking about or not. We talked for the remainder of the drive (with me constantly accel/decel so the noise would come and go) about how noises like that are so hard and being able to fix it would just be a matter of how much money in parts Hyundai wanted to randomly throw at the problem (keep in mind this is after me telling my service adviser, service manager and this tech about this very forum where the best solution seemed to be a new driveshaft assembly) so it probably wasn't going to happen. He basically admitted that he wouldn't even attempt to diagnose it. Then when we got back into the shop to talk to my service adviser, he just blatantly lied and said maybe he heard a noise, maybe he didn't but he didn't think even if he took my car back out right now he'd be able to pinpoint it again...

Has anyone had any luck pressing this issue with Hyundai Consumer Affairs, or a dealer that is unwilling to listen? Should I attempt to take it to another dealer for diagnosis? (My dealer, which is actually no the closest to me, the closest one is Hyundai only and they don't know their head from their ass, typically treats me right and even though I've been inconvenienced over timelines, loaner availability and dealing with Hyundai corporate, in the end they've addressed absolutely everything else to my satisfaction. But they just refuse to look into this at all.)

I'm out of warranty, but this concern was brought up to the dealer and documented numerous times prior to warranty expiration (due to time, not miles, as I am the second owner and only have 56k miles). Regardless of warranty coverage, they should at least be able to confirm the noise is abnormal and diagnose what it would take to fix no matter whose dime it's on...

I've said it before, but this is the reason Genesis can't gain any traction as a brand. They make fantastic product (have you guys seen the GV80!?) and then refuse to provide good customer service after the fact...

Yeah, I know. Service advisers are not there to help you. They are there to sell you as much crap as they can. They are usually ill-qualified and ignorant on car repair and are terrible at customer service. They have little motivation to help you. Often they have zero mechanical background. And that goes double for warranty repairs.

That's why I just ignore the flutter. Because if I took it in, the service adviser wouldn't understand the problem and would not be capable of writing it down on the work order. They would send the car back to the tech, then try to sell me on a fuel induction cleaning and a coolant flush. Meanwhile, the tech will often be little more than a parts-changer. He'd likely not make a diagnosis and then charge me $100 for an hour. Of course, my car would have been sitting at the dealership for several hours or up to a day.

At best, you can count on getting satisfaction from the dealer 40% of the time.

I can't believe I finally found this thread. If you look at my submitted content on this forum I was having the same issue and couldn't figure it out recently. Took it to dealership and they replaced entire transmission under CPO warranty. Fluttering sound was still there after pick up the next day though.

I was taking my car to Mavis tire today to have wheel bearings, brake pads, and tires checked for anything that was causing the 25-35mph flutter. Flat spot in tire, unevenly worn brake pad, rotor issue, bad bearing, etc. I was planning on needing new tires and dropping $1k on replacements that I may not need right away which is awesome! I'm going to share this thread with a service adviser at the dealership that I worked with before and see if they can assist. I hope that if the drive shaft is replaced it doesn't develop the vibration issue some mention.
