  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

G70 to be discontinued

It's funny, I haven't decided which I prefer yet. I think both the original and the new G70 look great. Let's just hope they don't hire the BMW designer, haha. (I believe his nickname is Bucky 😂)

Whatever the real reason is, I have heard the same story at multiple dealerships.

We all have our opinions on the look and while I don’t hate the new look, I kept my 20 based on it.

That hurts sales and many cars are repeat buyers and my salesman said he heard the same from many people and other salespeople.

It may not be the main reason but it doesn’t help.

At least it’s not as bad as the Tundra redesign lol

Like @Backslack said, sales are up not down. Watch reviews of the new G70. 95% love it and don't think it's a step back in any sense.

Totally fine to love your first gen and I did too but the new version looks fantastic as well and matches the Genesis design language.

Again this is just from multiple dealers not me.l although I turned down the next gen based off looks.

It makes no sense to cancel a car with rising sales though.

I was waiting to see the next generation too.

I had a g80 loaner oh man the comfort was much nicer however even when hooked up I’m not a fan so no way.

That's why Genesis confirmed they are not cancelling it.

I hope the G70 sticks around because it's a great way to get your feet into the brand. The G80 is a big step up in price. I see so many G70s every day and very few G80s and G90s. I think many people will skip the brand without a somewhat affordable entry option...

Wait what lol

So they are not canceling the G70 🤣

Ok well good I am waiting and hoping the next gen is amazing.

The fact that the vehicle is being called the "GT1" means it won't be a big boat like the G80. The chauffeur role of Kia has already been relegated to the K8, which they even renamed from the K7 to denote its rise in status. Not to mention that the Stinger has always been a bigger vehicle than the G70.

Didn't say that it was going to be the same size as the G80, but closer, and more importantly, more upmarket than its predecessor.

Both things are needed to even have a chance in its domestic market.

More importantly, the Stinger was on its deathbed globally well before they announced the cancellation, with the axing of the 4-cylinder in most global markets and getting the 2.5T years before the G70 to incentivize sales.

Kia axed both the diesel and the 4-pot in Europe, and despite the high CO2 taxes (as well as having been canceled), the V6 Stinger still outsells the G70 in Germany and Switzerland (also vastly outsells the G70 in Australia).

And prior to that, the Stinger would outsell the entire RWD lineups for Lexus and Infiniti in Germany by a good margin.

Even with adding a shooting brake bodystyle, the G70 doesn't even come close see to those nos.

G70 sales were double that of the Stinger in South Korea. HMG saw less of a case to keep that vehicle alive than the G70- yet an EV replacement is being developed anyway.

Genesis already has the G80 and G90 for the Korean market.

With the K9 being dropped, Kia needs a RWD "sedan" to slot above the K8, as the upper end of the lux market is highly lucrative in Korea.

Would not be surprised if this Stinger "replacement" is a good bit closer to the price of the Electrified G80 than the G70.

The only "Genesis coupe" we may be getting in the near future is the X, which has literally nothing to do with the sedans.

The coupe was never going to be a 2-door version of the existing sedans, but a different design.

However, the initial plan for the Genesis lineup called for an entry-level/compact coupe, but they abandoned that plan and decided to go with a larger (midsize) 2-door (despite the higher price segment) as that would be something more likely to sell in Korea than a competitor to the 4 Series.

That the sales numbers are even within reach of each other in these countries despite Genesis not even having a proper dealer network in any of these countries says more about the Kia than it does the Genesis...

Can't keep using that excuse as the GV70 doesn't seem to have any problem selling in far greater nos. than the G70.

For instance, for May/June in Australia, Kia moved 641 Stingers, with only a handful being the 4 pot, so healthy margins.

Genesis, otoh, sold a measly 11 G70s, but managed to move 280 GV70s.

Here, Genesis sales are up 21.7% for the year, but G70 sales are down 4.6%.

And that's despite the G70 being priced a good bit lower (relative to its competition) than the GV70, and having by far the largest discounts in the Genesis lineup.

I also think the first version is better looking. I have bought an enourmous number of vehicles in my life, so it’s not like it’s common for me to dislike a mid cycle update. I don’t hate the refresh, but I think my 2021 is much better looking.

I mentioned here a few weeks ago that I recently had an identically equipped 2023 loaner. There were several changes to menus and changes to the dash information screen I did not like nearly as well either. And I spent nearly a week in the car so it’s not like I didn’t have time to mess with things several times.

To be clear, the changes would not stop me from buying one, but they did not tug at my sleeve either to make me want to buy one. That is very unusual for me. I normally am always chomping at the bit to buy the latest.

I too am partial to the pre-facelift, but I don't think the restyle is that bad. Only knock I can throw its way is that the two-line headlight styling doesn't work as well when scaled down to a compact sedan.

While prefer the F/L over the anonymous looking pre-F/L, it's not as well sorted out as it could have been as a clean sheet design.

Don't think the compact size has as much to do with it as the GV70's headlight/taillight treatment is better sorted out than on its larger sibling.

I agree that the G70 is a great car to get familiar with the Genesis brand.

It's funny. Out here in the Northeast, I don't see many G70's at all. I think I've seen maybe 3 in total, if that. That reason had a very small part in why I went with the G70 somewhat. Stand out from the norm.

I assume the final verdict is that the G70 will be discontinued? It's a shame since I was looking at purchasing the G70 - the G80 is a little too much $$

That’s exactly why I bought the 70! G80 way too much!!

Genesis said it's not being cancelled.. though they could just be taking about the current ice car..

I really don’t think we have any even remotely credible information saying it is on its death bed.

As far as looks go, I was in the camp of the face-lift looking a little odd. I had a GV70 for 1.5 years and loved every bit of it, inside and out. I really do think the GV70 is the perfect proportion for the face-lift design. I actually don't like how the GV80 looks, the G80 also looks good because it's pretty much the same dimensions in the front end as a car version of the GV70.

I used to see the 2022 G70's driving around and it looked odd at first, but maybe since I owned the GV70 I got used to it and I do love how my 2023 G70 looks now.

As far as sales, this ridiculous trend of larger vehicles really urks me. As others have said the price of a G80 is substantially higher, the G70 allows people to get into the brand at an "affordable" price compared to other big brands it competes with. So if the G70 goes away you'll be spending $65-75k for a comparable vehicle. A lot of people can't do that. My loaded GV70 was 64k new, and now I'd have to spend more than that for a car?

I personally think (as a non Genesis executive and a forum keyboard warrior) that Genesis is shooting itself in the foot here. First of all Genesis as a brand is new and doesn't have much recognition in the entire vehicle market. Second, they don't advertise the G70 at all. They don't really even market the brand to be honest. When I was looking for a G70 a few months ago the most any dealership had within an hour driving from my house was maybe 5 G70's. That's split between 2.0 and 3.3, and then split again between packages. Forget about choosing a color at that point. The dealership I bought my GV70 from had I think 2 or 3 on the lot.

I just don't think Hyundai as a whole is really pushing the Gensis brand. Yeah they're making dealerships now, but the rare few Genezis dealerships are the only ones with a full inventory. I actually traded in my GV70 and got $8k in return to use as my down payment because there basically aren't any GV70's around here.

If Genesis made more vehicles I imagine they'd sell more vehicles. 3-5 cars on a Hyundai lot is nothing when you go to a Genesis dealer in another state (Atlanta, GA) and they had a full lot of vehicles plus another storage lot offsite with more vehicles. You could pick and choose anything you wanted on top of having the new models like the GV70e.

The G80 Sport is intriguing, but I don't think it'll be intriguing enough to 1) capture someone looking at an M340i, and 2) keep an existing G70 owner around when it costs nearly what an M340i or Audi S4/St costs. Honestly if this is the trend my next vehicle will probably be an S4/S5 since it's the closest in price as a G70. I personally just can't justify a $10-15k markup for a BMW. And the G80 Sport won't be Sport enough to keep the G70 owners attention.

If the G70 is really getting the newer 2.5T (it should), then it's almost obvious it's not going to get cancelled in a year or two. The better question is if the dated 3.3T is also getting replaced by the newer 3.5T. The other reality is the G70 is a size almost nobody wants, so not sure it'll fare much better even in 2.5T guise. In my humble opinion, either the G70 or G80 will have to go; there's no room for both. We'll see.

I'm not sure I see that the G70 is an option people don't want. I don't see the M340i, RS3/S4/S5, or C43 being announced to be cancelled. And all of those brands have their own G70 sized vehicle and G80 sized vehicle. I really do think Genesis hasn't marketed anything, they especially haven't done anything to market the G70, and now they claim no one is buying it. Meanwhile, they market the crap out of the Elantra N since that's their race platform and they're pushing the new electric Elantra N all over the place, etc. I just don't see that they're fully in on the Genesis brand even though they're pushing to have full dealerships built. All of the other brands market their luxury models except Hyundai.

I've seen quite a few Genesis advertisments compared to the past. Seems they have increased marketing the past year, at least here. May be regional

Should they continue with the G70? Decisions like that are usually dollar driven. If not as profitable they will put their resources where return is better.
