  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

G70 US Availability?

My local Genesis/Hyundai dealer already does this. They have a separate showroom, entrance door, and advertising for Genesis. It is the same building as Hyundai, but a totally different showroom (albeit a very small showroom, but separate nonetheless). The only things they don't have are a separate lot to store Genesis vehicles, a physical marquee sign outside denoting the Genesis brand, and a separate waiting room for Genesis customers. Adding these things would be a very quick upgrade to their situation and one that would be much appreciated.

As has been noted earlier, people don't mind if their car is worked on by the same Hyundai mechanics, but they just don't want to wait in the same waiting room and be treated the same as Hyundai customers. All they need is a separate, smaller waiting room for Genesis customers and maybe some training on luxury customer relations and most people would be very happy indeed.

mistake post... sorry

Would not Genesis require a separate service center and waiting area as well?

I reached out to my local Hyundai/Genesis dealership. I got a message from them stating that they will be a Genesis dealership and they just signed the contract. They currently have a separate building which they built when they were selling the Equus. That building has a showroom and a service area. It currently is still has signage saying it is Hyundai but I suspect that will change shortly. These two facilities do share the lot but are completely independent from each other. I will give their Genesis specialist a call when I get a chance. From his message he said they just signed the contract. This is in the Chicago area in Illinois.

Article doesn't say anything about separate service center. Just says requires distinctly separating Hyundai and Genesis in the showroom as well as training on luxury expectations.

I reached out to my local Hyundai/Genesis dealer and he said that they will continue to sell Genesis in 2019 and beyond. Had not clue on the timing of everything but, as stated above, that dealer already has a separate showroom... just no separate service center yet (if ever)

All this information clarifies the process considerably but also suggests that it could be a fairly substantial delay before all of the distributor and dealer licenses are issued in every state. Presumably, when everything is ready in a particular state, they'll start to see cars. Other states, in contrast, may have a long wait. Now, in contrast to importing from Canada, I've made out-of-state auto purchases in the past and that really wasn't a huge hassle. If dealerships on one side of a state line get inventory when those on the other side are still waiting, that could really be a knife through the heart for the dealer on the wrong side of the line. Maybe, in the grand scheme of things, that's a rare enough scenario not to matter. But in much of the east, the states are geographically small and thus the trip to an adjacent state isn't that onerous.

All this could be avoided if Genesis waited until all states had issued all approvals. But that has an even worse downside, it seems to me. Keeping everybody waiting is just going to alienate the potential buyer base further and push availability toward winter.

I wonder if dealers are factoring these issues into their decision to become a Genesis dealer. If I were a dealer and knew that the licensing process in my state was a lot slower than in a nearby state, I might fear losing a lot of customers to out-of-state dealers who got licensed sooner than I did. Ugh! What a mess.

A separate waiting room and service center seems a bit pretentious. If the mechanics are certified to work on my car, I don't mind sharing space with Accent owners. My local Ford dealers sell and service Ford & Lincolns from the same facilities.

I agree with you. But in order to be considered on par with BMW and MB and Audi, they need to make changes like that.

Nice grammar in the heading...LOL. Well folks...author spoke to Ken Smith...says a couple of weeks !!!

Auto review: Indecisive about which sports sedan to buy? Not once you drive the Genesis G70

Not to quibble, but, the quote in the article states: "with the initial handful opening in the next few weeks, according to Genesis spokesperson Kevin Smith. " The key word is "handful". As in 5!

Apologies if this isn't following the rules of the forum, but I would like to know which Maryland dealership you were talking about. I've called several Hyundai dealerships that had carried the G80, just haven't received any decent information (color me shocked based on the information I've been following in this thread from some time).

Probably all in Virginia...LOL. VA was one of the first to get on board and get all their paperwork done. They have been ready for a long time.

Think I saw a post where an Illinois dealer was ready to go? In any case, a handful is going to be spread really, really thin across the US.

Kinda like Canada...so no biggie (for now) :)

A biggie if you reside in a state or locality where there will be no dealers for an unknown period of time.

Makes sense. No need for separate service area. It does not matter the lift it is on, it does matter who is under the lift. I'm sure they will have some training for at least some of the techs.

I'm sure they will have some training for at least some of the techs.

My dealer has had Genesis qualified techs for years. My 2015 3.8 Ultimate was serviced for 3 years exclusively by Genesis certified techs. Recognizing that those same techs also worked on Hyundai's as well. Presume that current Hyundai/Genesis dealers would be the same.

Its all relative. How far is far? Nearest Lexus, Mercedes, BMW dealer is an hour from me. Jaguar and Land Rover are 1 1/2 hours, Maserati is close to three hours. Ford, Chevy, Chrysler are less than 10 minutes. Genesis is either 20 or 60 minutes.

For me, none of them is a big deal but some people don't want to travel that far for anything.

Funny thing is...I have had several Audi's and Infiniti's. Both have dealers close to me. But for my cars...I traveled outside of VA to get them...as the dealers gave me better deals !!! My current A4...I drove 2+ hours into NC to get it. Made a day of it. Long drive option back through twisties...nice lunch...etc.

It not only has to do with how far. More importantly is whether you are crossing state lines. The myriad of laws and regulations between any two states governing the purchase, transit, title transfer, registration and taxes/fees is significant.
