  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

G70 US Availability?

So what I hear you saying is that we need to figure out which port these cars are being held at, then have one of us sneak in and take a picture of the sticker containing the MSRP and then share it with the forum.

I like it.
A car that has not been delivered to a dealership has a "shipping sticker" which has stuff like VIN, model, year etc, but no price, or any equipment. So you're out of luck on that one. The dealership actually prints the stickers from the manufacturer once the vehicles arrive on the lot.

When I worked for a BMW dealer, all the vehicles came to the dealership with one window sticker in place and one additional in the glove box. We did not print them at the dealership and they had our dealer name and all pricing on them. It may be different for the Hyundai group.

I have been working with 2 dealerships to get more information on the availability of the G70, and each said that prior to them being able to sell the G70 that they will need to get training on it. To date, there is no information on when this might be. One dealership, which is the biggest Genesis dealer in Northen CA, said that they were told that they could not sell any new Genesis cars right now, which was confusing since they have been selling Genesis for a long time now.
I also heard that the G70 cars are sitting behind locked gates at the local import docks in Benicia, CA.

So, I followed up by contacting Genesis customer support, and got some interesting information ...

There appears to be a problem with selling Genesis cars under the proposed Genesis brand name. Obviously Hyundai has an export license for the Genesis cars, but it looks like they are having problems getting the export license under the Genesis brand name. This means that Hyundai could continue to sell the Genesis cars, but we all know that Hyundai want to sell them under the upscale Genesis brand.
I was told that Hyundai is actively trying to address this with the US authorities.

Maybe someone else can try calling the Genesis customer support number and see if they get similar information?

Interesting you say this. I was at a fairly large Hyundai dealership in Modesto, CA this past weekend and they did not have even one Genesis car. They said they sold them all. But considering you were told another large Hyundai dealership in CA could not sell Genesis, it begs the question as to what's going on here. The guy I spoke with said there were no firm plans as to whether they'd get the G70, but he was hopeful. Regardless, I would have thought they could continue selling the G80 and G90.

Based on the comments from the Hyundai dealership in San Jose, I think that all Genesis models might be on hold right now. Hyundai definitely wants to sell them under the Genesis brand, since their competition is upscale rivals like BMW, Lexus etc.

Probably some legal entanglements between the old agreements and new agreements to be a dealer. They may not be authorized at the moment.

Frustrating for people that want to buy a G70, but just imagine trying to make agreements with hundreds of dealers under slightly different laws in 50 states. Not the sort of thing that can be done by Temp labor.

This whole tale gets more and more baffling. While I'm sure the legal ins and outs are complex, a company that has been in the automotive business in the USA as long as Hyundai/Kia has should have been aware of what it would take to achieve their goals. It just astounds me that they keep running into roadblocks that they apparently never saw coming. How is that even possible? These issues should have been resolved ages ago, not just as they're hoping to get the cars out to dealers.

This is just conjecture but since you ask how could this happen I can think of this scenario. The brand was established late 2016. Corporate laid out its retail plan. Howlers the dealer did not think it was a good deal for them and decided to hold out for a better one. The dealers knew or thought that the longer they refused to sign the better negotiating position they would be in. Finally push came to shove and it became put up or shut up which is where we are now. It might not be that Genesis did not activists the issues, it might be that until the situation became immediate that they could strike a deal that they could live with. If the dealers hold out much longer they will have nothing to sell so finally some leverage for Genesis.

I agree. For some time I have thought this situation to be a "Mexican Standoff" between Genesis and the dealers.

Interesting possible development for my local dealer: last week I emailed my local Hyundai/Genesis dealer and asked about the G70 availability. He said no clue on when it will be available, but that they will definitely sell it when it becomes available.

This is a very large dealership that sells many brands (Nissan, Ram/Dodge/Jeep/Chrysler, Kia, Genesis, Toyota, Subaru). The other day driving past their large lots and multiple separate showrooms, I noticed that one of the smaller showrooms (think room inside for maybe two vehicles w/ only two service bays outside) was being completely gutted and remodeled inside and out. I think there is a possibility that this could be a Genesis standalone dealership being born! Potentially the first standalone Genesis dealer showroom in the country LOL

I will keep you guys posted on the status of this showroom, as this could give insight as to the situation that Genesis is facing, when badging and brand signs become visible outside.

Here they are 😀

(Well...these are screenshots from iPhone maps...of course, I have no idea what cars these are or when this was photographed. I didn’t even know that Benicia was an auto port)

Please review the US Import Data for Hyundai shipments. All shipments to US ports for Hyundai America (not Hyundai Canada) as far back as 06/14/18 (unable to check earlier than 06/14 without paying a subscription fee) reflect an unknown number of G70's in every shipment up to the last posted shipment on 07/19/18. This includes all US ports used by Hyundai ( SAN DIEGO, CA, PORT HUENEME, CA, PORTLAND, OR, BRUNSWICK, GA, PHILADELPHIA, PA). Be sure to ignore the shipments destined for Hyundai Canada.
Note: No new shipments identified since 07/19/18.

I'm getting really frustrated with the lack of communication between Genesis and the dealerships.

Side note: Does anyone know if the turn markers on the read are indeed halogen and NOT LED? That is really really unfortunate to hear if it is true. I'm not car savvy, but if they are not, how easy is it to turn the tail lights and turn signals to LEDs? Will they be as bright and good looking as say what most other modern cars have or will it look cheesy looking? Thanks.

Considering that stored cars would be "end to end" and "side by side" in a big lot, I did some zooming and found these lots (circled in red) with what looks like new cars. And some of them definitely look like G70's.

Who lives near Benicia, CA? Who is going to take one for the team and investigate this? Maybe pose as a security guard and jump a small fence or two? We need spy photos!! LOL

Google Maps image below was captured on 4/2/18. Not even sure if G70's were shipped before that date, but still lots of stored cars at that time.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!

How did G70's or any other Hyundai vehicles get in this port? USA Import Data for Hyundai (https://www.usaimportdata.com/usa-import-product-g70-importer-hyundai-exporter-hyundai.aspx) does not even identify Benicia as a port of entry. Unless they were shipped intermodel by rail transport to Benicia from Port Hueneme. CA?

That same data shows the first date of 06/14 for shipments to the US with G70's in the inventory.

And some of them definitely look like G70's.

As to identifying G70's in a satellite photo, you have superhuman vision. I have Google Earth Pro and at the closet magnification, I can not definitively identify specific cars especially with all of the protective white wraps the vehicles are covered in. If you can attach shots that show discernibly specific vehicles I would love to see them.
