G70 US Availability?

A new chapter of information from a Genesis representative.

Received a phone call at 13:00 EDT from a Brian Springer, Customer Relations Specialist, Genesis USA.
Recap of our conversation:
Calling on behalf of Genesis senior management.
He provided the following details:
1. The approval of various licensing requirements for all 50 states to allow for the sale of 2019 models to approved Genesis dealerships is a work in progress. Numerous states (He would not identify a number) have not approved the licensing process. The various states each have issues with Genesis that they, Genesis, are attempting to work through. He would not specify what those issues are and to what end they would be resolved.
2. Until a given state issue the various approvals there will be NO notifications from Genesis USA to prospective dealers in that given state to accept or decline the offer from Genesis to become a Genesis dealer. (Build out of a standalone dealership store will occur over prescribed timeline) Dealers have 60 days from issuance of the invitation to accept or decline the offer. Dealers in states where licensing approval has been granted have or are receiving their invitation to be a new Genesis dealer with the requisite 60-day response from the dealer.
3. States that significantly delay approval will prolong the availability of any (2019 G70, G80, G90) in that given state and the subsequent invitation for dealers to join the dealership program. He would not speculate on how many states are presenting issues and how long this process could take.
4. His best estimate on the availability of the G70 is mid to late September or October. This would only occur where the above-described approval process has been completed. (He gave me an example of California where the process is not resolved and dealers have not been notified.)
5 He responded to my concern on a given market not being granted a Genesis dealership with: That all 2017-18 models will be serviced by local Hyundai dealers. As previously known all 2019 models will only be sold and serviced through approved Genesis dealerships.
He expressed his appreciation of my concerns on both the dealership situation and the availability of any or all 2019 models. Genesis is aware of the concerns and the potential negatives of this rollout process and is doing everything possible to resolve the introduction of dealers and 2019 models as fast as possible. He committed to passing on my concerns on behalf of existing owners and potential new owners.

We chatted for 20+ minutes. If I recall any other salient information I will append this post.

That's a bummer. Great information, though. Thanks for the doing the due diligence and working to get more information. Two things:

1) Basically, if you do not have a Genesis dealer near you, you are SOL.
2) Maybe they'll be offering exclusive deals to people who signed up for the information and updates on their website... (obviously wishful thinking, but it would be nice for SOME courtesy to be extended to those of us who are hungry and want this vehicle and have expressed that interest strongly).

I've exchanged emails with a local Genesis dealer, so I guess New York State is not one of the problems.

So what about States like Virginia where everything is ready to go?

If, so then the proposed mid-September to October date apparently would apply for the availability of the G70 in Virginia. Lucky you, if accurate.

Yes...I am 100% positive. With that said...I don't see why they would wait that long.

I say VA gets em end of Aug...or first week of Sep.

1. Yes, SOL. That lack of a local dealership could be caused by either Genesis not extending a dealership offer or the dealer declining.
2. I wouldn't hold my breath.

My speculation would be that they will delay as long as possible to get as many states and dealerships on-board as possible. Rolling out a new brand and new car on a limited geographical basis could prove to be problematic and exacerbate their already significant issues.

Yeah...and that is what he told me. They do not want to scatter to badly timeline-wise. But...he did say some will start before others.

As I eluded in my prior post. The Rep was aware that they cannot delay endlessly. At least Virginia and Genesis have seen eye-to-eye.

Well, if the information larrymg1 got on the phone is accurate, this further underscores how badly Genesis has blown this model introduction in the US. These were foreseeable issues if they had been doing their due diligence. The laws in question weren't just written this week. The dealership sentiments were not unfathomable at the time the G70 and the independent Genesis brand were being conceptualized. These issues should have been uncovered and addressed ages ago.

By all accounts the G70 is a great car. But other good products have failed in the marketplace if their origination source bobbles things badly enough. I hope Genesis can right itself and eventually smooth things out. But this dealership fiasco is now largely out of their direct control. Had they anticipated it, as they should have, they at least could have managed it more strategically if not fully able to control it.

The plans for establishing the car as a true premium product with an outstanding customer experience delivered through exclusive dealerships are excellent. But only if they can be made to work. Perhaps they should have devoted a bit less time to honing the concept and a bit more to the realities of its implementation.

So when you say Genesis dealerships can only sell 2019 models, that's definitely new Genesis-only dealerships, right? So we have to wait for Genesis to get past the state regulations, offers to dealerships to convert to Genesis dealerships, and dealerships to secure land and build the dealerships before we can get a chance with the G70? And if you want to wait out the dealer price premium or wait for incentives, that's even longer. I'm all for waiting a few months, but this timeline is sounding more like a year. The G70 might as well be a 2020 model year lol.

What boggles my mind is the August sale estimate. That estimate wasn't even a month ago, so shouldn't these problems already have been known at that stage? I know getting government approvals can take forever, but the regulatory requirements and approximate timeline should have already been known.

I hate to believe that this is the case but it fits the facts until a better explanation comes along. One alternative, that they just didn't anticipate these issues or what it would take to resolve them, really isn't any more flattering to them.

Oh... I totally didn't know that they'd only be serviced through Genesis dealerships. That could be a huge factor for me since the closest one currently is an hour away from me. And with no word yet on which dealers will be added to see if there'll be one closer, it's definitely making me lean away from getting one now.

Possible there may be another but an hour is not a big deal. That is how far I go and if I don't want to, they will send someone to pick up the car. I guess we all look at things differently though, I drive that far for really good salami and Italian bread.
