  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

G80 Sport - discoloration of the dark chrome trim around the doors

I had this exact same issue. It was most prevalent on the driver side trim. In my case the it could not be buffed out. The lighter color spots was where the darker color (lacquer ???) was missing. The existing/remaining "lacquer" coating would have to be buffed out resulting in a lighter color trim. The large round lighter area in the attached picture is where I attempted to buff this out.

I suspect this existed at delivery, but didn't notice it until I washed car for the first time 2 weeks later. I took it back to dealer and they replaced the trim on ALL 4 side windows at no cost (covered under warranty). One piece of the new/replacement trim had a similar minor imperfection that I accepted. Estimated cost if I had to pay was $800USD.

My hypothesis is car is shipped with plastic protective film on this trim. When this film is removed by the dealer the "lacquer" is being removed/damaged. IMO this would be a defect in the darkening process/lacquer or the protective film (too sticky). The dealer service department indicated having seen a few other 2018 G80s with the same issue.
Same issue on my 2018 as well

Same issue on my 2018 as well

I was going to buy a 2019 g80 sport in Siberian Ice, but when I test drove the car I saw the driver side chrome piece completely faded, it looked like something from a 10 year old car, the passenger trim looked OK, it did have some fading but not as bad as the driver side. It's a shame because I liked the car otherwise but that made me not purchase the car.

I was in the same position as you; 2018 G80 Siberian ice pre owned. My dealer took photos and got approval to change all of the moldings around the windows and even the 2 rear side 1/4 windows with the trim built on them. The job cost over $2k to do and was completely covered under warranty! It’s hit or miss, another dealership wouldn’t do it so I went to another that went the extra mile.

Has anyone had experience working with Genesis directly on this issue? I just bought a 2018 G80 Siberian Ice pre-owned, but not from a Genesis dealer. I'm not sure if the warranty still applies to this and who I should work with.

Try your local genesis dealer, if they say it’s not covered, move on to the next dealership!

Did you buy yours from a hyundai / genesis dealer?

This car I was looking at was a used car at a Chrysler Jeep dealer.

Our 2018 G80 Sport (purchased a few weeks ago with 27K miles) has this issue. We took it to the Hyundai dealer today for an unrelated problem, and asked the service writer if they could be replaced under warranty. He looked into it and came back with a no, saying that Hyundai is "really cracking down" on that. Whatever that means. Cost out of pocket to replace is around $3200. 😭

The dealership is stealing from you. get the service manager and the director of sales involve. Works for me every time.

I went to another dealership and they were able to go the extra mile for me and get the repair approved. I suggest trying another until you find the right one.

Most likely. We took it to a body shop, and they quoted a significantly lower price to replace the exact same parts. However, after reading in either this thread or another that the replacement trim is doing the same thing, we decided to first try removing the tarnish/oxidation gently with a rubbing compound and then applying a high quality ceramic wax. So far, it looks beautiful. We don't have a Genesis dealer in our city, just a Hyundai dealer. We bought the car from out of state, so they have no skin in the game. We also don't have the option of running around to multiple dealers to try and get a better response.

While what you do in the end is up to you, but I see it pretty simply. If your car is still under warranty then it is still under warranty and this (as it ha been proved multiple times) is a warranty issue. PERIOD. If you want to let them get away without standing up to their promised agreement that is totally up to you. I personally would fight to the death over it.

i don't see the value of buying a $60,000 car and live in an area you can't get warranty service. BTW, you got a few recalls, what are you going to do about it?

I scheduled the ABS sensor recall yesterday with New Rochelle Genesis and copy/pasted the description of the recall from the webpage under the "tell us the issue". Earliest availability was 4/21- 30 minutes after I scheduled it they called me and left a msg saying they were cancelling my appointment because there is no fix for the issue yet. Seeing as part of the description is "THE SUBJECT VEHICLES ARE EQUIPPED WITH ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM ("ABS") MODULES THAT COULD MALFUNCTION INTERNALLY AND CAUSE AN ELECTRICAL SHORT OVER TIME POTENTIALLY RESULTING IN AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE. AN ELECTRICAL SHORT COULD RESULT IN SIGNIFICANT OVERCURRENT IN THE ABS MODULE INCREASING THE RISK OF AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE WHILE PARKED OR DRIVING." You would think they would jump on the fix before issuing the recall. Especially since it says it can happen while driving OR parked!

I saw somewhere online while looking up the recall there is still no ETA for the fix. This make Genesis look like a miickey mouse organization

I mean this in the kindest way possible -- WTH is your problem? Why would you respond to a complete stranger that way? You know nothing about me, my motivation for buying the car, or how I intend to manage it going forward. Nor do you need to. I never said I couldn't get warranty service, did I? Why should you care enough to insult a total stranger on a car forum? People come to forums looking for help, not know-it-all scolding from random a@@es.

Is anyone with a G80 non-Sport trim (e.g. 3.8 or 5.0) having the issue with the window trim discoloration?

The G80 Sport trim (3.3T and 3.8 Sport package) has "copper accents". This package includes a slightly darker window trim. I speculate the Sport trim has lacquer/varnish applied to the same non-sport trim to darken it. It's this coating wearing away/eating way that is causing the discoloration IMO.

I've had all of the window trim on my 2018 G80 Sport 3.3T replaced twice. I've tried to protect it with wax and cleaning, but seeing the issue again at 38K miles\3 years.

I may go back to the dealer and ask them to replace it with the non-Sport trim. I am assuming it will fit.
My other complication is I have installed the OEM window wind/rain guards, which would have to be removed/re-installed when the window trim is replaced. Based on feedback in this forum, dealers/manufacture is becoming more reluctant to replace this trim under warranty.

I have a 2018 G80 sport and almost all the coating is gone. It actually does not look so bad when all the coating is gone. I probably leave it the way it is because it seems they have not figured out how to make good window molding.

This weekend I used a medium clay bar on the worst discolored trim (driver door lip). After an hour of work it improved the look. It appears the clay bar removed the coating. It doesn't look that much lighter than the undamaged trim. It would be a huge amount of work/time consuming to do this on all of the window trim.

Interesting, the trim around the driver-side door of my car also looks the worst. The larger pieces of trim in the front and rear door look better because all the coating came off already. On the driver-side door trim, I see the little shiny spots, about 3 mm in diameter. It really surprises me that they have never made any better trim. It seems that they have used the same bad trim for at least 3 years in a row. I see some of the G80 sport trim for sale online and it was all made in 2017.
