I agree with doing your own mileage check, and I've always done so. The car tells me I'm getting 31.5 on hwy trips (similar to above poster, 65-80mph), but my own check tells me I'm getting 29.5-30mpg....which I'm happy with!
OK, so I just completed my 3rd GA to FL round trip (my folks live on the Gulf) since owning this car (2013 Base). The only difference this time, was that I had recently changed the intake air filter with a K&N, lifetime filter. The
previous, highest "car readout" was 31.5 mpg. This time? 33.5! In fact, after I stopped for fuel, I started thinking that my gas gauge function wasn't working. Why? Because the way I normally drive, I usually don't get past 35 miles or so before the first digital icon disappears on the fuel gauge. This time? It was 73 miles! And yes, I fully realize that the 2mpg difference doesn't jive with the doubling of actual miles here, but just wanted to share. I know......a lot of variables to consider.
I checked gas mileage three times during this trip (I actually got gas in AL for $2.169 per gallon) and I wish I could report that I checked it manually, but continued the drive and was somewhat "aggressive" in my last 100 miles or so (Lol, was passing a semi and we both had to brake hard as I was nose to nose with him...because a mother deer and her fawn crossed the highway at that very moment! Talk about bad timing?!).
And fwiw, I've already posted/argued in another thread about octane, and I did switch to 93 octane to see if there was a noticeable difference. There was not (to me), so I went back to what I've always found to be true; higher octane fuel is merely a wallet drainer. While superior "spec-wise", this doesn't necessarily equate to a "cost/efficiency" winner (yes, including long term use...because engine oil/cylinder cleaners are available to mitigate the superiority of higher octane, imo). And lastly, the Hyundai Turbo is specifically designed to run on "regular" gas, as well as, higher octane.....which is a
requirement in other brand's turbo engines.
Anyway, just wanted to share. And no, not trying to start a pissing contest (again, lol) about octane.....and not shilling for K&N! I mainly just wanted to share the difference in "car read-out" numbers on fuel consumption after switching to a non-OEM intake air filter.
