  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Connected Services is selling Driving behavior, Location & Speed data to insurance companies

Do what I did with my two Sonatas.
I called BlueLink and had them unsubscribe me. They did not want to do it. “But it’s FREE”. Told them I don’t care. I don’t want it. “But ITS FREE”. Told them that even if they pay me, I still don’t want it. After arguing with them for ten minutes or so, they finally unsubscribed me.
No BlueLink in my Sonatas.

Will do the same if/when I get another Genesis.

Cant say I understand your reasoning but it your business and I don’t want to try. Absolutely nothing on this forum surprises me anymore. 😊. Just wanted you to know that you could have cancelled the subscription right in the app (at least on the iPhone )

Has nothing to do with an app or smart phone. If you push that BlueLink button and BlueLink answers you, you are connected (have a subscription). If you get nothing when pushing those buttons, you are unsubscribes. You have to push the button or phone them to unsubscribe. At least that is how it was when I unsubscribed. Even though it was free After I got them to unsubscribe me, I pushed the Help and other buttons to make sure and they no longer connected.

If I have a breakdown on the road, I just phone their 1-800 phone line for help.

Not to get off subject, but just what does unsubscribing cost, in lost services? I understand that once unsubscribed you can't press the BlueLink button and talk to the person on the other end, and I won't be able to log into the Connected Services website and see how many miles are on my car. Big brother wouldn't know how I drive, either.

But would I lose the Remote Start function? It shouldn't affect Siriuns/XM radio, or HD Traffic, or Navigation - but would make the phone app pretty much useless.

What else would it affect?

AFAIK just as you mentioned. With navigation you have the POIs on the SD card but would lose the ability to press the button for Google to find things.

Yes you will lose remote start.
Yes it makes the phone app absolutely useless.
More specifically you lose
  • Automatic collision notification
  • Automatic diagnostic trouble code notification
  • Genesis intelligent assistant app
  • Enhanced roadside assistance
  • Maintenance alert
  • Monthly vehicle health report
  • On-demand diagnostics
  • Service link
  • SOS emergency assistance
  • Driving information report

  • Remote start w/ climate control
  • Car finder
  • Vehicle safeguard alerts app
  • Remote door unlock/lock
  • Remote horn & lights
  • Remote lights
  • Remote vehicle status
  • Stolen vehicle recovery
  • Stolen vehicle slowdown
  • Alarm notification

  • Destination search powered by google
  • Destination send-to-car by google

I'll keep it, for now... :)

My 2015 and 2018 do not lose SiriusXM, Traffic Link or built in Navigation and Maps. Works for me.

This is the way.

Unsubscribing completely disables the buttons, including the "SOS" button -- which like the other buttons are just pre-programmed "speed dials".
You can confirm by pressing the Genesis button, it will ring for a few tries and then Verizon will say call can't be processed, and you'll need to hang-up and dial *611 to speak to customer service.

The mobile app is a companion app, governed by the same T&C + Privacy Policy. The remote features, which is relying upon the cell-phone connectivity inside your car that's able to receive commands from Geneisis + send data automatically to Genesis will be disabled. This includes the remote start, the ability for Gensis to automatically start a phone call to Genesis after a crash, car slowdown, remote diagnostics etc.

All these are low value features, in my opinion, and they can only work if the car is able to speak to Genesis HQ.
Sirius/XM, HD Traffic etc run independent of the Connected Service and will remain uninterrupted.

media attention on similar topics on car manufacturers getting more data, although focused on OnStar:

non-paywalled version: https://archive.is/ixUsP

OnStar's trying to obfusciate what they're doing, whereas Hyundai/Genesis has it disclosed in plain-sight, if you read the T&C

Some of this is getting scary. Knowing where I go and when is one thing. Knowing who calls me, who I text, my personal contact list, photos, who knows what else brings up more serious privacy concerns. We all have passwords stored on our phones, banking info, apps to my 401k acct that if compromised by the car, the auto manufacturer or a hacker would create big time problems for us all. When I plug my phone in for CarPlay, what all is really being interagated or copied from my phone?

What happens if Apples cloud service gets hacked? Or AWS? Same thing as if Genesis connected service gets hacked. Best thing you can do is monitor, change passwords frequently and hope for the best. I’d love it if the DMVs stopped selling our information as well. This seems to be the times we live in unfortunately

Thank You.
You explained it better than me.

The same data that is sent when you use WiFi or cellular.

Sting70r, that article is telling. I'm really curious now just what my G80 is collecting and sending on.

Nothing to worry about the way your stock portfolio is going. BTW, the kids are really growing up since last we checked. Oh, can you move that box in back of your garage, it blocks the light to the camera.
Nope, nothing to worry about.

I believe you have an Android phone. Aren’t you more worried about the location and site data that google is collecting and what they are doing with it? Or is the Genesis data more of a curiosity. Even if Genesis collects it, does anyone know that they use it identifiably without your permission?

Right now it is a curiosity, this is all news to me since reading this thread. Just bought the car recently. I didn't realize my car was sending my "stuff" to other parties. Google has been tracking me since day one, I realize that - but I don't think they're sending my driving habits to an insurance data aggregator.

Wouldn’t surprise me if they were. They have that data.
