  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Apparently, this piston is hard enough to handle over 700 horsepower. Though it IS a little heavy at 342 grams...

I'm curious to know as well. How are the rods and crankshaft? I'm dying to know what the stock shortblock is capable of. 223 on premium gas is NOTHING these days...especially, if you consider, the MS3, NSRT-4, CSRT-4 and Cobalt SS. All of these cars are putting down quite a bit more. BUT, all would be forgiven if these babies could handle 400-500whp stock. The next question would be: what can the turbo handle?

The EVO X Pistons i hear are made by Mahle, who is a quality piston. So, if it's the same piston, i am sure it will be durable.

I really don't care who makes the piston. What I do care about is are they forged or cast. If they are not forged in a turbo motor, you are just asking for trouble. Detonation will absolutely kill any cast piston. I guess you can always hope the warranty covers it...but I wouldn't bet the house on it!

So Sti's were just asking for trouble then? Because the USDM ones didn't have forged pistons and there are a ton of people putting down good numbers on those

I have been building and racing 2.3 TurboFords for years. In a turbo car, detonation happens if you turn up the wick. While we all try to keep it a little rich and back the timing back to avoid this, it will eventually happen for one reason or another. Detonation will absolutely kill any cast or hypercracker pistons. Forged pistons are MUCH more resistant to breaking. To test this, take an old cast and forged piston and hit them with a hammer. The cast will tend to crack and the forged will absorb the impact. Detonation is basicly same thing.

That being said, the stock pistons in my heads/cam LS1 have taken many 150 shots without incident, but I also make sure it is rich and back the timing 6 degrees on the bottle. When I build a new motor it will absolutely have forged rods and pistons in it. It just doesn't make any since to skimp on short block parts.

they did have trouble subaru tried to save money and used a cheap piston IN AND ONLY THE 07 STIS, thats if you check with alot of sti owner (me) they drop in a 04-05 sti shortblock

Do Hyundai aluminum engines have cast iron cylinder sleeves and piston rings? Or is it all aluminum?

They may have used a cheap piston in 07 but no Sti came from the factory with a truly forged piston. They were hardened cast pistons through whatever process they use. Ask any competent Subaru engine builder about it

Actually I think the STI had problems with the ringlands.

I'm assuming the block design is semi-closed deck like evo X?
I can't see the picture at work :/

I can't wait either. There are a lot of opinions on the engine already. I guess it's ok that the first releases will be scooped up quickly and a lot of us will have to order the car we want.

Cast or not though, I'm glad I only plan on using the stock turbo.
