  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

3.3T Genesis G70 Oil and Filter change (how-to)

Looking to make your Genesis unique? Look no further than KDM Warehouse - where orders are shipped immediately!
If you live in the USA, then the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act makes it illegal for dealers/mfrs to deny warranty simply because you had your car serviced elsewhere other than their dealership.

If any of them ever give you any lip on this subject again, tell them to give that to you in writing on their company letterhead, and you'll have your uncles Magnuson and Moss look it over. I assure you their reactions will be well worth your effort.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Volfy, I actually do live in the USA and am aware of the Magnuson-Moss warranty thing. I appreciate you bringing that up. I was just wondering if there was any feedback from other Genesis owners that may have run into issues at their dealerships regarding them changing their own oil. I know that I never had an issue with my other vehicles, most of which being Toyota products. I will be using the stock OEM Genesis filters, purchased from that dealership, (not too much to ask of me I suppose), but will be using my choice of full synthetic engine oil that meets the minimum requirements. I'm one of those that will perform an oil/oil-filter change on a new vehicle at around 600 miles. Then, because of it being a turbo engine, because I drive the car in central Florida's extreme summer heat, the next change would be at 3,000 miles. Then every 3,000 miles after. I will document my service intervals. This allows the dealership to change the oil every other time. I am willing to provide the synthetic oil to them for my car.

We've already done our own oil changed 4 times in 12k miles. I happened to have found on Amazon a pack of 10 genuine Hyundai/Kia filters for $37. Otherwise, I would have no problem using aftermarket oil filter and have done so countless times in the past decades. There is nothing special about any OEM oil filters.

The law applies to ANY dealer of ANY brand. Genesis is no exception. They are certainly well within their rights to deny warranty under some circumstances, such as gross negligence on the owner's part. They can deny warranty if you flat out don't do your maintenance work or do them improperly; they just can't deny warranty if you don't let them do the maintenance work. Neither could they deny warranty simply because you cannot provide documentation of service work done. The law requires them to show sufficient proof that the damage done could be the direct result of owner negligence. For example, if you bring in a car with a seized engine, and they found lots of sludge build up inside your engine, or excessively low oil level... yeah they can tell you to take a hike.

That's a blatant lie. Even the Genesis website (under 'MyGenesis') has a section to post DIY maintenance, which I use. I would NEVER let a dealer touch my car for maintenance, especially the Hyundai/Genesis dealer, based on personal experience. So I paid in vain for the 'included maintenance', but I don't care:). I did the first at 1,724 miles, because I took it on a long trip with 400+ miles, which was too early to change it. But typically change it near 1K miles the first time, and 5K thereafter, with OEM filter (as always), and Mobil1 0/30 full synthetic oil. And of course let it drain for an hour, check and clean everything carefully, and put everything back together. I used Rhino ramps, and the bumper cleared them perfectly. Oh, and installed a GoldPlug magnetic drain plug, like always. About 3,800 miles at the moment. Wife said it was too cramped, so no more trips on the G. Oh well. It's just the city car now, like the Tesla was.

Thank you Volfy & ELP. I typically do as you guys suggest in your posts. I will then continue to do it my way then. Also, like ELP stated, "I would NEVER let a dealer touch my car for maintenance". I know of three horror stories in real life that occurred because of dealer maintenance, but was a bit freaked out by what my sales-person stated about my car not being covered by its warranty if I did the maintenance. He said it so adamantly.

Just so you know, ELP_JC has several of us here on ignore, which means he doesn't want to see what we wrote, neither can we see any of his replies. I personally don't care. However, because of this, I have found on several occasions, I ended up answering posts I later deduced was actually not directed at me - even though the order of replies made it seem that way. That gets annoying and can potentially confuse and offend, when none were intended.

Just thought I'd mention this, just so newly joined member are aware of it. Best way to prevent confusion is to expressly name the poster the reply is meant for, as you've done here (thanks).

You bring up a good point. It is easy to get confused on any forum. I hereby promise if I want to offend Volfy I will mention his name to avoid confusion.

Volfy, ELP, & EdP, I visited the service department and parts department today. I bought an oil filter for my car for my future oil change and spoke to one of the service guys. I asked about the "warranty thing" and my doing my own oil change. He said, If I felt better changing the oil and filter myself, then I should do it, but they would be happy to perform the maintenance. He also stated their mechanics actually do the oil changes and that I shouldn't worry about a person not being qualified in performing the maintenance, but he understands. He said my warranty would NOT be voided by me doing my oil changes, as long as I used quality filters and the correctly graded oil. By the way, the oil filter cost me exactly $13. with tax included.

My Genesis/Hyundai service person said that at his shop the Genesis trained technicians are reserved for warranty repair, and standard work such as OLF, tires, battery, rotation, and so on are done by anyone available and, in my opinion, the least experienced person since those are things that require the least knowledge to accomplish. I had a local shop I preferred and bought Genesis filters from dealer and delivered to my shop and they did the rest. Cost me some money but I know who did the work and trust them. A tiny investment in peace of mind.

Tarhoosier, yes, piece of mind is important.

Tarhoosier, peace of mind is very important. When in doubt, do something about it.

I beat my record for oil change time. 20 minutes and 30 seconds. Lay the tools and oil out. Take both covers off - take off filter and cover, drain it, new filter back in, drain plug off, back in, put the covers on, fill it up.

I also put around 20 minutes of labor too, including cleaning everything around nicely... but let the old oil drain for an hour or so in-between. I lay a MD cardboard box unfolded on my clean (and painted) garage floor, so don't even get dirty. I actually enjoy doing maintenance:).

Nice! I bet it can save at least 5 more mins if you install a drain valve.

I bet that if i leave my drain plug out or leave my engine disassembled, I can save a whole 20 minutes.

LOL!
You can also save all the time and save time from buying gas and oil if you get an electric.

What Gold Plug model did you get? On their website there is no Genesis, I have used the Elantra 2.0 and got this part number (MP-02 MP02)

Is this the correct one?

I'm looking on the bright side, no possibility of makeup sex. :giggle:

Yep, we have M14x1.5 threads, in case you want to search for a cheaper one. But for me, the GP (no affiliation) is the best. And MP-02 is correct.
