  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis G70 Reviews

Consumer Reports does not have advertisers and sponsors to please, so I trust their opinion over anyone else's. I'm glad the 4 cylinder performed so well that some of them actually preferred it over the 6. This really finalized my decision to buy.
Also, they will be purchasing two new models after release for CR long-term, comprehensive testing program.

He also said the G70 is not a new model, but with a new engine this year. Seems like he thinks the G70 is of the same origin as G80 and G90 (designed by Hyundai, but sold as a Genesis), but actually the G70 was designed new for 2018 (in Korea) as the first design from scratch Genesis branded car (after first hiring some German designer talent!).

The G90 was just as new to Genesis as is the G70; the difference being that the G70 didn't have a progenitor model under Hyundai.

The G70, tho, isn't the first model to get the Genesis design from scratch - as it more closely resembles the other current Genesis models.

The 1st model to get the distinct Genesis design will be either the new G80 or the GV80 (tho, from the looks of it, seems like we'll likely see the new G80 hit the lots before the GV80).

I understand what you're saying but I think a lot of people (and clearly, Car & Driver) put coupes in the same category as compact sedans with limited rear seat legroom. I know I do.

Well, going to disagree w/ you and C/D.

2-door coupe drivers tend to be a different market buyer than 4-door sedan buyers and if they are including 4-door fastbacks, might as well have included the estate/wagon body-style where applicable.

And from there, how much different is the estate/wagon from the CUV variant(s)?

Anyway, the point is that one could basically count the coupe and sedan as one model.

If the G70 came in 3-4 different body-styles, kinda ridiculous to have it take 3-4 different spots and so on down the line.

Read their reviews with care as they have their own bias. They have downgraded appliances for features that I though was the best reason to buy them.

Well I hoped I didn't speak out of turn, but I guess I did. Admittedly I don't know much about the G80 and G90, but my understanding was that they were part of the Hyundai luxury line of cars that were once called Hyundai Genesis and then they morphed into the Genesis brand. Designers were said to be from the Korean design team.

Along comes the G70 and I had read somewhere that implied it was designed from scratch as a new model (unlike the other G80, G90 cars) and that Luc Donckerwolke (previous Audi designer) had some influence in the G70 design. Closer reading says the G70 design was already conceptualized before Luc joined the team and he didn't change anything because he thought they got it right. Granted the G70 does have some resemblance to the G80 and G90 (grill shape), but I thought that was intentional to blend the new model into the previous designs.

So are you saying that the guy in the video is correct in his statements (9:10 to 9:50) "This design is not quite new" and that the G70 had a previous model before the Genesis brand came out? Thinking about how the G70 will look a few years down the road and looking back at the 2019 model, it may look dated quicker if this one is not "the new design language". The new SUV's will look very different it seems (just took a peek a the latest GV80 design concept); gone is the six-point grill. Thanks for clarifying this @YEH as I'd hate to spread mis-information.

^ No biggie - as pretty much this whole thing has been quite messy.

Genesis sees the G90 as its first model. While there was the (Hyundai) Equus before it, the G90 was never sold as a Hyundai.

The current G80, however, for several years was sold as the 2G (Hyundai) Genesis before it got the switch in both brand and nameplate (really don't see why this or the other is a big deal when the LS 400 was sold in Japan as the Toyota Celsior and Infinitis are still sold in Japan as Nissans or even as a rebadged Mitsu).

But many (in particular, the automotive press) sees the G70 as the first Genesis model, since it didn't have a predecessor sold as a Hyundai.

But in terms of design language - the G70 is pretty much in the same boat as the G80 and G90 w/ the biggest differentiation being at the interior.

The new Essentia/GV80 based design language is the 1st real Genesis design language to fully separate itself from the vestiges of Hyundai (which is the reason why they really tried to differentiate the grille from Hyundai's hexagonal grille shape).

So, in terms of a Genesis model that is full-on Genesis (getting the full Genesis treatment), it'll be the new G80 or the GV80 - the G90 is still the 1st Genesis model, but it'll be getting the Genesis treatment for its facelift (likewise, the G70 will undergo similar changes for its facelift).

The G70's design had already been frozen before the Essentia/GV80 concepts (which are the template for Genesis designs going forward) or even something like the New York concept; and like I had stated, is essentially in the same design family as the G80 and G90 as can be seen in the commonality of the grille shape/design.

So when the new G80, GV80, GV70, the refreshed G90 and other models hit the lots, the G70 will be the odd man out in terms of design until it undergoes its facelift (which is similar to what Lincoln had undergone in switching to its Continental-based design language - having models on the lots w/ disparate design languages).

So basically everything before the GV80 and facelifted G80 was designed by Hyundai related engineers, and everything with those onward was designed with the influence of the new European designers. Even if it's more conventional, I prefer the current G80 Sport and G70 exterior design language. I just don't like the line headlights the Essentia and GV80 have, in my opinion.

Partially correct. The G70 was designed by ex-M Division peep (chassis, etc) and interior by ex Bugatti peep. Few other European folks too...I think.

The G70 is the first car as a Genesis brand. G80 and G90 are carried over (new names and some design changes, etc).

My review after a 24-hour test drive. Please note I am not a pro driver nor a pro reviewer. Cars I have owned are M3, S4, M5, G37 Coupe, various others, etc.

I have already mentioned that I had an encounter with a new C43 AMG off a stop light and that I beat him out. Turned into a big fiasco. I also mentioned that I pulled over with the guy at a Home Depot afterwards and chit chatted. He tried...I tried...it was fair...I beat him. Throw magazines at me...I don't care...is what it is...I was there...you were not. I will also repeat that per manufacturer...the MB is 4.6 and the G70 is 4.5. Don't waste your time with trivial magazine clippings or quotes...b/c the G70 was a bogus test IMHO since it was using crap gas and and high heat, etc, etc.

Next...I used to own an E92 M3...dual-clutch. Rated at 4.4. The non-DC was rated at 4.7. My friend actually purchased the car from me. We met up...had multiple runs together in a few undisclosed areas in Burlington :) Neck and neck...every time. Again...spare me magazine details. He is a good driver...as am I. No stick shifting...so it is mash the pedal and go. Not rocket science.

With all that out of the way. This car is FAST. It is fast and it keeps being fast. I cannot even fathom it with a piggyback. But...this is not all about off the line speed.

This stuff is off the top of my head...my first impressions, etc. It has been several days now...so I might miss some stuff.

Pros...

- the exterior is stunning. No photos do it justice. Every crease...every line...walking around and inspecting the angles and curves. It is gorgeous man. I got nothing but looks...driving or sitting. Dropped my mom off so she could get some stuff...and I had 2 peeps literally tap on my glass and start talking with me. Loved it.
- the interior is stuffning. Ha. Seriously...so well crafted...everything is aligned. The stainless steel everywhere...the knobs...everything. Love the way the door handle is flat finish...then the surround is brushed...then the surround below that is brushed again. Someone said they screwed up or something...but it was intentional and a brilliant detail.
- the leather is of the best quality. Feels like a high end leather sofa. I kept touching it to remind myself how awesome it is. No other car I have sat in has had leather like this...S4/M3...not talking $100k+ cars here. Perhaps the same...who knows.
- comfort is fantastic...the front side of the cabin is just perfect. More on the back below. The center console has that slight angle to the driver...great feeling. Dials are simple, etc...all that has been reviewed. Screen is awesome. No glare...nice matte finish...very responsive, blah, blah.
- sound system rocks. I couldn't even get it to half volume...started to sound like a night club. Brilliant. I have a B&O system in my A4 now and it is just as good if not better.
- electronics...it has it all...holy crap. Played a bit with lane departure, etc...works...fun. All is easy to get to, etc, etc. One thing that was not mentioned is that it has a system that learns how you drive. If it starts to sense that lane departure is kicking in more...or other "odd" stuff is happening that is not normal to you...it assumes you are drunk or passing out...or both. LOL. So it brings up a coffee icon...essentially to tell you that you need a break, etc. BUT...it ALSO pumps oxygen into the cabin to help wake you up !!! C'mon now...who else does that?!?!?!
- trunk is good size. Smaller than my A4...but not by much. Golf clubs fit...4 carry-ons fit, blah, blah.
- if you walk up to the trunk with your key in your pocket, etc...and stand there for a few seconds...rear lights blip and then the trunk opens automatically. It assumes you are standing there and need trunk access. Very slick. No it doesn't close automatically with a button. Lift some weights...get back some of that muscle (if you ever had any) and just close it with one quick pull with your hand. Sheesh.
- love the alcantara head liner. I had that in my S4 (including the seats) so I am very used to it. Great thing is...cleans up great.
- it drives amazing...just like everyone else says. Love they way you can switch the drive modes, etc. I kept it in Sport the whole time essentially...other than to show my wife and my mom how it can ride more gentle :)
- wife loved it...mom loved it...daughter demands I buy it.
- feel free to ask me specific questions if I missed anything

Cons...

- back seats are comfy...leg room SUCKS. Did not think it would be this bad. I have one child that would ever sit behind the passenger...so not worried about it. But...I am 6'1" and with the driver seat where I like it...I could not get in the back. Literally...I could not get in. Once I wedged in...my legs were spread eagle. I can sit comfortably behind myself in my A4. I moved the driver seat up to where I was still comfortable...but not preferable...and I was able to get in. I was comfortable...but feet would not fit under the seat. Even barefoot. Yeah I could lift the driver seat, etc, etc. They really f'd up on the back seat room leg-wise. All they needed is 2-3 more inches somehow, etc.
- So used to the center console operation hub like in the BMW's and Audi's. Love being able to do stuff without looking. But I can get used to it since everything is so nicely laid out and the screen is nice and responsive.
- outside entry. Hate I have to touch the button to unlock. Should just touch the handle. Pressing to lock is ok.
- the darkened chrome is very slick looking. But...since the handles have that as well...they get fingerprints crazy fast. Annoying. But...looks good !!!
- dumb-ass music when the car shuts off, etc. What tard thought of that one?!?!?! Wish it could be silenced. My wife's comment..."now that is pretty gay". Nuff said.
- wish the headrests were adjustable other than up and down.
- wish there was some modern ambient LED lighting...anything...even a tiny bit. No biggie though.
- wish people would stop looking at me. Nah...just kidding...felt f'ing fantastic !!
- feel free to ask me specific questions if I missed anything

That's all for now. If I think of anything else I will simply reply to myself, etc.

Hope this was helpful for someone...anyone.

I will end with this. There is NOT ONE SINGLE car that can touch this thing for the price point. Nothing. It performs...feels like a million bucks...they killed it with this one.

I will 100% hold out for it. Unless...it goes really wrong and is released in 2019 or something. I simply cannot wait that long.

Cheers...B.

Awesome sleuth work Beefer... you're the hero of this forum

You can turn the greeting music off in the settings.

How was the tire/wind/engine noise in the cabin, Beefer? And how was the ride over rough roads and bumps/potholes?

Thanks for your lengthy feedback!

Quiet...very quiet. I ended up opening the windows since I wanted to hear the exhaust, etc.

Sport = all rough. But I love it. The way it should be.
Comfort = completely dampens. My 74 year old mom commented on how soft the ride was.

Tell ya what...I would HATE to nick those rims. I will stay 10' from any curb or pothole.

Congrats! Agreed on the speed of the car -- it's legitimately fast compared to other cars in the class. I have the most fun carving corners because this car just begs you to push it harder and harder!

I must say, there seems to be a lot of new members here most with less than 10-15 posts. This is good and bad news for Genesis as it seems that the word is starting to get out. Good news because people are finding out about the car; bad news because it isn't released yet and now the C&D article and other printed articles will just bring attention to the fact that they have bungled the release all up and down Main street....

Genesis needs to get this thing out now that word is starting to become more publicly known or risk getting bad attention about the dealership issues.

Looks like no G70N in the works.

https://www.carscoops.com/2018/08/hyundai-n-boss-says-no-genesis-g70-n/

"That wasn’t the only idea he [Biermann] shot down as the engineer seemed to rule out a Genesis G70 N. The company looked into the possibility of developing the model before Genesis became a standalone brand, but it appears that is now out of the question. That’s unfortunate as it would be interesting to see Genesis tackle the BMW M3. "
@PD705, is there a warmer version (not necessarily N variant) of the G70 coming out?
