Genesis Re-badging: The Movie!

This video made this job easy and gave me the encouragement to do it myself. It was pretty easy and took about 1.5 hours to install both badges and wheel covers. They look great.

Very well done video! In December I used fishing line and did not use a hair dryer so I broke the "H" as it came off. You covered everything on your video!

I just put the "Genesis" trunk badge on my 460 and it was realtively easy. Thanks for the movie but I made a couple of changes based on other comments. I tried the Glide dental floss first, but it broke way to easily. I did get each end started though and then used a plastic putty knife to get the H badge off. I was not careful and broke it in several pieces, but no big deal.

The major problem was that in doing it that way, there was a LOT of adhesive left on the trunk! I used half a bottle of Goo Gone but it was still a battle and I scraped some of the big gobs of glue off with the putty knife. I don't see any scratches on the paint but there are probably some slight surface ones due to the putty knife.

I know you apologized for the sound on your tape, but I have a hearing problem and couldn't understand more than half of what you were saying. I wish I had asked what type of wire you used to get your badge off and it would probably been easier. I did it but it probably took longer than you but the new badge looks great. Plastic coated craft wire is probably the best choice; but strong fishing line works well also.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I've never been one to "do it myself" with my cars - I mean, even seemingly simple things like changing oil - or bulbs even! But your very clear (and at times entertaining) how-to video showed me I could do it myself - and I just did! It went even quicker than 15 minutes, the hair dryer is indispensable, and I used fishing line and kite line - it was a breeze, and my GEN's ass looks so damn good!

Thank you again - I'm extremely appreciative you took the time to make and post your video - you ROCK, dude!

I started out with dental floss, but switched to a 3-4" plastic putty knife (with hair dryer) that you can get at any hardware or discount store for about a $1.00. Make sure you pick one that is thin and smooth on at least one side.

Actually I found that using a plastic cake knife was perfect. I did not need to use a blow dryer and the plastic cake knife sliced through the goo with no problems at all.

A great video to get an amateur like me comfortable to tackle this. While I missed the cake knife reference, I just grabbed a clean plastic spatula from the kitchen, and with one hand on the spatula and the other on the hair dryer, I was able to work my way around the "H" and pry it off quite easily in perhaps 10 minutes. I suggest using your fingers to "roll" and/or pluck as much of the excess glue off once you get the H off, because Goo Gone is really not good at thick glue, so you need to get it down to a thinner glue film before the Goo Gone gets the final bit.

My first post! I've been surfing this site for a few months, and I finally took the plunge and drove home a 2010 V8 Genesis, Black Noir Pearl with cashmere on Sunday, 11/1. Fair price. So far, I am impressed with the car. It replaced a 2002 BMW 525i. I had already ordered the rear trunk lid wing badge, and I took advice from some of the posts on this forum - and changed it myself. Looks great, IMHO. Quick question for anyone - I used a hair dryer, an old plastic store card and pried off the "H", used goo gone, cleaned with soap and water and attached the wing emblem. In certain light, I noticed that I may have scratched the clear coat where the circle H was - is it possible to buff it out to the original finish? Or am I a major bonehead? (Please don't ask my wife - she's known me too long)

Just chiming in on my experience -

Hairdryer; 12lb fishing line; goo gone and no issues popping off the wheel caps with the end of the tool in the spare tire kit.

FYI - I had a lot of glue remianing after I got the stock H off - be sure to continue using the hairdryer on the remaining glue - helps soften it up more and makes getting most of it off easier - after that it's time for goo gone and some patience

I just completed my assembly - Trunk lid, caps and steering wheel. I can't thank you enough for that video. It gave me the confidence to do this on my own and it worked beautifully. The only thing I did different was try the fishing line first. I used 10 lb. test and it worked great. Didn't break and cut right through the glue.

Car looks great and thanks again for making it easy for a hack like me to get this done right in my own garage.

Not sure why, but your comment made me do it!

Bought the 17" wheel cover set + hood and trunk badges for $44.89 shipped, about an hour ago. Still not certain they'll fit the 19's. If not, someone on here will get a great deal on them, no doubt.

I'll keep them in a cool, dust-free place until they can be joined by the 5.0

That's ridiculous - have you seen how many wing car logos are out there? It's like trying to copyright the number "1"

just bought one yesterday, excellent video.

might i add one thing. by using denatured alcohol as opposed to the multi-surface cleaner and goo-gone you can eliminate the two step process at the end after removing the physical emblem. the denatured alcohol works awesome. it will not damge the paint it will remove all adhesives, even smaller chunk pieces you would think you need to pick off, waxes and evaporates instantly.

i also would suggest you ONLY use fishing line or some type of plastic coated string (or floss) like the op as anything else will leave fine scratches requiring additional compounding for no reason. things i have found out the hard way over 22 years of removing emblems from my cars/trucks.

and remember without a hairdryer or heat gun you will be picking adhesive chunks off for an hour unless the car is in the sun.
