Genesis Wing Emblem Installation Process

Here's the results of my rear emblem installation.

I used a blow dryer (hot setting) for a minute or two.

I used Glide dental tape.

I got the H to loosen a bit and found it easier to pry the H emblem up and to CAREFULLY use an exacto knife and just cut the foam between the emblem and the trunk. Once I got that loose enough the H just pulled off. I used my fingernail to scrape remaining big portions of adhesive/foam, and then used GooGone to remove residue. I then used iso-alcohol to clean the GooGone so trunk lid around the holes was clean clean clean. As I'd already mistakenly removed the mounting tabs on the Genesis emblem, I used a bit weatherstrip adhesive to 'plug the holes, and then peeled off the 3M backing, and pressed the emblem to the trunk lid for about a minute, applying pressue to the inner and outer part of the wings to get a good fit.

here are the results:

What's with all these comments about cutting of the posts of the rear trunk emblem because the posts are too big for the holes. I just took off my lazy H emblem and dry fitted the wing emblem and it's a perfect fit. My 2009 V8 has an oval hole and round hole and my emblem had the exact same. Guess I got lucky.

They are probably putting the front emblem on the rear by mistake.

I'm new to the forum. Had 2010 sedan (bought new with full wing upgrade). Just purchased 2011 model and about to order the wing emblems to install myself. As far as cleaning the residual adhesive after removing any emblem or dealer sticker (or any sticker from anything); 3M Adhesive Remover is great. However, nothing will safely AND EASILY remove the remaining adhesive better plain old WD-40. Not to mention, tar, tree sap, and to a lesser degree bugs. I've tried all the other products, they pale in comparison with WD. I then simply clean off the WD-40 with Fantastic or aerosol window cleaner.
WD-40 is the bomb to EASILY remove road tar - small specks or big globs. Best part is it easily washes away with mild soap and dosen't harm your car's finish.

I use Gunk citris Engine Cleaner and it may work a little better than wd 40 but I agree wd40 works well.

Thanks so much for putting these instructions in! Just finished putting wings on my 2012 Genny and they look GREAT! Washed and waxed it first. Then used a hair dryer on high for about 2 minutes on the flying H., the dental floss on the left and right sidea of the emblem (the dental floss broke a few times but still worked OK) then I cut through the top and bottom adhesive with an old Borders Reward card (won't be needin' THAT any more :). I carefully worked the card all around and also in the center then carefully pried the H off without breaking it. I took off most of the remaining adhesive with my thumb (I don't have much nail on it) the cleaned it all off with Goo Gone, which worked great to clean it up. Dried it off thoroughly with a soft cloth, then heated it up just a bit with the hair dryer. Trunk emblem pegs fit exactly in the holes. Pressed for.about 30 seconds...done! Took about 15 minutes for the trunk wing replacement.

For the front wings, I used my Dremel to grind off the circular posts on the back, masking tape to mark correct position (about 1 inch up from the top of the grille and centered). A hint on masking tape - before putting it on the car, dab the sticky side of the tape on your forehead - it will pick up some of the oils from your skin and make it easier to remove from the car when done. I cut pieces of 3M car moulding double back tape to cover the ground off posts and presto! Wings!

Steering wheel wings emblem goes directly over the Flying H with no need to do anything other than take off the protective plastic and the tape backing.

A post script: Drove up to Waldorf MD today and as I was coming back to my Genny in the mall parking lot, I notice the guy walking in front of me is just eyeballin' it and drooling...looking right at the emblem on the front. When he sees me unlock it, I get a big thumbs' up and "Man, that is one sweet ride!" Yep, I gotta agree with the dude! :D Wing emblems are definitely worth it - very distinctive. I'll be doing wheel centers as soon as SFR (Seoul-ful Racing) sends me the durn caps...dunno what's holding them up.

I have the wheel center covers, trunk and hood winged emblems on the way and it just happens that I had a Genesis pull up next to me today that had the winged emblems. I thought it a bit odd to see the Genesis name on the winged trunk logo and then to see the Genesis name 12" away on the lower right of the trunk lid. Has anyone tried removing the word "Genesis"? Is it just held on with adhesive or are there mounting holes underneath?

I am thinking of having just the winged logo in the center top of my trunk lid with the small word Genesis and the 4.6 in the lower right.

There is only adhesive on the Genesis letters; no tab holes in the trunk lid.

I purchased my first Genesis sedan off the dealer showroom with the wing kit already installed. As soon I could get the car home. I removed the Genesis letters, the dealer's name and logo, etc. from the trunk lid, and the dealer's license plate frame. The only thing remaining was the license plate and winged emblem.

If your asking for opinions, take the 4.6 off also and don't put a cheesy plate frame on either. This truly the best look; nice and clean.

I bought a 2011 sedan last month and haven't yet gotten a winged emblem. If I'd not had the wings on the hood of the other car, I'm sure I'd want them like the rest of you. Truth is, they add little to the appearance. I'll probably just go with the wing emblem for the trunk on this Genesis.

Yep. The dealer name & logo and their license plate frame were the first to go. I don't like driving around with free advertising in two places on the back of my car.

I'd like to remove the Genesis lettering on the right side of the trunk. Am I correct in understanding that there are no posts/holes securing the lettering, and that it can be removed using heat and fishing line, similar to removing the "flying H" emblem on the trunk? Thanks - Bob Burgess

That is correct.

Did ever get you wheel center from SFR? I ended up in a dispute with them and had to use paypal claim service. SFR claimed he sent them twice but I never received them. After almost 6 weeks he did refund me only after a dispute and claim with paypal. Check out the vendor threads on this site. I would not recommend them at all. Just my opinion..:)

If you use the double sided tape you can pull the emblem off and redo it. If you use emblem adhesive and screw up, you'll have a mess on your hands.

This is a really simple thing to do. A little trick to make certain you put it on straight is to place a piece of masking tape on the car as a guide. For example, you can hold the winded emblem where you want it (without sticking it to the car), and then place a 12" piece of masking tap along the top of the wings. Now, you can simply remove backing from the double sided tape and place the tip of the wings at the edge of the masking tape. Remove the masking tape and you're done!

This way you know that the emblem will be perfectly level. You can even use a pen on the masking tape to mark the center of the trunk.

I love this site! I was just about to inquire about how to remove the Hyundai emblems so I could install wing and here it is already answered. Thank to everybody who participates on this site you all are doing a great job.::D

The dental floss was working very slow for me so I got a plastic scraper and the logo came off with just a couple minutes work. Just remember to thoroughly clean the area before you start. The dental floss or plastic scraper will not scratch the paint but any dirt will.

Just replaced the 4 wheel badges and trunk lid badge. What a great look and major difference. Waiting for steering wheel badge to arrive.

Removed ridiculously large dealer sticker and license plate frame. Unless they pay me to be a traveling billboard.....

Last Hyundai identification that is visible is the sticker on window; that is next:D

Thanks for all the tips. I bought a sticker, emblem, vinyl remover at an auto parts store and between using that and dental floss it was an easy chore.

Simonwpb,

Don't use emblem adhesive! I was an automotive refinish technician for years and worked for PPG, DuPont, and Sikkens automotive paints.

Emblem glue will mess up the finish on the car. Use the double sided tape that is designed for emblems and moldings. You can't mess up the factory finish with tape. The emblem adhesive will really cause you problems if you decide to take the emblems off one day.

I just removed my H emblem and am having one helluva time getting the emblem adhesive off. Any tips. Thanks.

The best thing to use is wax & grease remover. You can also use mineral spirits.

Folks,

Please don't be offended by me adding this information for a second time.

THERE IS NOTHING BETTER TO GET ADHESIVE BACKING OFF AUTO PAINT THAN PLAIN OLD WD-40. Nothing else compares.

Additionally, my goodness, we're not building a space shuttle here. Put your car in the sun, pry up the edge of old "H" with the edge of a credit card and yank it off. I take dealer emblems off every car I buy and have never used heat guns, blow dryers, floss, fishing "wire" (as you call it) or anything else. Just get the edge up and pull it off! WD - 40 and a terry cloth rag. Maybe two minutes - tops!

I know you mean well. But come on. Hey. I'm the first one to put on safety glasses and ear plugs to run power equipment or drill a tiny pilot hole before I put a screw in a piece of wood. Bottom line is I'm baffeled by all these steps. Do you get out a measuring tape to place the biscuits one inch apart on the baking pan?

For those of you who insist on using the blower dryer, there is a warning in the owners manual that warns you not to use while sleeping or or while bathing. So be sure to put your blow dryer in a safe place before going to bed. Perhaps in the vault with your heat gun, floss, fishing "wire", GooGone, Goof Off, DeSolve It, mineral spirts, rubbing alcohol, two sided tape, and whatever else in the world you think you need to pull off a label.
