  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

GV70 2.5 rear end noise

Picked the gv70 up with the new rear diff. After 10 mins, this new one is worse then the original. This now howls really loud, like really loud while accelerating, coasting and decelerating. At all speeds. Original one made noise only when feathering the gas.
Taking it back tomorrow, we waited 5 weeks for this one to get here. Not happy at all.
OMG, they didn't even take it for a test drive, obviously! How is it possible to provide such an amazingly poor level of service? I'm definitely concerned that Genesis has no idea how to support and service these vehicles!

I am so sorry you're having all these difficulties! I've been there and it is so frustrating! We are all with you in hoping this gets fixed permanently and soon!

Very sorry to hear. I'm hoping my drain and refill with new fluid that replaced the nasty black stuff that came out at 3300 miles. Keep in mind I never had any noticeable howl sound. This was only identified when troubleshooting a bad driveshaft 400 miles after the transfer case replacement. 400 miles or so on it since and seems quiet. Only time will tell. Best of luck.

They did drive it. It got worse the longer it was driven. It took a little before it started making noise.
After deeper looking, the diff is still very hot to the touch after sitting for 5 hours. Also the fill bolt which is painted black doesn’t look like a socket ever touched it.
I have a suspicion that the mechanic never put fluid in it. I’m going to make them open the fill hole while I’m there to see if my hunch is correct. By hot I mean after five hours it’s too hot to keep your hand in it for more than a couple seconds. Everything else, exhaust , transmission and so on are all cooled down to cold temps. But the diff is still very very hot.

Wow...that would be a huge screw up if they didn't add fluid! Yeah, I guess that would cause some problems if it's still that hot after 5 hours!! I take it this is being done at a local Hyundai service centre?

Correct. We do not have a genesis only dealer anywhere near here.

Unbelievable…!! Hope this gets resolved soon for you. Keep us posted please.
I have mine diff on order, kinda a scary they made it worse… I drive 2.5

Just dropped the GV70 off at the dealership, I mentioned the hot temps off the diff after sitting for 4-5 hours. The service manager said the diffs come complete with fluid installed already, so he didnt think that is the issue. I will keep you all updated.
What makes this even worse is my Audi A6 has been in the body shop for 2 weeks as well getting a little damage fixed from someone backing into me.

new update, the dealer agrees the new diff is bad, they are working with Genesis, but genesis wants to have about 300-400 miles put on the new diff to look for metal shavings or damage (they feel the 15 miles on the new diff isnt enough to show internal issues). Of course i am not pleased they are having a driver put the miles on it tomorrow (they want to do it incase something breaks for insurance reasons) after that they can determine "what" the issue is, and then that will bump us up the list for receiving another new diff.

That sucks, sorry for you

Oh wow, what a freaking mess that is… I don’t understand their logic, what are they thinking? That after 400 miles it magically fixes itself? I mean if part is broken, then it’s broken…. Obviously it’s not performing the right way..
Hope they sort it out for you.

their claim (Genesis) is that we have only driven it for 15 miles so far and any possible damage, be it a bearing or whatever isnt showing "damage" yet, so the added miles should ruin it enough to show damage. Im not super cool with this because a rear diff locking up or shredding itself will destroy other drivetrain items. I told them I think the insanely loud howling (which they acknowledge) should be enough info for them to realize the new diff is bad as well. I dont blame Genesis, every manufacturer has issues, but this is not a good start as a first time Genesis owner. We have always driven Audi and BMW and regardless of the stigma of high cost repairs with those brands, in almost 40 years of driving them, I have never had an issue as big as this. Both Audi and BMW have always immediately resolved any issues for us, this seems a little over the top. So in our first 3 months of ownership, we have lost 5-6 weeks of driving due to the first diff being defective, now we will more than likely be 5-6 more weeks without the Genesis again, and thats expecting the 3rd diff will actually be a good one. We were set on an Audi Q5 up to the day Genesis called to tell us our GV70 we put our name on finally came in. Also hearing the dealer admit the differentials are a major problem Genesis is having with the GV70 isnt making me feel anymore at ease.

Tell them that you will not be a test mule for them nor risk your family's safety to test a failing part to ultimate failure. Genesis should replace the diff and they can test the old one until it fails under their testing protocols. Escalate this. Sounds more like we don't have anything to give you so just keep driving this one.

They had a driver drive the vehicle for the 300 miles, not us. It made the journey but when they drained the fluid, it had metal shavings in it, so now that gets sent to Genesis. This was to help push us up the list of getting a new one, it changes our status to having a drivable car until the part comes to our status now, which is vehicle is not drivable and that status will bump us up the list to receive a new one.
Total pain, on top of it, my Audi A6 has been in the body shop for 2 weeks for a minor bump. We are stalled on that vehicle waiting for a headlight.

When it rains it pours…
Keep us posted when new one gets installed.
Mine diff is on back order, dealer tells me there is none available…

Ahh, that makes more sense.

Mine is starting to make a slight sounds when just maintaining speed on the highway which goes away when letting off the gas. Just developed after 4400 miles a tranfer case and driveshaft replacement they also drained the nasty burn looking fluid and refilled with new oil. Wondering what the fluid looks like with 1000 miles on it

Curious if anyone is having this and if we should take it in.
Our gv70 is 2 months old with 2k miles currently. We have noticed if you are barely touching the gas pedal to Maintain a steady mph there is a very slight whine from the rear end. Once you give it slightly more gas it goes away. Same happens when letting off the gas, if you ready to brake and slowly let off the gas at the moment of neither acceleration or coasting the whine appears again until you either give more gas or take your foot off the gas pedal completely.
I have read the gv80 is having this issue and it’s the rear diff.
Thoughts? Or is anyone having this issue? We have the 2.5
Have them check diff oil and demand answers why after 3k miles it would look like this attached pic.

I've noticed a very subtle whine on certain roads.... I'll keep it in the back of my mind, but I'm sure its nothing.... I've heard worse from other vehicles.... I only have 1100 miles... We will see...
I have more of an issue with the paint and black chrome constantly getting water marks.... We were not real pleased with the detailing the dealer did when we picked up the car.... Hopefully a light clay and ceramic coating will resolve that....

Same here, between 80-90 km /h on the highway and only if I slightly press the acceleration to maintain a steady speed . Over 90km it goes away . The best part I started the car (cold start) one day and a loud knocking noise was present , got me worried. Same thing the next day I recorded audio and video , went to the dealer and apparently it’s normal !!! And they mentioned a video is not representative to point out there’s an issue and as far as they are concerned all is good. 😀 . Unfortunately the service after sale is quite dismissive… and I also have a rattling noise at low speed. Twice in service and same answer all the time , cannot reproduce the noise. One morning I jumped in the car , drove to the dealer , took for a test drive the manager from service and he confirmed the noise … what do you know so I am not crazy cause that’s the attitude I was getting from the reps when calling and complaining. Will bring the car back this Friday, will see, but unfortunately for me I became a detractor and I will never recommend for someone to buy Genesis , since they have a hard time understanding that a luxury brand comes with service after sale …
