Hankook tire recall

I recently had the P18 recall done where they replaced my Hankook tires with Michelin Primacy MXM4 tires. I immediately noticed a rougher ride where I felt more of the road. Has anyone else noticed this? I contacted Hyundai and am waiting for a response.

It was not a recall, it was an optional tire swap for those that complained about flat spotting and a firm ride. Many have said the Hankook's were a better tire, regardless of short term flat spotting. I had them keep them on my car and will change when these give up or the swap is ending. I have zero issues with the Hankook's.

it's a service campaign...not a recall! check your tires air pressure. the service bay guys tend to put too much pressure in the tires. that said i do agree that the michelins have a bit busier ride vs the hankooks. however i think the michelins are quieter riding.

I think dealers are treating the tire swap as a recall regardless of what you really call it. I certainly wasn't given any choice and only afterwards discovered that it was voluntary and at my convenience. If I had known, I would definitely have kept the Hankooks. I think the noise level is higher with the Michelins, but the ride is about the same, maybe a little better. The Flatspotting on my car is definitely much worse with the Michelins - far worse than the Hankooks.

Yea, I was forced to swapped them by the dealer. New Michelin tire are horrible (this is my opinion). I contacted Hyundai and they told me to get them replaced with whatever I wanted and they would reimburse me, which they did because I received the check last night.

Regardless of what they put on your invoice/service order, it is NOT an actual recall. I got letter from Hyundai stating it was optional - but recommended. If I go into Blue Link to schedule service, it comes up as a recommended service (Deferred Service or Manufacturer Alerts). Your dealer did you wrong by telling you it was mandatory - I've had mine back to the dealer many times and they've asked if I want them replaced. However, I jut always decline as I'm perfectly happy with the Hankooks for now.

My dealer told me I had to change them because it was a recall. 1 call to Hyundai Canada cleared that up pretty quick. It is voluntary "campaign", Officially "service campaign P18-1", you do not need to do this, in fact you have 3 years to wear them out and then get a new set of Michelins/Continentals if you so desire. Unless the car has some bad vibration, why would you chuck a good set of rubber? Makes absolutely no sense. Keep the Hankooks for 3 years and then get new rubber for free. Has to worth a minimum of $1000.

Dealers are there to make money on servicing your car. Replacing the tires gets them money. Sure they will say it is mandatory, bunch of freaking liars!

Most of TSB#15-01-P18-1 is posted in another thread but here's the part specifically addressed to the "ATTN: Dealer Principal/General Manager/Service Manager/Parts Manager":
"As previously announced, Hyundai has launched the P18 Select Car Care program to replace the factory installed tires on certain 2015 Model Year Genesis Sedan vehicles equipped with 18” or 19” Hankook brand tires. These tires may exhibit a slight vibration and/or road noise in certain road conditions. Hyundai will replace the original factory installed 18” or 19” Hankook with specified factory approved replacement tires at the customer’s convenience and with their agreement."--my emphasis.

If the tires were replaced without your permission (while you owned the car), raise a stink to get a set of Hankooks re-installed but live with any flat spotting or vibrations that may result...

That may be tough if they already drilled holes in them as required. They would then need to take them off a car on the lot since the tires are no loner available.

Yes, the original tires are drilled by the dealer but that doesn't mean new Hankooks couldn't be ordered by Hyundai if the dealer didn't have the customers OK to switch the tires.

Interesting that for all of the complaints on Hankooks from some and the suggestion that they are low quality, Pep Boys items - The 2017 A4 appears to be riding on Hankook Ventus S1 evo 2's (see tire shot at 1:01 in attached).

What did you replace them with?

I replace them with Continental ExtremeContact DW. They are way better than the Michelin but they are Summer only. To me it does not matter because I have a set of winter wheels.

Thank you, that is helpful. After seeing CR report on all season tires compared to winter I will be getting winter tires as well.

this is easy. i see this as a huge perk. its like buying a car with a set of free tires on top of your existing tires.

thats like getting 800 to 900 bux for free because you will need to change your tires in 3 years anyways.

Agreed, but what a lot of people are complaining about (including me) is that the Option of having the tires changed within 3-Years, was never presented to us. The change was done during a regular service visit and the information I was given was that it was mandated by Hyundai Canada. They never used the word recall, but that was certainly the inference. Had I known I had 3 years to make the change, I would have kept the original Hankooks (with less than 6000 kilometres) until the belts were showing.
