  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I was advised by my dealership (Canada) this morning that the voluntary tire swap is now a safety recall.

Apparently, flatspotting is not the only issue and now they've added sidewall splitting. Letters are supposed to be going out within the month to all owners of vehicles built up to January 2015 (but don't quote me on those dates).

I found this out because I was in a dispute with my dealership over having to have the tires swapped since they had gone ahead and ordered new ones without advising me and were now threatening to return the tires and cancel the order.

Take it for what it's worth.

In the US, "official" recalls are done in association with the NHTSA (as US government agency). How does that work in Canada?

Hyundai also has done mandatory service campaigns in the US, that do not rise to the level of an official recall. Mandatory means that if the car is in the shop for any reason, or in inventory, the service must be done. For official recalls, the owner must be notified by mail.

A dealer is well......a dealer. I suggest you call Hyundai Canada yourself and get it from the horses mouth. This is what I did after my dealer told me it was mandatory and I made him eat crow. :D If this was a full blown recall, the USA and Asia would have been informed long ago as we Canadians usually tend to get the news a little later, just like the tire swap.

I will of course be confirming this but I have to say, since I previously warned the service manager that I would contacting HyCan over this matter, it would incredibly ballsy (and stupid) to then outright lie to me about it now being a mandatory safety recall. As well, he told me to wait for the recall notification before bringing the car in. Seems legit.

I still call BS. They are highly rated and available at tire rack. Your dealer mentions safety issues which would halt all exterior sales of this tire. Make the call Monday and fill us in, takes only a few minutes to set this straight. ;)

Hankook is headquartered in Korea, and makes tires at various sites around the world. It could be there was a problem with the Korean (or Chinese) made tires, while the ones made in US are OK. The OEM tires are probably made in (or close to) Korea where the Genesis is assembled.

NHTSA has issued the notice of recall for Hankook tires. Campaign ID # 15T024.

Here's the NHTSA link with the recall info...

Couldn't get the link to work. Post from Focusin shows the info.

so, this gets interesting! will the hyundai dealership swap out your old hankooks (given the michelin tire swap service campaign) for new ones, or would you have to go to a hankook tire dealer to get the new ones??

So the truth finally comes out! There was more to the voluntary replacement campaign than initially revealed.

As with most in the snow belt regions, your tires are probably off the car and stored elsewhere for the winter season. Good way of getting a free tire swap/balancing in spring by having them remove your winters and replacing with the new tires come spring. They will still need to set a deadline for this mandatory tire replacement. Personally I will go as long as I can with the Hankooks as I love them. ;)

No such luck for V8 owners, they don't make that size anymore. Likely going to have to go to the Continentals.

Appears from the posted docs that Hankook is offering a replacement Hankook tire to all effected tire owners. They will pay the dealer $28 a tire for handling and labor. How this effects the Hyundai offer for different tires will be interesting....need to see if they have a replacement for the V8 size since I last checked.

Good find ksoze as I would much rather replace them with Hancooks.

Strange thing is the reason for this recall is different: the voluntary campaign was about ride comfort issues/vibration while this actual recall is about potential tire failure and loss of vehicle control.

If Hyundai knew that sidewall cracks that could lead to tire failure was the issue, there is no way the original replacement campaign would have been voluntary: the potential liability would be too big, so why would Hyundai want to assume risk that was really a Hankook issue? That would make no sense!

I see this as a separate issue - it may be related and something that evolved over time, but I don't believe the risk of tire failure was the root cause of the original voluntary replacement campaign.

Trying to make sense of the "M Code" to determine the tires eligibility. The range says "BEGIN 2013" and "END 0715". Mine say "2714". Logically, I am out of range if the numbers decline as it appears they do. The Hankook U.S. site does not yet show the recall.

I agree with Niken.. In a world of sue happy people there is no way a Company would take on the risk of this biting them in the end. Hyundai responded to the initial complaints about flat spotting and ride quality issues... I hope that hankook will offer a similar tire to the ventus as I prefer it over the michelins.

For the V8 the only tire that pops up on the Hankook site for those sizes is the Ventus V12 evo2. Is is a max performance summer tire, so would not be a great winter weather tire, but gets pretty good reviews.

That will work for me here in South Florida

Guess I should've read completely lol. So this only applies to the 19's on the V8 model.. I have the V6 so I guess I am stuck with getting the michelins at some point
