  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hankooks now a safety recall.

Guess I should've read completely lol. So this only applies to the 19's on the V8 model.. I have the V6 so I guess I am stuck with getting the michelins at some point

No, it effects the 245/45R18 96W also. I was specifically referring to the V8 model in my posts.

Strange thing is the reason for this recall is different: the voluntary campaign was about ride comfort issues/vibration while this actual recall is about potential tire failure and loss of vehicle control.

If Hyundai knew that sidewall cracks that could lead to tire failure was the issue, there is no way the original replacement campaign would have been voluntary: the potential liability would be too big, so why would Hyundai want to assume risk that was really a Hankook issue? That would make no sense!

I see this as a separate issue - it may be related and something that evolved over time, but I don't believe the risk of tire failure was the root cause of the original voluntary replacement campaign.

So it did evolve AFTER the original issue and is a new and potentially more serious concern. From the new recall report on the NHTSA site:

"Chronology :
In March of 2015, Hyundai Motor America initiated a service campaign to address customer feedback regarding vibration and/or road noise. The campaign directed Hyundai dealers to replace the vehicle's factory equipped Hankook tires with either Continental or Michelin brand tires depending on the tire sizes. Hankook received tire with sidewall crack on October 21, 2015.

Hankook started initial quality investigation on October 22~28, 2015. From October 29, 2015 through December 7 advanced quality investigation launched to discover occurrence of sidewall crack determined the tire may experience premature sidewall crack on the inside equipped area under certain severe service conditions.

On December 15, 2015, in abundance of caution, Hyundai and Hankook made the determination to proceed with a safety recall"

V6 is impacted too. But Hyundai will manage these recalls for both the V6 and V8 Genesis, so not likely to be able to get alternate Hankook replacements - i suspect they'll stick with the Michelins and Continentals (on Hankook's dime). From the recall report:

"Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : For replacement market tires, Hankook Tire America Corporation ("HTAC sales subsidiary of Hankook) plans to pay for the expense of the tire replacement . For Original equipment tires sent to Hyundai Motor Company,
Hyundai will conduct a separate recall of the tires.

Trying to make sense of the "M Code" to determine the tires eligibility. The range says "BEGIN 2013" and "END 0715". Mine say "2714". Logically, I am out of range if the numbers decline as it appears they do. The Hankook U.S. site does not yet show the recall.

The "M code" solved: It is the DOT Week. So the start date "2013" was the 20th week of 2013 and the end date "0715" was the 7th week of 2015. So my "2714" falls in that range as the 27th week of 2014.

Looks like this puts the kibosh on the 3 year wait to replace strategy.

I hope that Hyundai isn't required to stick with the Michelins for the V6 modesl. The Michelins are not comparable to the Hankooks as the Michelins appear to be a lower performance type and lower speed rating. In my opinion the only acceptable replacement for the Hankooks should be comparably rated tires (performance type, speed, treadwear, traction, temperature, load, etc.). And that's what I'll try to get when I receive my recall letter.

The tires on my V6 do fall within the parameters of the faulty tires.

Size code: EF
Optional Code: 1AH
M Code: 0215

No kidding! When they put the Michelins on they also reprogram the car to drop top speed to accommodate the speed rating of the new tire.

So glad I have the 5.0...:D

Because.....?

He didn't have to get his car reprogrammed to reduce the top speed to match a lesser tire. It does seem odd that Hyundai couldn't find a comparable tire to the Hankook to avoid the need to do that?

The date code is the week number followed by the year number (wwyy). So, all tires ending in 14 are recalled.

And some ending in 13 and 15. According to this link posted in post #13 http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs/jaxrs/download/doc/UCM494725/RCMN-15T024-8656.pdf Any tire from the 20th week of 2013 up to the 7th week of 2015 is recalled which basically cover every Genesis Gen2 up until they were delivered from Korea with different tires.

That being said, the letter is addressed to tire vendors who will replace the tires with whatever the customer wants as long as it does not cost him more obviously. The dealer is also credited $28/tire which I assume will cover his expense.

Our dealer is Hyundai and basically THEY have determined that we will get Michelins for the V6 and Continentals for the V8. I do not think you can get around this freebee no matter how hard you try.

If it is a Hankook recall why can't you just go to a tire dealer that sells them and get them replaced with whatever you like? A decent tire dealer should be happy for the business and a chance to make a happy lifetime customer.

Like was detailed several posts ago.

why hyundai ever put W speed rated tires on the v6 genesis is a mystery in itself to me. The car isn't able to go that fast anyway. Even if the car were ungoverned, i doubt you could reach the V rating! Now the v8 on the other hand...

I just went to the stealership this weekend. they told me it was still optional to have the tires swapped

i just called hankook and they said i have to go to the dealer and that I can replace with any tire of my choice but would have to pay the difference if the tire cost more. Does anybody have an experience with the new recall and picking my own tires. seems like some people think the michelin's are worse.
