  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hankooks now a safety recall.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
i just called hankook and they said i have to go to the dealer and that I can replace with any tire of my choice but would have to pay the difference if the tire cost more.

That would be awesome if true! The first question I would have then is what are they saying the cost of the Hankook's are?

I'm still skeptical but time will tell.

When I called the girl told me it was $150 but I'm not sure she knew what she was talking about.

Does anybody have an experience with the new recall and picking my own tires. seems like some people think the michelin's are worse.

Seriously doubt this - not that Hankook didn't tell you that, just they don't understand it is an OE tire.

Hyundai dealers get compensated for the service labor to install the specfic replacement new tire sent, which is provided to them as part of the campaign. The dealers don't male money on the tire as far as I know - it is a replacement campaign (the docs detailing the dealers role are here). How they then buy you a different tire and charge you only the difference while only getting paid for the install labor makes it tough to see how this can work.

Yeah. I don't have much confidence in customer service and knowledge these days. I do think that the dealers do not know that this is now a recall as they let me keep my tires this weekend when I took it in for service. I wonder if there will be any other options now that the recall is coming from hankook and not a voluntary hyundai request

When I called Hankook customer support they cross referenced the DOT tire number to the recall and that's how they determined if it is covered, it being an OE or retail didn't seem to matter. So it seems that it depends who you want to fulfill the recall, Hyundai or Hankook, that will determine how the replacements are done.

I then asked if my local tire shop could do the work and they went down a list and confirmed that they were authorized to do the work. I'll need to call them back to verify the process and reimbursement amounts but the big thing that I'm wondering about now is how long I should wait to do the replacements. The Hankooks are good tires (other than the 5 mile flat spot issue) and I'd kinda like to ride em like I stole em before I turn them in.

keep us updated on what they say. at this point I feel dumb not swapping them this weekend as it is now a saftey issue. I'm going to swap them when I find out the answer about doing it at a local tire place instead of getting the michelins

Until someone actually gets this done by a tire shop and able to switch tire brand/type from the Hyundai selected choices, it is unfounded. A call to a customer service rep who likely reads from a list of FAQ's is unfortunately probably not much of a source on this issue. Would love to believe it, but think not.

Looking at picking up a v8 genesis this week, the one I am looking at was manufactured in aug of 2014, and still has the hankooks on it. Should i make them swap out before i take delivery? or should I drive for free with the ones on it?

Do you like gambling with your safety (and that of others you share the road with) now that we know the tires have a defect that could cause failure? Seems like a bad idea given that recall is now mandatory.

I was thinking i could get a burnout or 2 on the old ones in before literally burning rubber i have to pay for.

Has anyone received a recall letter from Hyundai yet?

I am still riding on mine. It's a personal choice. I will look more into the recall details and it may make me upgrade sooner than running them treadless. I also want to see the effect of Hankook now being more involved and if it is possible to switch to a different tire than being offered by Hyundai (however unlikely).

I am looking at switching to the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3, if possible. I have had these before on other cars and like them. What does everyone else thing of these tires?

I will let you know if I am successful swapping for these tires.

My best friend happens to own a tire shop so I will ask him the question. Now that this is no longer a Hyundai campaign and has become a full blown recall from the manufacturer, I would think Hankook would need to replace with whatever they allow through an independent dealer. The cavet may be the tires need to be exchanged from where they were purchased.

I'm not so sure. The tires on our car are OE tires and Hyundai likely will handle that replacement as detailed. We didn't pay retail for the tires unlike a non-OE consumer. I also am interested in having an option for tires, but believe the Hyundai plan will supercede an plan for those who bought those tires retail

Yup - lots of wishful thinking here, it seems. The recall notice says that Hyundai will handle the OEM recall - see this post:

I assumed that this was a safety issue from the get-go.

The lawyers are hard at work . . .

I would presume that Hyundai was notified early on before the public which triggered their free tire swap making them look like angels, all the while knowning that Hankook would be footing the bill. :D
