Hankooks now a safety recall.

So I just had my first experience with Discount Tire. Went there after reading someone had their OEM Hankooks replaced under the recall. Best tire shop I have ever dealt with. Here's the low down. Replaced with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3's.(wanted the super sports but they are not available) OTD cost was $276.08 and I did get the $70.00 rebate from DT/Michelin. $206.08 for 4 new sneakers not bad IMO.

I wish we had Discount Tire in Northern Virginia. I went to my local Hankook dealer (NTB) this morning to see about getting the recalled Hankooks replaced. They wouldn't do it. They said they called Hankook and Hankook told them it had to be handled by the Hyundai dealer.

When I got home, I called the Hankook customer service number listed in the recall notice and was told that it had to be handled by Hyundai.

I had talked to my Hyundai dealer last month about the recall and replacement tires for the recalled tires. They told me to call Hyundai customer service about it.

I just got off the line with a Hyundai Premier customer service agent who was very understanding and patient concerning my concerns about the Michelin tires not being comparable to the Hankooks, but said that Hyundai couldn't tell their dealers what to do. (Hmmm...I think that's inconsistent (really wanted to use a stronger adjective, but I'm trying to be polite) with the way things operate as Hyundai certainly told the dealers to replace the Hankooks with the Michelins. Basically, Hyundai America says it's between me and the dealer, and to contact the dealer (which I did originally) and then it's up to the dealer as to what happens (Remember the dealer referred me to Hyundai Customer Service earlier).

Of course, I got a case number and a commitment by the CS rep to escalate it and that I will hear back within five to seven business days.

I'm thinking this is already turning into a (somewhat polite term) goat rope.

The whole recall thing seems to be at the discretion of the tire dealers or the car dealers, not the responsible corporations. I don't think that's the way NHTSA safety recalls are supposed to be handled.

I hear you NVABob. I also called Hankook and was told the dealer had to handle it. Called the dealer and they said they would swap with Michelins however the prices they quoted were almost $100 more per tire than DT. I decided to make the 40 mile trip to DT on lobsenza's prior post about DT. Glad I did. Good luck!!

Bob I’m not really sure what your concerns are with respect to the Michelin tires installed by the dealer are. Speaking from experience with those tires I had them on my prior car a G353X and they proved to be fantastic tires in the rain and snow. I had no qualms about having them installed on my Genesis when I learned they were the ones offered. With comparison with the Hankooks I can give you this observation of the Hankooks again from experience while they have a “slight” edge on dry ground they defiantly take back seat to the Michelins in rain or snow and are not what I would consider a true “All weather tire” as such. I’ve had them in snow and rain as I had them as original equipment on my Genesis. If the thought of being reduced in top speed to 130mph is a concern for you then I think it’s a concern to everybody else you feel that way. I’ve been very satisfied with the replacement Michelins they are quiet, smooth riding, and offer very good traction in bad weather as they did on my G35X.

The Conti's being supplied by Hyundai as the replacement for the V8 are actually more expensive than the Michelin PS A/S 3's by over $200 a set. Should be getting a $200 rebate if picking the "lesser" tire

I have some experience with the MXM4 tires as I got them when I replaced the tires on my 2011 MKZ and it turned out that I was not happy with the noise or the performance of them in the wet, dry, and especially light snow.

Furthermore, the MXM4 tires have a lower rating than the Hankooks in other areas than the speed rating.

- The Hankooks have a load rating of 1,764 lbs, the MXM4 rating is 1,565 lbs.

- The Hankooks have a UTQG of 500 AA A, the MXM4s are 500 A A.

- The Hankooks can withstand pressures up to 50 psi, the MXM4s only 44 psi (not that I inflate my tires that much, but it may be an indicator of less probable failure in the event of running at higher temperatures due to prolonged travel and high road temperatures).

I'm not asking for a free swap, I'm willing to pay the difference between the full refund for the Hankooks and the price of the Continental DWS06 tires I prefer. Hyundai's use of the Continental tires on the 2G V8s indicate they already have some arrangement/relationship with Continental that maybe could be leveraged for a lower price (for Hyundai) for Continental tires for the 2G V6s.

I was not unhappy with the Hankooks until I got a large nail in the RR. rather than replacing one tire and paying for it, and my other tires have over 8000 miles on them, I swapped for the Michelins. I would say they are a little smoother snd I don't notice any handling difference yet. Question I have is the Hankooks called for 33psi all around cold. IS IT THE SAME FOR THE MICHELINS??? Dealer put in 36 cold. I would think the Michelins would be even smoother with 33 instead of 36. Which is proper?

33 psi - per the mfr tag on the door opening. Manufacturer of the tire does not change the Hyundai reco for the same size tires.

I went to my local AutoServ in Charles Town, WV and told them about the Hankook recall and I didn't like the potential Hyundai Michelin Primacy MXM4 replacement tires (2015 Genesis V6). Based on TireRack ratings/reviews, I told the AutoServ rep I wanted to get Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 tires for replacements. He did some checking with Hankook and got approval along with a $149.80 per tire allowance and $28.00 per tire for balance and installation. AutoServ charged me $149.80 per Continental, so my out-of-pocket cost (before taxes) was $17.70 per tire.

The AutoServ rep recommended a less expensive Continental PureContact tire but I couldn't any independent comparison ratings for it and went with the DWS 06. Now if a get a hurricane strength tail wind, the tires are good for 186mph...

Ride is smoother, and road grooves and bumps seem smoother. I did drive in some heavy rain with no problems at all. I will add they do look better on the car if that matters. Overall for $200 I couldn't be happier at this point.

That's an improvement over the 96Ws that came on my / our G2 Hankooks......Sounds like your A/S 3s are making you happy.....can I ask if you gave any thought to the Pirelli P7 s?

With my limited driving time on my new Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 tires, I don't think I would recommend them to anyone. They handle very well but whereas I experienced only slight flat spotting and vibration with the Hankooks (not very noticeable), these tires are much, much worse for flat spotting and vibration (extremely noticeable) until they warm up in a mile or two.

I'm retired and don't have a reason to drive everyday, plus the extreme flat spotting and vibration is more noticeable on the colder days. When the temp is above freezing, it's hardly noticeable, especially if I wasn't looking for it. But when the temp is in the 20's (F) or lower, it's very noticeable.

Anyone else have any experience with these tires in cold weather climates?

Since the point of replacing my original Hankooks was to get rid of flat spotting and vibration (and the recall) which was hardly noticeable on my car, replacing the Hankooks with a tire that is worse with flat spotting and vibration doesn't seem like a very great choice IMHO. However, thanks for telling me about the 30 day period with the Continentals because I will be calling them.
