If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I just picked my Gennie from the shop today. The dealer replaced the head unit because of strange and unpredictable operation of anything relating to the stereo, navigation, bluetooth phone or voice recognition. The funny thing is that the replacement (re-built) unit exhibits exactly the same symptoms as the original one. My first thought was that the unit was not really replaced but I guess it was because the XM id# has changed.

Here is one of the many problems: Press voice button on steering wheel and nothing happens or after a delay the voice says “please wait”, followed by another delay and finally a “ding”. If I respond to the “ding” with a voice command, it repeats the command (like it should) and then the whole systems locks up. There is no response at all when I move the DIS controller, push any button around the controller, press any button on the steering wheel, or press the on/off knob on the dash. Sometimes audio and functions return after a few minutes but most times the only cure is to shut off the engine and re-boot.

I experienced other strange problems like the unit would randomly change disks, make a phone call, or perform a function different than the one the voice control had just confirmed. Sometimes when I asked it to “call home”, it would do something unexpected like play a cd or just lock up. I have been pulling of the road a lot to try to end calls I never wanted to be made.

The dealer doesn’t know that the solution will be but they are asking for a new (not re-furbished) head unit. In the meantime, the only thing I can do is drive my Gennie without use of any of the Tech Package options.

Anyone else see problems like these? What was the final outcome?

Sorry to hear about the problems. I had my Head unit replaced for Bluetooth issues and have had no issues. How long have you had the car before the issues?

I had similar issues and contrary to logic the dealer replaced the amplifier, not the head unit; all has been well for 3+ months.

Good luck, I know how frustrating it can be.

Thanks for the sympathy. The car was fine for the first 13 months. It all happened about one month ago, after the dealer had it for one week to fix the brake lights (they finally said that problem was a diode on the wiring harness). It is funny that the replacement head unit has the same problems as the first one. I hope the dealer didn't screw up something else when they fixed the brake light wiring.

I'll give the dealer another try if they get the new head unit on Monday and then I'll show them your post. Thanks for the response.

Are these all cars with the navigation head unit system?

I didn't chime in on this subject until now, but mine has had the head unit replaced, and I have a V-8 tech, so I have the NAV package.

For this reason alone I bought an aftermarket bumper to bumper 10/100K warranty that does include the tuner, head unit, and NAV components. If I had to pay the head unit replacement unit bill it would have been $4200 plus labor and I just want the peace of mind about not having to worry about it. Some people think this is crazy, but I know what I bought and that I have the coverage I paid for. I'm surprised so many people are having head unit problems, but I'll be the first to admit that since mine has been replaced I have had no problems with it.

I had the same issues, and as mentioned by Eurog, the dealer replaced my amplifier as well.

I have had no issues for the last 6 months.

I had the car for one month and today my genesis decided that want's to take a vacantion,so for that reason it frozed everything up.I was talking on the phone at that time and i couldn't even hang up because eveything was frozed.i got home ,pulled the WHITE BEAST in the garage an after one hour i went down to see if she is more relaxed.i gave it a start and here she was ready to roll, everything was back to normal.i hope that will b her last vacantion for a whille because if not it's going on EBAY :)))

i have another post on this site about my problems with my head unit which was basically about the blue tooth not working on my 4.6 v8, to make a long story short they had to replace my head unit with a new one which was sometime around april or may on 2009. Now my problem is when i start the car the Genesis name & badge will appear than dissappear & keep coming on and going off for some time with no response from the head unit at all ( no music & nothing else working) & it will keep coming on & going off for about a good 10 minutes then it will all of a sudden start playing my music & the screen with the warning message will appear. Now this doesnt happen all the time but its happening about 2 to 3 times a month & its very annoying, VERY. Has anyone else have this problem if so please let me know, if this persist i will be contacting Hyundai corp & opening up a case file like i did when my headunit bluetooth was acting up.

I'm having these exact problems - plus my XM radio is losing it's authorization every time I start the car (I have to have a signal resent to the radio). Dealer replaced my radio today (they claim) but no dice. I'll ask them about the amplifier tomorrow (since they seem to be out of ideas).

Same frustrating story:

In mid-January, my entire DIS locked-up when I attempted to use the bluetooth to make a phone call. Drove straight to the dealer, got a loaner, and waited. Service department diagnosed it as a bad amplifier, and placed an order. I had to leave twon for a week, so I was stuck with a car and no reliable radio/XM/Nav/bluetooth - major disapointment for a brand new $40K car.

When the amp arrived, the dealer called to tell me that they'd received the wrong amp. They ordered the correct amp, it arrived about a week later - this time the dealer said the replacement amp was also bad. Ordered a new amp, waited another week - and the amp wasn't the problem after all. This time, they suspect the head unit. Problem is the head unit is on back order, and the dealer does not expect one to arrive until mid-late April. By then, I will have been without the radio for over 4 months, and more than half the time I've owned the car.

I met with the Dealer's GM yesterday. He was pleasant and appologetic, but the bottomline for his is that this isn't his problem. He's not willing to buy the car back, and he's not willing to intercede with Hyundai on my behalf. He did offer to call the Regional Parts and Service manager and see if they'd expedite the new head.

I'll post an update if I ever get resolution.

Same frustrating story:
I have a base model V8. Had head unit replaced, worked for a while but then AM/FM went out, but XM and CD worked. I just got the "key pad" replaced. Seems to be working for now. I'm glad it's not anything mechanical, but yeah, it annoying cause they have to order the parts cause the car is so new, they're not readily available and obviously it takes a while, because I'm sure they're not the one's who make any of the radio components.

The dealer is just guessing and throwing parts at it. The chances of a replacment head unit causing the same exact problem as the old one is slim. I've found this problem a few times and it was a bad amp both times. The tech should call Hyundai Tech Line they have an extention just for genesis problems And if it is anything common they will know the fix. The most likely thing to cause this kind of problem is a failure in the MM-CAN system. This could be a short or high resistance in the harness or a problem with the CAN portion of the Amp, Head unit, or DIS controller. If the modules can't talk to each other they just freeze.

Anyone with a problem like this and a dealer that is dragging there feet should call Hyundai Consumer Affairs. They will talk to the dealer and light a fire under there ***. I have had problems getting parts and Consumer affairs got the District Manager to make us pull a part off of a new car on the lot to repair a customers car so they don't have to wait months for parts.

My primary issue with my head unit is that my Bluetooth echoes after a certain amount of time. I'm able to replicate it on any phone. Thing is, it ONLY happens when I make a call. When I receive a call, it works perfectly.

As Hytech said, I called the Genesis team (apparently part of Consumer Affairs), and they did hustle my dealer. I talked to my local region consumer affairs guy, and he said they'll be sending the regional tech over to check the car out. I've had 2 NPF's before for this issue, we'll see how it is resolved.

"MM-CAN"
Can you explain what this is?
My problem started as poor AM radio reception. They plugged in a new amp, but that didn't do anything (i'm assuming they plugged back old amp).
Then the head unit was replaced (part 0021-G9001-FLT)and it was all good. Then the am/FM radio stations wouldn't come on at all, but the XM and CD worked. The AV Keyboard assy was replaced Part - 9611-3M150-GV. The next morning the whole thing froze. So at a red light I turned off car and restarted, and it was all good. It's worked fine since then. Any thoughts?

MM-CAN = "Multi Media Controller Area Network" basicly it's a two wire network that links all the Multi media modules.

The Tuner is built into the Amp not the head unit. XM and CD are in the head unit. so if you are having AM/FM problems there is a 99% chance it is in the Amp. I am downloading the tech training for this system and will post it when it's done.

I have the base model V8 which has the mid level lexicon system. I know there was a TSB for this. Should I have the dealer replace the amp as a preventative measure? I don't wanna deal with this down the road, I know the warranty for radio is only 3 year 36k miles.

I wouldn't do it unless it is acting up. The AMP and speakers are 5 years 50,000 miles. only the head unit is 3/36

I saw your signature about the ten kinds of people in the world, I assume your were referring to the 1's and 0's since that's the only kind that can mate. I can determine that from their shape, and it's a good thing because they can count to really big numbers without need anything but more 1's and 0's and there are only boys and girls so it all works out. :D :D
