Actually, before Daewoo Motors got bankrupt and sold to GM, and before they made that dreadful LeMans(that hurt Pontiac's image bad imo), they were doing fine in Korea. Started by importing the Opel Rekord from Europe, modifying them, and re-engineering them and sold them in Korea, buying the Saehan motors and their single model, the Maepsy, even buying the ailing Ssangyong motors on a whole only to have it sold to the Chinese company when Daewoo got bust. Daewoo was considerred Korea's semi-luxury car maker, ahead of Hyundai, well, imo, and ahead of then, seperate company Kia, which was the oldest Korean car manufacturer that started in 1944, some 20 years or so ahead of Hyundai. It's when the Daewoo president took the money and ran(I think that's what happened). From this time on, the Daewoo cars/trucks started falling down. No-one considers the ill-fated LeMans(which was actually a Korean made, rebadge of the Opel Kadett), Lanos, Nubira, or Leganza as a good car. They were as crap as Hyundai was in the mid to late 90's.

Well, as an old saying, you HAVE TO start from somewhere, Chinese cars, well, not all of them, are simply a crap now, since they are not really that experienced as Japanese, let alone, Korean, but give them time, and you will be surpriced how fast they can catch up. It took the Japanese what, 20 years(or is it 30 years) to put them where they are now, and it took Koreans about 10 years(or is it 20 years) to get it right, but who knows, the Chinese may cut that even shorter. The man-power in China is just incredible. Billions of population can really make things work. I think, both Japan and Korea should be ready for them, they ARE comming.

I'm not positive you can give the Chinese credit for this one. Apple rules with an iron fist. I'm certain they go above and beyond to make certain their Chinese vendors produce the quality demanded by Apple.

Hyundai developed a crappy reputation with cheap cars 20 years ago. Chinese start out with a clean slate. if they don't screw up with lead paint and keep taking advantage of all these foreign firms tripping over themselves to invest in China they will have quality wholegoods for our market in less than 5 years.

I have posted about this number of times, but in my opinion, if the car is being sold under Hyundai and their flying H logo, it is a proven fact that the sales will go down half of what it will sell if it goes sold under different brand.
Well, my 2 cents.

Would you mind please citing your source for this "fact."
 
Hyundai's biggest problem in the US is brand image. Auto reviews tend to read "it's an awesome car and great value at any price, but..."

Do you think the Genesis sedan and coupe will significantly change the perception of Hyundai in the US, or of Korean made products in general? Do you expect a paradigm shift in brand perception or do the Germans and Japanese really have nothing to worry about?

It still surprises me that the Koreans have been high-tech leaders for quite a while but they're still shy with their "Made in Korea" label.
 
I agree.

If you sort through all the doom and gloom in the National news lately, did you notice that the commentaries about the US auto makers (at least) on NBC have continually used "pressure from Japan and South Korea" as one of the threats to the US producers.

As Hyundai is now #5 world wide producer, it is a bit strange that they don't jump on the PR bandwagon!

I've been talking to my wife about checking out a genesis coupe, and she says the typical, "it's a hyundai though". So yea, the image is gonna hurt it.

Tell your wife General Motors and Chrysler may not be around to honor their warranty. You didn't mention Ford but they are about to go off the cliff too.

All three of these companies have been trying to go bankrupt for as long as I can remember. It now looks like one or all three may soon succeed.

I actually don't know how financially fit Hyundai is but they do have a better warranty than any car that I am aware of.
 
Hyundai is into an awful lot of things from cars to heavy equipment, to shipping, to containers (remember seeing the trailers with the Hyundai logo?). Unlike the US automakers who are autos only (except Chrysler who is owned by a holding company) , Hyundai is a very diverse company.

That said, it is kinda crazy that a lot of us have had a V8 Genesis' on order for 3+ months now, and still can't seem to get one, while GM/Ford/Chrysler can't seem to give their cars away lately. And it isn't just SUV's and mileage issues, since Hyundai has their share of SUVs, and, until recently, they weren't all that great on mileage either.

They have been very responsive to the market, however, and that ability to change quickly (well, in car terms, anyway) seems to be helping them immensely.

I've had two so far, and they have been very good automobiles. When you factor in price/competition, they edge near great automobiles . . .
 
I didn't mention ford because I refuse to buy/drive one. That's just my personal opinion.

As for the wife, she doesn't make up my mind, so if I do in fact like the genesis coupe, I may be driving one. haha.

Very typical of those who don't know anything about cars (just like people who know nothing about stereo equipment and just think of Sony or Bose).

Kind of like the person who would pick the Chevy Aveo over the Accent simply b/c the Aveo is a "Chevy" (nevermind that it is manufactured in Korea and is simply a rebadged Daewoo).

The people who are looking w/ interest at Hyundai/Kia's latest and forthcoming offering (Genesis, 2009 Sonata, Elantra Touring, Forte, Koup, Soul, etc.) tend to be those who are much more knowledgeable about cars and the auto industry).
 
Pretty simple the car sale itself..... if you want to pay thousands of dollars for a badge that's your problem.... Put the most discriminating driver in any of those cars without them knowing the badge.... Let'em drive that V8, and they'd tell you.... it's a lot of car for the money!!! No one hear should feel the need to justify the Genesis!! It dominates the 550 BMW, Acura TL, Lexus ES 350, and Infiniti M45 in a side by side comparison (Bigger, Faster,& Stronger ) on Edmunds.com., see for yourself. Love that Lexicon too! ! ! !
 
When I first heard about this car, I wondered, who would buy it. Then once I saw it and sat in it I realized that it was me they were targeting.

Newbie here...

I felt the same way as SWill. I'm your BMW 3 & 5 series type. I expect great service with a great car...But I also expect good value for my money. I can say that their advertising $$$'s worked with sparking my curiosity in the Genesis. All it took was one test drive for me to be converted to the Genesis Family. That being said I feel a good chunk of individuals like me could be converted quite easily if all they had was a test drive.

Of course there will always be haters and people self-conscious about their brand image. They will never change, but I'm confident that there are hundreds of thousands that could get converted if given the chance to drive it! ...But I feel it will be the youth that has forgotten the Pony who will be the drivers of this brand.

And Yes, I am old enough to remember the Pony. I almost bought one! At the tender age of sixteen it was cheap (Not to be confused with inexpensive)!

I think I can say it... Wait for it!... I DRIVE A HYUNDAI GENESIS AND I'M PROUD!
