If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Do we need the cable from the dealer to charge the phone? I only ask because the factory cable from apple seems to work but charges very slowly.

Get a cigarette lighter/power port adapter plug with a Female USB plug.

I don't use the USB for charging for my 6S. I bought a 3-prong USB charger that I plug into the cigarette lighter. That way I can keep the car's USB free for my iPod or a USB stick. This also provides a means of charging my wife's phone as well.

(Curious Sidenote: For some reason my wife has a general tendency to not keep her electronic devices charged. Phone, iPad, laptop are almost never or are just barely charged. My theory is that this is a by-product of her hating charging cables, so she's constantly unplugging them or moving them and when she looks for a charger she can never find one. Me on the other hand, I like to keep chargers where I use them. Rather than move a charger from a designated location, I'll buy another charger so I don't have to move them around. It turns out she hates that... until she's looking for a charger and uses mine because she knows where mine are).

(Second curious sidenote: I believe women in general hate cables. I can think of at least two other women in my life prior who hated or were always trying to hide/move cables).

usb ports in cars in general are meant for interface purposes. They are not charging ports so to say however some will charge slowly. As mentioned, get a cig lighter adapter rated at least for 2amps so you can charge 2 phones at the same time at a normal speed. Do yourself a favour and skip on those dollar store/convenience store specials as they are not worth the dollar they cost. A low profile high power like this is good for anything you can throw at it. http://www.amazon.com/Charger-iPhon...fresh&redirect=true&ref_=s9_simh_gw_g107_i1_r

thanks for the link. appreciate it

The cable matters, too. I have a Galaxy S6 Edge, and using the Samsung charger with a cheap cable caused the phone to charge very slowly. It charges at a normal rate with the Samsung-supplied cable.

Most USB cables are 28/28 AWG (28 AWG for both the data and power conductors). There are also 28/24 AWG (28 AWG for the data and 24 AWG for the power conductors), and 30/20 AWG (30 AWG data, 20 AWG for the power conductors). A lower AWG is a larger diameter cable, with a higher current-carrying capacity.

You might try contacting Apple customer service to see what AWG they recommend for a charging cable. There are calculations for current carrying capacity of a cable, but I'm not an EE so I'm not going to make any recommendations.

I believe that starting with iOS 9.02, that only Apple brand lightning cables work correctly on an iPhone. Somehow they have figured out a way to detect Apple cables and won't charge correctly with aftermarket cables. I am talking about charging on a 120V AC outlet in the home.

There is actually a very complex circuit in that little lightning charging tip believe it or not. See here .https://www.chipworks.com/about-chipworks/overview/blog/systems-analysis-apple-lightning-usb-cable Those 2-5 $ cables you see everywhere are Chinese knock offs usually work for a limited time until the next ios release when they are targeted and knocked out because they do not have the true circuit to let them work. Basically the handshake fails. Many of these knock offs can actually damage your apple products.

When a company resorts to crap like this rather than true innovation, their fall from prominence is usually not far after. Shame too because I love my Mac and my iPhone 6s is decent (not great, but decent).

I see it differently. They invented something and want you to use their certified products. They are trying to stop all the Chinese counterfeit merchants from selling something they have no right to sell. There are after market items which are in fact certified by Apple which work perfectly such as these which I use. They are half the price and much sturdier. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00SMVNSXK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've seen too many examples of what happens to companies when they have a monopoly or are part of a controlled oligopoly. Typically they get fat, lazy, and lose customer-focus, and many will do anything (including shady and illegal stuff) to preserve that market share.

Bring on the competition. If you believe the market will bear you charging a 5000 percent mark-up on parts that are being made by near forced-labor in China, then put that theory to the test. If people find less expensive (but functionally equivalent) alternatives, then you've priced your stuff too high. Price it fair and reasonable to begin with, and no one will look for less-expensive alternatives (AND you won't tarnish your brand).

Yeah, Apple never innovates. I have been hearing about their demise for almost 30 years and they continue to have everyone follow. Some cheaper, some faster, most less expensive, but they do follow.

I'm not anti-Apple. Heck an Apple II+ was one of my very first computers. My primary laptop is a Mac, and now my primary phone is an iPhone.

But Steve Jobs is no longer, and it remains to see if they will continue the (rather difficult) innovation trajectory. I'm not saying they can or can't; we'll see.

But engineering proprietary crap into power charging cables, when in fact they should all be standard in the first place, is not a good sign.

With the addition of a $10 sticker inside the back and a $11 pad my Android LG G4 charges wirelessly - very convenient. I've been thinking about a place to install a charge pad in the Genny somewhere. :-)

thanks again. got my dual charger yesterday from your link.. will be testing it today..

The USB AUX ports are not for charging, only for playing music from your device. If you want to charge, you should have at least a 5 watt (or higher) power plug USB adapter, using the same cable you use when charging inside your home.

Are you referring to the USB port in the front end of the console? I have an iPhone 6. My port charges my phone with no issue, as well as allowing the ipod music function.

The USB port is capable of charging a phone, but not designed for that purpose since it provides very low current on the port. I measured 500 mA of current or so, which is way lower than most modern phones support, and results in a very slow charge rate (or long charge time).

I put a mini USB adapter into my cigarette lighter port and get 2100 mA there ...

Interesting... I get a fairly "normal" charge rate. 500 mA is indeed pretty low. I wonder if this is specific to your vehicle, or if it is the same for all 2Gs?
