  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

3.3T Jerky auto transmission (hard downshifts while braking)

Good thing I kept my original ECU intact! I’ll put it back in later today and see if that makes a difference.

The iPhone app didn’t seem to throw errors, it just couldn’t do the actuation test.

Put my original ECU back in. Same as before: the ThinkDiag app reads my VIN correctly, but decodes it wrong (thinks its a KDM G90). Both the 2019 and 2020 Stinger selections fail to turn on the radiator fan.

Good thing I didn’t pay for the year’s software subscription. Back to square one for me, until I can borrow an Android phone and test.

I attached my invoice. If you want to know what exactly the did , maybe you can call them and inquire about my invoice.
When I taked to them , they mentioned some kind of number fix (like an update )the downloaded from genesis corporate but is not in the description. Good luck
Did they make you pay for it?

Hello,

Just sharing an update for the Thinkdiag+ app, I have noticed there was an update for the Kia diagnostics so I decided to give it another shot, I used an Android like before, I chose the 2022 Stinger, and this time I actually got a success message, however it was almost instantaneous, I have done it a few times just to be sure, and it gave me a success every time but again it was instantaneous which kind of worried me, I think @Bhavie you mentioned that you got something similar happen but that did not actually result in a reset correct?

Anyway, I don't think that actually reset anything for me haha I have tried it multiple times and the car still has the harsh downshifting, but hey maybe they are getting closer to support the 2022 G70 who knows, again when I have used the Hyundai tool and picked the G70 as my car profile it still failed there. I will keep an eye for a Hyundai diagnostics update and will try again.

I noticed in the Android App Car Scanner Pro, that there is an area called "Coding and Service" - within there you can make changes to several things on the car and the one that stuck out was the ability to reset the transmission adpatives. I didn't try it but if it works, that is awesome for the people having issues. I am using the OBDLink MX+ OBD2 adapter.

Doesn't work unfortunately. I've tried it and it fails. Contacted developer and they said Hyundai/Kia/Genesis now charge for their access to diagnostic features.

That's why I think all these tools are so expensive now.

I have 2023 g70 and looking for a solution with hard downshift. Did you fix urs?

Dealer reset my adaptives about a month ago, completely fixed the problem. Now we wait.

Been following this thread for awhile now. Just wanted to echo what others have said: having the dealer reset adaptives has made my transmission behave like it should. Smooth starts and downshifts when stopping. Fingers crossed it stays that way. The majority of these cars are still under warranty so I'd recommend asking your dealer to do it.

Hope you're right. The service advisor hedged that if the adaptives are the issue, then logically it will eventually adapt it's way back to the issue. I asked as a joke if I should drastically change the way I drive to change the outcome. He said not really, there are only so many ways you can drive a car, especially if it's your daily commuter. Knowing nothing about transmission adaptives that made sense to me.

For sure. If it continually 'relearns' the old, jerky programming then what a headache. At that point it'd be worth it to invest in some of the previous mentioned products.

Would love to know what the algorithm is for the TCU adaptation. Aggressive braking to a stop? Aggressive braking early followed by light braking? Light braking followed by aggressive braking? You know there’s an engineer somewhere in South Korea that knows exactly what it is.

It has to be a bug. There should be no condition where it decides it's helpful to slam it from 3rd to 2nd with no rev match, especially when just coasting up to a stop sign in comfort mode. The good news for me is it took 3 years to appear. Maybe I'm good for another 3.

I wanted to let you guys know that I had the shift adaptations reset yesterday at my local Genesis dealer under warranty and it has made a huge difference with the harsh 3-2-1 downshifts. It took about 1.5 hours to finish, including them driving the vehicle. Well worth the trip if it's bothering you. Here is the work order with comments.

Considering that my warranty expires in September, and I don't want to be stuck waiting at my Genesis dealer, I think I'll be buying my own third party scanner that can do adaptives. Looking at the XTool D7S, which can do that for the Stinger. Not cheap at about $450, but once I'm out of warranty I need a scan tool that can do most of the dealer only functions. I'd rather do my own work than trust the maybe competent, maybe not service department (and if I save a dealer visit, the tool is paid for).

Hello, friends..
I have a lot of information that has not been discussed in this topic and may be new to most of you.

I am a Genesis G80 owner and I am experiencing the same issues that you are facing in your G70 cars. From what I understand, this issue is present in all Genesis and Kia (Stinger) cars that use a transmission called (A8LR1/A8TR1).

I see that the members in this topic are performing a reset of the adaptive values inside the TCM, and this step may fix the issue, but not always, as it depends on fluid pressures and other factors.

After extensive research, I almost reached a solution and found a new technical bulletin dated 2023 for all Genesis cars (G70, G80, G90, GV70, GV80) regarding transmission solenoids. It contains many details, including:

1- Replacing the old solenoids
2- Resetting the automatic transmission adaptive values (Required)
3- Oil pressure characteristics input procedure (Required)
4- TCM adaptive values learning procedure (Required)

Most likely, these procedures will solve the problem.

An important point to note is that this transmission heavily relies on learning the driving style, especially after adaptive values are reset.

In other words, when the adaptive values reset process is performed, you must instruct the transmission to learn the correct driving style, as illustrated below.

I have attached the technical bulletin with all the information, and I hope this benefits everyone.

Update on this.

The downshifts seemed to have gotten worse (considering the cold temps right now). And the reset no longer seem to fix the issue.

Asked my dealer to look into it some more and they ordered a new tranny and just finished the replacement today.

I was surprised they went straight to a replacement and didn't decide to try and diagnose it further (ATF flush), but I'm obviously not complaining.

Now only time will tell if the problem comes back. I suspect it will.
