  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a '12 with a 3.8 with 12k miles. Has anyone had any problem getting the oil filter cap to seal completely. On my initial 6500 mile oil change I noticed a minor leak. I tightened the cap a bit more and it sealed.
Last week-I changed oil and filter at 12k miles and noticed a spot underneath a couple days later. I tightened it up today a bit more to no avail. I'm thinking the o-ring might be bad so I purchased another filter and replaced the o-ring again. I tried using my torque wrench but it displays the lbs. in a way that I can't see the dial indicator because I'm using rhino ramps.
Anyway- I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this

Tightening it will most likely not seal any leak as the o-ring not a crush design on the collar of the housing. Be very careful how much you tighten that cap as it is all plastic. Doesn't need much. Think about where the o-ring physically sits on the cap. It's an interference seal. Unless the cap is extremely loose or the o-ring is damaged in some way, it shouldn't be leaking.

What you are most likely getting is residual from when you pulled the cap off. When you pull the cap off, oil makes its way into both sides of the threaded areas (cap and housing), which is "downstream" of the o-ring sealing surface. After you replace the cap, residual will continue to come out for a day or two. (Happens to me as well)

Us 2012 models aren't as lucky as the earlier years, as their housings are upright and I don't suspect them having this issue.

The O ring does not fit at the very end of cap. It goes in the space just past the threads. Check the location and condition of the ring.

Thanks for some reassurance. The new seal is in the right place which is about the only place it'll fit. I'm going to leave the belly pan off for a couple days to keep an eye on it. It really is a stupid design!;)

The design is almost the same as my BMW and my Mercedes oil filter housing including the O ring.

For the record, I did my first oil change myself and have no leaks. I will repeat what has already been said and say that the plastic cap does not need to be tightened much at all. In fact, mine more or less "stopped" me from tightening it any further using just a large wrench.

NEW OWNER OF A 2012 GENESIS 3.8. I also have leak, just to be sure there is only one oring to install?. i really tightened alot hope i did not over do it.

Has anyone used those Quikvalve/Fumoto Valves for the Oil drain plug?

I have it on other cars and so far no issues.
