  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Leather wear

Leather is a hide from an animal. They vary by animal and from the tanning, dying and finishing techniques. Naked (unsealed) leather has the most character, has the softest "hand" (soft feel) but is easy to stain because the pores and the fibers are still open. Most auto manufacturers seal their leather with a protective clear sealant (vinyl) to close the pores. Some sealants are thicker than others giving an almost vinyl interior look and feel. Think old GM leather seats.

Leather is supposed to stretch and crease, it adds character to the the material. How happy would you be with a baseball glove or expensive shoes that never break in?So to me creases and wrinkles aren't damage.

Avoid products that "soften old cracked" leather. These are for damaged leather. Avoid chemical commercial cleaners, they will dry out the hide and cause cracks over time.

Condition the leather annually, clean it as often as you do you windshield.

I've had excellent results from Lexol and Leathrique products. Letherique has a great website explaining leather manufacturing and maintenance.

Good luck.

How do i know if I have "premium Leather"? my seats look exactly like yours with the same wear marks in the same exact places and i have the same color seats in a 3.8 signature

Base and Signature have "regular" leather.
Tech and Ultimate had "premium" leather.

Based on some of the press info around launch time, the premium is semi-aniline. It's generally softer than the regular leather, but in my shopping experience, I really did not feel any significant difference in the leather itself between the Signature Pkg, and the Tech and Ultimate Pkg. The actual seat is upgraded significantly however. (Bolsters, extender, etc..)

My '13 Azera had a much softer leather, that felt the same as the 1G Genesis, and the Equus. I had a Hyundai dealer tell me that they moved to the newer style to avoid warranty issues, since the softer stuff could potentially have more wear issues.

Depends if you got a 15 or 16

Since when did the premium leather availability by package change in the 2016.

It didn't - part of the Tech Package for both model years as a quick check on Hyundaiusa.com can easily confirm.

Of course it didn't, hence my reply to the OP.

Sorry - my reply was intended to reinforce your post - I got that you knew.

After the treatment of the leather it gets softer :)

At 16,500 miles, my drivers seat was looking a little worse than I'd expect. I just used the Griot's Garage Leather Care Spray and it looks way better/less worn now - the shine came off and the creases, etc. are much less visible as the leather is back to it's natural "matte" finish again.

Nice! Thanks for the feedback - I'm going to try it!

Re: Leather wear -- OR NOT!

My driver seat is showing wear on my 3.8 ultimate with 5000 miles. Nowhere near the condition of yours but I have noticed it. Definitely not confidence inspiring to say the least..

I drive a 2009 loaded V8 Genesis. I have just passed 50,000 miles and the leather seats are still perfect. Front and back seats look exactly the same and no one ever rides in the back seat.

actually hyundai used some really good quality leather on their g1 genesis. my friends 09 is holding up very nicely. better than lexus I would say.

Hello,

I noticed this problem early on when I first purchased my V6 Ultimate. The leather looked like it was from a 5 year old car, and I had owned it for barely 2 months.

I took it to the dealership after a few months and discussed it with the manager of the service department, who got in contact with Hyundai, and they just called me in to install a new seat cover. Not sure if that means new leather, or what, but I'll let you know what I find out.

Either way, you shouldn't have to settle for low quality, no matter how much your vehicle costs. Talk to your dealer and see if they'll help you out.

Good luck, and wish me a little luck too. Hopefully they finally fix it, along with that annoying sunroof rattle.

Rob

Mine looks worse than yours! 50K miles and I weigh 180lbs. The problem is apparently only with seats that are air conditioned. The dealer will replace the seat cover. Mine did, but it looks even worse now.
