Lexus/Infiniti/Audi owner, comments 2 months after getting Genesis

That can happen, of course. But I think the salient point is that the "new/next" generation knows nothing of Hyundai's past, only that they're making a quality, stylish, and dependable car today.

Yes, they do know about the past. The accountants start fiddling with all kinds of things, to make it cheaper etc. Increase profit margins and poof. That's what's happening to Lexus.

This new generation of buyers has no knowledge of the Hyundai Excel or any other craptacular Hyundai car, but rather only the knowledge of their current line-up, which is highly competitive.

Now, the 2nd gen Genny isn't really that big of a change, it's the same platform with some fascia changes, some interior changes, and new drivetrain components. The drivetrain changes are easily the "scariest" part, but I'd be comfortable buying it. I love my 4.6, and the Tau has won too many awards for them to screw it up badly, IMO.

The Second generation of the Genesis is not out yet. That would be a redesign and as ImInPa said "He hopes it has AWD". All I did was describe what happened to the 3rd Generation GS. They changed it --- And it had AWD - But none of the quality of the 2nd Generation.

Right now, Hyundai is one of the very few auto makers that is not "cheapening out" their vehicles. If anything, they are moving in the opposite direction. Look at the quality of the materials on the new cars. Definitely in the same league as VW IMHO (and I think highly of VW interiors). Let's hope Hyundai doesn't reverse their current trend. As newer buyers will have less/no negative bias on the Hyundai brand, Hyundai has "a lot" of flexibility in upward pricing and can still be very competitive without having to cheapen anything.

Yes, let's hope! - I was "Lexus for Life", until they screwed it up big time! - And I am not talking about Big things. I am talking about the little things like the thickness of the trunk carpeting. It went from about a 1/2 inch thick to about 1/4 inch. - These little changes were done across the car. I would have rather had them raise the price.
 
I went with the Genesis after 3-4 Lexus' (wife currently drives a 330 RX). Never really had an issue with the Hyundai brand, and remember fondly the active discussion in my MBA marketing class in 2009 about Hyundai's "mistake" in not establishing a new brand to sell the Genesis (I think the jury is still out on that one). But the single biggest factor in buying the Genesis for me was the combo of features (V8, interior space, looks) hit right on the head all the things I was looking for, regardless of price. Bigger and faster than the Infinity M as well as the Lexus GS, I figured the only risk I was taking was the chance there would be some significant first year recall or design issue that would sour the deal. Thankfully, my only ongoing complaint (minor) is the trunk lid drips water into the trunk when it rains. Even my wife admits (now) that it was a good purchase, but she's staying with Lexus.

Bigger and faster than the Infiniti M? Sorry. Bigger? Maybe. Faster? Nope. Nor is it faster than the GS. Most road tests I've seen show the M series has faster 0-60 and quarter mile, faster braking, higher top speed, and faster slalom.

Road tests I've seen on the GS 350 showed it had faster 0-60 than the 4.6 tau genny ... that's v-6 vs v-8. The GS also did better in quarter mile and in braking. The genny did better in slalom.

The Genesis is impressive because it's so much less expensive than these cars, and is very competitive with them in so many areas.

Also .. remember.. this is Hyundai's FIRST N.American true effort I believe.. The GS is Lexus' FOURTH effort to establish the current numbers. The M.. 3rd effort.

The outgoing Genesis best numbers I have seen in C&D/MT for 0-60 are
V6 : 5.9 sec
V8 : 5.3 sec

Now the DI V6 already exists as does the 5.0.. Take a guess what they might pull with this heavy car ......

Yeah, and most drive tests on the genny have been at 5.7 or 5.9 seconds. I can't really justify going with the one outlier and quote that as the gold standard for the 0-60 time.

I love my genny, I had an M series sedan immediately before this, and chose the genny over getting another Infiniti. Having said that, my M series was without a doubt the faster, quicker, more responsive car. It also had a tremendously higher cost of ownership.

I'm shocked at what Hyundai was able to accomplish on their first attempt in this segment. Truly shocked.

Besides loving the car itself, it really does make you feel smarter than a lot of people driving other similar, but maybe inferior cars, that you know they speant a lot more on!!

I love pulling up beside or behind high end German or Japanese luxury sedans in my Genny!

Lexus definitely knows how to treat you in the service dept. --:)

The problem is that I have spent waaaay to much time lately getting this pampered treatment.:mad:

Frankly - I'd rather be driving my car, and so far my Genesis fits the bill!
