  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Good morning All... I've got a brand new 2018 G80 and have been having some problems when I use the LKAS lane keeping assist system. When I am driving in a straight line at 70 mph and the car is tracking very well and I have both hands on the wheel at 10 / 2 position, I get the warning that I need to have my hands on the wheel. I take my hands off the wheel and the message goes away... also if I wiggle the wheel back and forth very slightly it immediately goes away. I've had it into the dealer twice for this problem and they can't see why it is happening. Other than this I LOVE MY NEW CAR!!!

Any help?

Sounds odd that taking your hands off the wheel makes it go away. Does it activate with your hands in any other position? Do you drive at 10-2 often? That is no longer recommended because of the air bag. Now 9-3 or 8-4 is taught. I use just 8 most of the time. Handling a car at 70 mph is a little easier than it was in 1952.

My guess is the slight movement of the wheel is what makes the sensor know you are holding the wheel. I know I could go a long distance no hands if it was not for the warning and subsequent knock off of the cruise control. Taking your hands off may move the wheel enough to knock the warning off and holding tight with no movement you may be setting it off.

One you have 15,000 miles on the tires and been through a dozen pot holes, you will need the slight wheel corrections and the problem will go away.

thanks for your input... yes I've tried all other positions on the wheel and I do think it is just that tiny movement that does it... the car is so tuned that running in a straight line at speed it tracks perfectly and really doesn't need any wheel adjustment at all... My hands are very quiet and I guess stationary... The techs are saying there is no error messages in the system and they can't seem to recreate it. I recently linked what was going on when I went out to Palm Springs in the desert... there it seems to happen more frequently than in town... there it is long straight stretches that the car tracks in a straight line and needs no wheel movement to track along... that's when it tried giving the wheel a little wiggle that shut off the warning... smiles hopefully they can make some adjustment or calibration that will stop it from happening... kind of annoying that it can happen once a minute. thanks for the assist... talk to you soon

For a reference, I have never had that message unless I purposefully take my hands off the wheel (mostly to test the message!). I drive with the LKAS on all the time and I am always changing my grip on the wheel, I also alternate between one hand and two. Never get the message even when I am just holding the wheel with thumb and forefinger. I'm at about 10k miles.

Well, mine is probably not a good point of reference as my other post would suggest citing all the issues I've had, however mine does the same thing too. The way I figure is the wheel needs some form of minor directional adjustment to know someone is present. If I hold the wheel perfectly still on a straight portion of highway, the warning goes on, where if I nudge the wheel or say its a windy day and I have to apply some pressure to correct the direction, the warning will not turn on.

I did some experimenting today. When the waening went off, I moved the wheel a tiny bit, but not with my hands. As soon as the steering wheel moves the tiniest bit, it stops the warning and continues. Normal driving, you do move the wheel a tiny bit and especially here in New England the road curves enough to require hands on the wheel. Out west on a good road, straight for miles, it would just go straight with no hands. My advice would be to loosen up your grip a bit so the wheel jiggles. Drink six cups of coffee before a road trip.

I've had the warning also when I'm driving in a straight line with my hands on the wheel for a while and I asked the same question here. Someone in the forum told me that the wheel is detecting the slight adjustments you automatically make when driving. When you're driving very straight, it thinks your hands are off the wheel.

There's nothing wrong with the your car rest assured. if driving in a straight line on a smooth road there might not be any corrections that the car needs to make so the steering wheel doesn't move which will alarm the system after a period of time. this is especially true if you have it on the adaptive setting in which case the wheel will make minor adjustments by itself and you can just place your hands on it and not give enough pressure for the system to sense your inputs. this has happened many times to myself. on a side note the system goes for roughly 15 seconds without an alert but on a smooth road which is incredibly straight it is possible for the system to go for more than 45 seconds on the wheel which also happened to me on my way to palm springs.

I think it is a nag we will have to live with. It is almost too precise. It seeks steering wheel movement when none is needed and then bitches about it. :) I turned it off and now just use the warning.

I do like that it warns you when you turn on a turn signal and there is a car in the way.

Thanks everybody for their valuable input... I had the car at the dealer and they worked on it for two days and diagnosed that it was the steering wheel that was at fault and said it had sensors in the wheel that recognized your hands being on the wheel and they put a new wheel on for me under warrantee. I have come to the same conclusion as the others have responded, that the system needs to have a tiny bit of movement of the wheel to keep the warning off and when it does come on a very slight wiggle of the wheel turns it off... with the new wheel on the warning comes on when I am going straight and not moving the wheel. So, I guess we'll just have to live with it for now. I am attending a Genesis Event in Los Angeles on December 1st and will bring this up to them to see if there is some adjustment or calibration that can be done to alleviate this issue. I'll let you know if there is a fix...

Again thank you all for your comments... I am quite pleased with this Genesis Group... and will follow this and others comments in the months to come... Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all...
Best

Ernie,
What does one have to do to get an invite to that event?
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks, I will give them a call and see what they can do.

At least yours works. Four months in a row the monthly report shows a problem with the system. The dealer kept resetting it saying it was a glitch and nothing was wrong with the car. Then the wheel turned sharply on its own and they kept the car for three weeks, Hyundai engineer told them to replace the sensors. Now it works intermittently on roads where the line demarcations are the same. Put three hundred more miles on the car same issue with it not always working. Tried to get them to replace car, soon might be legal issue. Gas mileage keeps going down and they argue it is awd. The 2018 loaner got better mileage and it was a 2018 which I put almost 900 miles with the same type of driving.

No doubt this is an annoyance. First off, why the loud audio warning? My Acura TLX simply blinked a light on the dash, bright enough for the operator to see but not upsetting all the occupants in the car, with the loud jolting warning. The Acura never went off, if your hands were on the wheel. Even with a loose grip. I find with the G80, it pretty much requires a "death grip" on the wheel to avoid the warning. This is simply poorly engineered, or, perhaps, born out of an adundance of caution, law suits etc. It is annoying. I doubt it is anything they can "fix"

Maybe it varies with the wheel. Mine has never gone off even if I use two fingers on the wheel. That is on two different cars. It will go off with no hands. This has been brought up before and I wonder if dry skin, calluses, lack of movement is the cause. You may have long straight drives where no wheel correction is required and with no movement it sets the alarm off. It has not been verified, but it is thought that tiny wheel movement being sense, not grip, is what the alarm is looking for.

I have had the problem of the "no hands on the wheel" message also. I found that I could take my hands off the wheel and then about every 10 seconds or so take 1 finger and just turn the wheel just a little, not enough to feel it in the car and go for many miles including curves and not get the message.
So it seems to be wheel input that keeps the message away.

That's interesting. Is your G80 2018? Maybe some difference in how the system works but I would dobut it. I do know the alarm in the G80 is loud and unduly concerns passengers. It goes off when there is no reason for it to go off. I think I will check with my dealer, your experience indicates it can work properly. Thanks.

Is your G80 2018? Maybe some difference in how the system works but I would doubt it. I was told by Acura that turning the steering wheel or not turning it, such as a a straight drive, has nothing to do with the hands off wheel warning. It is accomplished by sensors that can tell if your hands are on the wheel. Similar to touch screen sensors on a computer.

Both my 2015 and now 2018. I'll have to try driving with gloves and see what happens. If it happens repeatedly on you it would be interesting to try some hand cream or wiping with a moist towel to see if it makes a difference in contact. Or wiping down the wheel with something. Sounds annoying though.
