If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. As I past 5k k I thought I should note the good the bad and the ugly.....

The Good...

Fit and Finish
Forget this is a Hyundai, I spent about 3 months pay for this car. it should feel as if built from the finest materials and crafted with care.... It does. My benchmarks are a 528xi and M45 having spent similar time in those cars I can say the materials FEEL better than the 528 and it is better executed than the M45. The soft touch dash materials and leather insert are leaps ahead of the hard plastic dashes in the 528/M45. the M45's wood inserts, being real, have a better look than the fake wood of the Genesis, but as it is used sparingly it can be accepted. After 5000, sometimes hard, miles no rattles emerged, no stitching has come loose. I have never had a car make it to 5000 miles without a rattle being exposed.
Each time I open the door I am impressed this is perhaps where Hyundai has done it best work with the Genesis. It will be interesting to see if this quality is maintained as volumes pick up.

Powertrain
The 4.6 power builds power slowly, this might sound bad but it is a wonderful quality. There is no wild peaks or valleys in the powerband, more RPM means more power, steadily climbing to it's peak. Stay below 3k and it would be hard to tell there is significant power available, it feels like your everyday Camry or Accord, which for commuting is perfect. At 3k the power comes in and at 4k the engine is alive. I love this! At no time does the engine sound invade the cabin, it is only above 5500 that you hear the engine in the cabin at which time it is a muffle nothing more.

Suspension
Power on, this is the best suspension I have ever experienced in a sedan. This is a two headed suspension, read about the other head in the ugly section.... but here we are talking about the good and boy is it ever good...
little body roll, excellent tip in, great road feel, and it warns you at the edge prior to giving way to understeer. Controlled powersides with ESC disabled are a nice way of resolving the understreer. I would rate it above the M45 just behind the 528.

HVAC
Living in the great white north window icing is the norm. Finding a car with climate control which also manages to clear fogging/icing windows is rare, This is the first car which delivers on this. Most importantly it does so without running the window defogger at 100 MPH winds. I have never noticed when the system is cycling into window defogger on this car which is amazing. Prior cars which had auto defogger would blow every hot air up the windshield and into my face usually forcing me to lower the sunvisor to block the air from my face. No need in this car. I should note it is such as good system that I didn't even notice how good it was. It wasn't until I drove my wife's 2006 Odyssey and was hit in the face with high speed hot air that I really understood how good the HVAC in the Genesis is.

Radio...
The lexicon system has more technology and speakers than I could believe were needed, the sound delivered is near perfect. Sound clarity is maintained at volumes higher than I would listen to on a regular basis. The bass, thanks to the dedicated speaker can shake the car if desired. I like that each sound source can have its own EQ presets as XM always seems to need more tweaking than FM radio or the iPod.

The Bad

Navigation
I don't know what to say, the ability to enter a destination is almost absent. Entering a road name and hoping the system knows the road by the name you entered AND is willing to agree the road exists in the city you are hoping to visit (you can't select CITY in the destination), leaves most attempts to map travel with frustration. Simply adding a CITY level focus for the NAV unit would make this a tolerable system, but as is, I avoid using it for mapping.

Auto head lights
The system doesn't seem to know what to do at dusk, switch on an off every 15-30 seconds. A 2005 Corolla has a better auto headlight system. It just isn't acceptable in a car of this price to have this work so poorly.

The ugly...

Suspension

Out of full power the rear end seems to wander..... If the engine is running less than 4k rpm I would describe the rear end as loose. Driving the same road at the same speed once in 6th gear at 2k rpm and again in 4th gear at almost 4k rpm I can say the car seems more easily upset , more likely to skip left or right over a bad road if running at 2k than at 4k.

Transmission

I know, it is a ZF tranny, but it should be called a nanny, In "manual" mode the ZF still auto up and down shifts. I thought I pushed the level to the right so I could decide when to shift.... A "manual" mode should allow a driver to run to redline and stay there as long as they wish, conversely it should only downshift when RPMs have dropped to the point that the car is no longer able to service the gear (around 800 rpm?)...

I have never been so happy with a car, the issues I raise are not relationship enders... I look forward to years of chasing corners in luxury.....

Per your transmission information. Manual mode. It is my understanding that any automatic transmission that is in manual mode will auto upshift when you get to redline, or an RPM that the manufacturer does not want the engine to go above. This is to protect the engine from overreving. Although you may remember it is in manual mode, other people could forget it is there (like my wife) and then overrev the engine.
As I read your post, it sounds like you don't get it to redline. If you do, it sounds like you want to leave it at redline. That will damage an engine. The Genesis system is to protect the engine. (I had an other car with the manual mode that also would autoshift when it got to redline).

As for downshifting (running at 800RPM????), this is to prevent the engine from lugging. Don't forget these engines are DOHC 4Valve engines with VVT on both the intake and exaust, designed to rev, not to run at idle speed.

Thanks Bob, I should be more clear.

If I run the engine to say 6k rpm (well short of redline) in Manual mode, then roll off the throttle the transmission upshifts.

Also I would prefer the transmission did not downshift until required (to avoid lugging), however I found that the car will downshift around 2k rpm which seems early to me....

Good post! I agree with most everything you have said. I would add that I have grown to love the 18" wheel design(with Wing logo) and still marvel at the sparkles in the paint. On the negative side, I think you characterized the low speed supension issue well. The only other nit picks are the yellow No Passenger Air Bag Icon and the lack of a push button on the trunk to open it. Aside from low speed suspension pummelling I look forward to driving "Worf" every time I get in. I wish you many happy and safe miles.

Great review and comparison. Thank you very much!

The trunk does have a push button (said to say my friend with a M45 showed it to me).

Under the truck lip above the license plate to the right there is a long rubber press switch.

I was just going to post the same thing, but you beat me to it. Well after all, I did read the owners manual.

Bob

Well, ideally the engine will not shift unless you specify it, period. In some cars with a manual mode to the automatic transmission, if you put the transmission in manual mode and run it up to redline, the rev limiter will cut in and bounce you back down 500 RPMs. But it will not change gears, and you can run right up to the rev limiter and get bounced back down again and again without forcing a gear shift.

I could be remembering wrong, but I know I've read that some luxury sport sedan has that feature. Maybe the Infiniti G37?

This is to protect the engine from overreving. Although you may remember it is in manual mode, other people could forget it is there (like my wife) and then overrev the engine.
Right. I think it's a question of how much rope you want to give the owner to hang themself with. Some people will do fine with a 'proper' manual mode. Others - and frankly, that includes me - would sooner or later forget the car was in manual mode and run the car near redline until it overheated.

well, the engine in quiet, and there are times I look down to see I am still in 4th gear at 85 MPH cruising down the highway.

opec loves me.

As a potential V6 owner, I must say your post hit the ball out of the park !! The only problem was, you were too easy on your description of the navigation system. How could anyone buy a system where you could not program the location of a street in a different city from where you are. If this is true, and other members seem to agree that it is, other than looking at a pretty map, the system is not meeting the needs of 90 % of the users. Buyer beware!!!!

You know, I've not even tried to navigate by using the "manual" method. When you use the voice entry, it asks for the state, then the city, then the address. Never had a single issue with state or city when I've used the voice command approach (???? )

Of course you can enter destination state/city/street separately in the Genesis navigation system! Similarly when you search for POI, you can do it based on where you are, any city center (in any state), or along a route you already have programmed. You can be driving in Boise, ID and search for street addresses, restraurants, whatever in NYC...

I'm going by memory here...but when you go to the "Enter Address" by default it asks you for street name. However on the bottom-left there's an option to change city/state...simply go there (move down-left) and click when highlighted...

Personally, I find the Nav system very intuitive and easy to "navigate," and with a comprehensive list of POIs, and that's coming from a high-end Garmin unit.

And like Sonata2009 said, you can also do it via voice commands...I talk to my Genesis quite a bit while driving. ;-)

As I've said before, NOT user friendly.

You must have a different nav than me, when I select enter address and move to the option to change , it ONLY allows selecting state.

the voice nav does allow selecting city, the voice recon is bad but at least I can select a city using voice.

I apologize...I mis-remembered the order of operation doing it the "manual" way. If you're searching for a specific address, after selecting state, you then have to search for street name...only THEN does it allow you to choose the city (based on all the cities in that state with that street). In other words, it looks at all the streets at the state level first...not only the city in which you're in. If you're searching for an uncommon street name, you get a short list of cities...obviously for something like "State" or "Elm" you get a longer list.

If you just want to get directions to a city without a specific address, I would suggest going to the POI menu and selecting "Near City Center"...pick the city and then any random POI (city hall, park, etc.)...

Hope this helps.

Fortunately, or maybe even unfortunately, the day when our "cars" talk back to us isnt that far away.

Nice write up by the way. Glad you like your Genesis overall.

Great write up. Well I made the leap today. I never in my life would have ever considered a Hyundai until I say the Genesis. I am 34 years old and when I was in school, saying Hyundai would get you beat up or laughed at... I brought my new ride home tonight. Black and Black fully loaded V8. I feel like when I wake up in the morning I'm gonna ask myself... who is this woman laying in my driveway... I gave up my 2005 Armada to flirt with Hyundai.. I hope I wont be disappointed...

thats not true, Mazda's, the 3 and the 6, the engine will not upshift, it will bounce off the redline until you upshift
