Your dealer is why Hyundai has a problem being viewed as an upscale car. If I pay over 30k for a car, no way am I going to put cheap oil in it. I use Valvoline synpower in all my vehicles. It is also approved by Mercedes. Mobil 1 and Penzoil Plat. synthtic are also very good as is Castrol syntec.
My local dealer offers a $19.95 oil and filter change. That price almost sounds too good and after asking a few questions, the picture got a little clearer. It seems they use blended synthetic Coastal brand oil. I've seen this brand around in parts stores for years and it's generally the cheapest brand on the shelf; something I might buy for an old lawn mower. I only have around 1,400 miles on my car so I've not had my first oil change. The dealer says it meets all the published Hyundai oil requirements. I'm a little scared of this Coastal stuff. Anyone out there know anything about it?
My greatest concern with the Coastal oil is what it may be missing in the additives department. I think the additive packages are one of the things that separate the preimum oils from the cheaper ones. Since I use my car as my business vehicle and usually run around 200,000 miles before I trade, I'm a little apprehensive about trying a cheap brand. I would be interested in hearing from anyone using Coastal blended oil. Your suggestion of the oil analysis is something I definitely would do if I ever ran a discount or a store brand oil.If the oil meets specs, then it meets specs. The ONLY way to know would be to do an oil change, and then do an oil analysis.
Our Hyundai dealer also offers the $20 oil change; however, I'm still using my freebie oil changes and have yet to do my own. Right now it's not getting driven, other than a cross country trip and back over Christmas by my wife.
0w-20 oil synthetic oil, protects the engine and allows Hyundai to meet the EPA requirements for fuel economy. Engines are machined to such close and tight tolerances now, that such oils can perform fine. 0w-20, 5w-20, 5w-30, even 40w oil will work. If you drive it like you stole it, then use the thicker oil; otherwise, about the only difference is a bit lower fuel economy from having the engine pump thicker oil thru the engine.
The car companies like to recommend a 5w-20 oil so they can use it in their EPA mpg tests.
I use the 5w-30 or 5w-40 Mobil 1 oils in my engines. I suspect your oil analysis would show less wear materials with these oils.
I have switched oil in both my Sonata and Genesis. Now running 5w-30. Thanks for your advice.
Is 0w-30 Mobil 1 synthetic o.k. to use?
Marty
Yes for sure.
In fact it will have superior performance under cold weather start conditions.
Thanks you. I live in Southern Calif.

I have had better success with this than anything, including Mobil 1 (any weight). Pennzoil Ultra 5w-30.
Mobil 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy is an excellent choice to use in any weather. I have used it in my Genesis for at least the last 3 years. Is 0w-30 Mobil 1 synthetic o.k. to use?

SCOTT: Although your engine ticking is getting louder, wear metals are looking better, so we aren't sure
where the noise is coming from. You noted that you kept this oil in use for the past 8 months, and based on
these wear numbers (and other data we've collected over the years), you'll be happy to know that calendar
time isn't really a factor in today's engines, so don't sweat having the oil in place for a long time. The
viscosity was a bit thin for a 5W/30, but that's probably because something thinner was used last time; not a
problem. This oil can see more use. Not bad!
