If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My Engine Oil analysis @ 19,500 miles (4.6)

Cool. Just checking. Hopefully wont cause issues from the dealer's end of things...

Nah, my dealer SM and my Regional Field Engineer are very good terms. Trust me they enjoy having me around... :)

That would be settling to know. I ran that exact oil in my 405WHP SRT-4. Holds up well on a turbo'd motor with 5K interval changes, occasionally running 111 leaded race gas. ;-)

My local dealer offers a $19.95 oil and filter change. That price almost sounds too good and after asking a few questions, the picture got a little clearer. It seems they use blended synthetic Coastal brand oil. I've seen this brand around in parts stores for years and it's generally the cheapest brand on the shelf; something I might buy for an old lawn mower. I only have around 1,400 miles on my car so I've not had my first oil change. The dealer says it meets all the published Hyundai oil requirements. I'm a little scared of this Coastal stuff. Anyone out there know anything about it?

Your dealer is why Hyundai has a problem being viewed as an upscale car. If I pay over 30k for a car, no way am I going to put cheap oil in it. I use Valvoline synpower in all my vehicles. It is also approved by Mercedes. Mobil 1 and Penzoil Plat. synthtic are also very good as is Castrol syntec.

I agree. Never heard of any dealership using an offbrand oil just to attract customers with a cheap price point. I also use Valvoline Synpower in one of my vehicles and Mobil 1 in the other, but Coastal, i think NOT. BTW, I said this is my local dealer but it isn't the dealer I purchased my car from.

If the oil meets specs, then it meets specs. The ONLY way to know would be to do an oil change, and then do an oil analysis.

Our Hyundai dealer also offers the $20 oil change; however, I'm still using my freebie oil changes and have yet to do my own. Right now it's not getting driven, other than a cross country trip and back over Christmas by my wife.

0w-20 oil synthetic oil, protects the engine and allows Hyundai to meet the EPA requirements for fuel economy. Engines are machined to such close and tight tolerances now, that such oils can perform fine. 0w-20, 5w-20, 5w-30, even 40w oil will work. If you drive it like you stole it, then use the thicker oil; otherwise, about the only difference is a bit lower fuel economy from having the engine pump thicker oil thru the engine.

My greatest concern with the Coastal oil is what it may be missing in the additives department. I think the additive packages are one of the things that separate the preimum oils from the cheaper ones. Since I use my car as my business vehicle and usually run around 200,000 miles before I trade, I'm a little apprehensive about trying a cheap brand. I would be interested in hearing from anyone using Coastal blended oil. Your suggestion of the oil analysis is something I definitely would do if I ever ran a discount or a store brand oil.

The car companies like to recommend a 5w-20 oil so they can use it in their EPA mpg tests.

I use the 5w-30 or 5w-40 Mobil 1 oils in my engines. I suspect your oil analysis would show less wear materials with these oils.

I have switched oil in both my Sonata and Genesis. Now running 5w-30. Thanks for your advice.

Is 0w-30 Mobil 1 synthetic o.k. to use?

Marty

Yes for sure.

In fact it will have superior performance under cold weather start conditions.

Thanks you. I live in Southern Calif.

Marty

I have had better success with this than anything, including Mobil 1 (any weight). Pennzoil Ultra 5w-30.

I'm running the Platinum. Might kick it up a notch next change and do the Ultra.

My Dealer in St. Louis, Dean in West County, uses Castrol GTX and I change it every 5K. Figure it is well documented in case of any problems, not that I will have it 10 years, but you never know.

Mobil 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy is an excellent choice to use in any weather. I have used it in my Genesis for at least the last 3 years.

However, Mobil 1 0W-30 European Formula (probably not available at most retailers in the US) should only be used on BMW, MB, and VW engines that specify a European formula oil. Same applies for Mobil 1 0W-40 European Formula, which is widely available in the US.

3rd engine oil analyis - this is the 1st test on 5w-30 vs. 5w-20. Oil has 5,000 miles on it, which is what I drive the Genesis per year.

SCOTT: Although your engine ticking is getting louder, wear metals are looking better, so we aren't sure
where the noise is coming from. You noted that you kept this oil in use for the past 8 months, and based on
these wear numbers (and other data we've collected over the years), you'll be happy to know that calendar
time isn't really a factor in today's engines, so don't sweat having the oil in place for a long time. The
viscosity was a bit thin for a 5W/30, but that's probably because something thinner was used last time; not a
problem. This oil can see more use. Not bad!

Re: My Engine Oil analysis (4.6L)

Might as well keep this going..... 5w-30 seems to quiet down my engine noise. I'll monitor this long term to see if the oil was the solution. MOD's....anyway to edit my original title for this thread?

I AM A COMPLETE MORON!! MY PREVIOUS SAMPLE ABOVE WAS FROM DECEMBER OF 2013 JUST BEFORE I PUT THE CAR IN STORAGE. THIS SAMPLE IS FROM WHEN I TOOK THE CAR OUT OF STORAGE A FEW WEEKS AGO. IN CONCLUSION, I HAVE TAKEN 2 SAMPLES OF OIL FROM THE CAR AND DOWN 2 ANALYSIS' ON IT!! At least BlackStone was almost on the nuts with stating around 4,200 miles on the oil. This is about the total miles I drove the car last year before storage

4th analysis:

SCOTT: We're not sure what you were using before, but it would be interesting to see how that oil sample
compared to this one in terms of metals, since you mentioned the engine is running quieter now. At this
point, we don't see any evidence of poor wear or other problems. Metals all line up nearly perfectly with
universal averages, which are based on about 4,200 miles on the oil for the 4.6L V-8 Hyundai engine. No
fuel, moisture, coolant, or other contamination turned up here. From what we see in this sample, this engine
looks great. No problems to report!

I was in Walmart about a week ago and noticed that Mobil 1 5W-30 EP (Extended Protection) has been lowered in price to the same as regular Mobil 1 5W-30. About $25 for a 5 quart jug. Same for other viscosities. Not sure if that is a permanent change or temporary.
