  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My new 2013 Genesis 3.8 needs transmission!

I don't think you can just blame hyundai for this. I feel for you..... But it is a used car. You had it check out but you don't know what the previous owner did to the car. Even the best mechanic is not a fortune teller and cannot see inside the transmission. Just look at the thread running just below this one entitled "What have you raced?" - use that to realize that unfortunately many people treat their cars like animals. I see videos of Genesis sedans on YouTube with the tires smoking and power breaking and all sorts of abuse. It's just sad really.

My comment doesn't do anything to resolve your situation or give you comfort I know. But you really cannot just blame hyundai because who knows what happened to the car in the first 60k miles.

I would hear your options at the dealer. And then if it's too pricey I would suggest you check with a transmission shop. I'm sure there are shops which can rebuild the 8 speed already. That will be a less costly option I am 99% sure.

The warrant for a non CPO is 5 years / 60k miles. So you are out of warranty for sure. You will need to shop for pricing now on a good rebuild.

Ok good news Hyundai Dealership WILL cover the transmission and labour under good faith.

I saw the dealer invoice......

Transmission was $9100.......$575 fluid.......30 labour hours est..... to install.

Thank you Hyundai.

Good news.

You lucked out.

That was very kind of the dealer.

Basically, when you bought your used Genesis you made bad decisions. You bought a car that the warranty for everything had just expired on (60,000 miles). You had the option to buy a CPO used car, or to purchase an extended warranty. Unfortunately it seems you passed on both options. It just makes no sense these days to buy a car with zero warranty coverage and then get upset when something goes wrong. You should sing the praises of your Hyundai dealer. They gave you a big gift.

Wow, that's an awesome news! When everything is worked out, let us know which dealer it is. They deserve a round of applause.

You go SO lucky. Out of curiosity, where is the dealership located? If I was you I'd give them my business for my next car and let them know it was because they helped you out of a sticky situation with your current car. Not sure about this but since it's a Hyundai transmission that should come with a separate warranty. Make sure to ask. It might be covered for at least 50 or 60k as a stand alone component from the rest of the car.

I had a similar issue with my 2012 3.8. Fortunately, the dealer replaced it under warrenty. According to the dealer, Hyundai wanted them to just swap out the tranny, didn't want them to work on it. It's been flawless since.

I believe that Hyundai installed parts are only covered for a year.

While unfortunate, transmission failure even occurs with long respected brands. In my family alone, I had to replace the transmission in my 2003 Infiniti G35 at around 70k miles, my brothers went out on a 2006 Nissan Maxima at under 70k and we recently sold my wifes 2002 Honda Accord due to slipping trans at around 110k or so.

Congrats....It happens. I am VERY happy for you.

Now that you have it fixed, NO MORE BLOWING TRANNYS!
Hehehe, I just wanted to be able to say that and not have it seem out of context.

It seems like this dealership did you a real favor. It would be pretty cool of you to write them a good review or 5 on car websites you used to do your research.

I have 2013 Genesis 3.8 and I had same problem. When the car is hot 1to2 and 2 to 3 cars RPM going to so high until 4-5k. after gear change.
I brought the dealer they couldnt find problem. also I bought external warranty but noone tell me it doesnt cover if you are driving for TLC (commercial use). My car is right now 68k. my external warranty cover until 110k ( from fidelity)

I am not a lawyer and cannot offer legal advice but after a lifetime of buying and selling cars I can say that this is the type of risk you always take with someone else's vehicle. You don't know how they drove it and may not know how they maintained it. Or it could have been a lemon straight out of the factory - hey, it happens.

I'm in my point in life where I don't have to buy used, but if I did it would always be with an insurance policy to cover this very kind of issue - especially on a high-tech luxury ride. They get pricey awfully quickly.

Since you did have an inspection prior to purchasing, was there any sort of guarantee given with that inspection? That may be your only recourse at this point.

State laws regarding this type of issue vary. You should contact your local department of consumer rights/services (whatever they call it) and see if they can offer some advice.
