  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My TL gets 13.5 mpg city. Can I do better in Genesis?

I'm sorry if this has been beaten to death but I did 2 searches for "mpg" and "gas" and was directed to an advanced search page. That tells me there haven't been many posts about this.

I currently have a 2010 TL. Don't bash it until you drive one. SH-AWD is the bomb and Acura came in 3rd in yesterdays JD Power Quality reports although the looks are...well unique. That said; I expected about 17 mpg but here in LA the driving is never easy hence the current mileage. And, frankly, I'm shocked. That's SUV mileage imo. And it's not because I can't afford it...I can. I'm hoping to find a car that is fun to drive, somewhat luxurious, and can get 17-20 mpg in the city....for the sake of my conscience.

I think the Genesis might fit the bill but thought I’d check in and see if you folks would share real world numbers with me.

Thanks

Cool. Thanks. It looks like the V6 gets considerably better mileage than the V8. The 2009 V8 gets better mileage than the 2010. Or maybe there weren't enough miles tracked in 2010-2011. Great help tho. Appreciated. But the only trouble is that it's combined and I don't see a city breakdown. Combined the TL is right there. But I do most of my drving on city streets.

I've read many posts on here of people getting near 30mpg with their cars. High 20's even with the V8.

My guess is, if you're not a lead-foot, you can match those numbers as well.

That's astounding. And it takes regular if you want. How much would the 8 spd. help in city driving? Seems to me not too much as I'd never get out of 3rd.

MPG According to EPA:

2010 Acura TL AWD, auto or manual - 17/25
2012 Genesis L3.8 V6 - 19/29

So I would estimate your MPG (based on your driving habits) would go up to about 16 MPG city with the V6 Genesis. However, also consider that the Genesis V6 uses regular gas, and the Acura uses premium.

I don't know about the Acura or the 2012 Genesis, but 2009-2011 Genesis gets better MPG at 65 MPH, than at 55.

As I noted above, the 2009-2011 Genesis has gotten at least 1.5 MPG better than EPA highway rating if going 65 MPH, presumably because the transmissions have two overdrive gears that are quite tall (because of high engine torque). However, not sure if one can consistently go 65 MPH in LA due to traffic (except very early in the morning or late at night).

Genesis V6 only takes regular. V8 takes regular or premium.

Mark 888 sounds like you've done some driving in LA. They're closing the 405 from Ventura to the 10 for 2 weekend days. People are freaked out. They're predicting "carmageddon". Or maybe it should be called "karmageddon". Thx. for your input.

Yes, I have been to LA on business quite a few times and drove rental cars, but fortuneately there is a little less traffic where I live now.

I get 23 around town, 27 on the road. 2010 V8.

Stoofpilot-please share your technique... I guess I love putting my "foot in it"!

I think that is typical, but probably not relevant to Glashub on LA roads (some people prefer to call them parking lots).

LOL. Yeah, LA...you sit in a parking lot aka road idling and then when you get an opening you swerve into the lane with the open spot while flooring it....and then jam on the brakes so you don't rear end someone.

I have no trouble getting 19 MPG in the City and 28 MPG on the Highway with my 2011 V8 Genesis.

MPG is a non-linear when you are talking about stop & go traffic driving.

The engine is still burning fuel when you are not moving (or creeping along). The MPG in this condition approaches zero...it does not take a lot of zeros mixed into the average to really drop the number into the dirt...
