  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My TL gets 13.5 mpg city. Can I do better in Genesis?

MPG is a non-linear when you are talking about stop & go traffic driving.

The engine is still burning fuel when you are not moving (or creeping along). The MPG in this condition approaches zero...it does not take a lot of zeros mixed into the average to really drop the number into the dirt...

That is absolutely correct, and why it is totally irrelevant as to what someone gets in Minneapolis compared to LA. Even two people in LA may have vastly different results depending on time of day they travel and travel routes.

For example, if a driver gets 2.5 MPG below EPA estimates for Acura TL driving in LA, then he will most likely get about 2.5 MPG below EPA estimates for Genesis driving in LA (except for some small allowance for transmission with more gears in Genesis).

FYI...Here is the EPA UDDS speed/time graph used to get "city" estimates.....23 minutes total with not alot of stopped/creep time in there...

Very good points rwlewis and Mark 888. Thx for the graph too.

I would suggest the new Tesla sedan. Wouldn't use any Petrol:cool: Who price of car is pocket change to most.

In most cases, hydrocarbons are used to make electricity (which costs money to purchase from electric company) so not as obvious a decision even if the Tesla sedan was affordable.

I have a 2009 V6 Genesis. I get 19.5 to 21.0 locally in a suburban setting. On the interstate to Indy and Nashville I get 27+ with the most being 29.5.... For a comfortable car with 290HP I think that is pretty decent .CAFE may not agree. I read that they are looking at 65 yes 65 mpg in about 10 years.

I'm sorry if this has been beaten to death but I did 2 searches for "mpg" and "gas" and was directed to an advanced search page. That tells me there haven't been many posts about this.

I currently have a 2010 TL. Don't bash it until you drive one. SH-AWD is the bomb and Acura came in 3rd in yesterdays JD Power Quality reports although the looks are...well unique. That said; I expected about 17 mpg but here in LA the driving is never easy hence the current mileage. And, frankly, I'm shocked. That's SUV mileage imo. And it's not because I can't afford it...I can. I'm hoping to find a car that is fun to drive, somewhat luxurious, and can get 17-20 mpg in the city....for the sake of my conscience.

I think the Genesis might fit the bill but thought I’d check in and see if you folks would share real world numbers with me.

Thanks

My 2011 4.6 does about 14 in LA traffic. With that said my 2008 C300 with a 3.0 v6 did about the same. So unless you want to drive around in some ecno box the picture is not pretty as far as LA driving is concerned. Short of having a car with auto start and stop(not avialable in the US) or a hybrid that turns the engine off while idle the numbers are probably going to be pretty ugly.

On road trips I get around 30 mpg and in the outskirts of LA or on less traffic days I get 20 mpg. I guess what I am trying to say is that with this level of traffic is just not a pretty picture either way.

Relax Mark, it was a joke, but you always pick everything apart as usual........:p

Yes, I know the part about "car is pocket change to most" was a joke. I was just pointing out the widespread misconception that electric cars don't use hydrocarbons. I wasn't picking apart your humor, just adding some irony to it.

Ah, a fellow denizen. I'm in the 818. Did your dealership do right by you? Care to share who you bought it from?

Just for future reference, search terms of 3 or less characters are ignored. I hate that feature personally. But, it is what it is.

Good to know Gambler. Thanks. Never occured to me that would be an issue.

I got the car from Keyes Hyundai in Van Nuys; I submitted a request online and got rough payment info from my salesman over the phone. The salesman was great; very nice and helpful. I told him I wanted to be in and out quickly and he did just that. I bought the car when the sun was going down so I didn't notice on the A pillar cloth until the next day but he had that taken care of as well. His name is:

Miles Blake
Sales Representative
Keyes Hyundai
5319 Van Nuys Blvd
Van Nuys, CA 91403

818-574-0100 - Main
310-980-0100 - Cell

One thing I will also add to this the guy in the finance department, you know the guy who trys to sell you everything extra he was kind of a jacka$$. He even went as far as to lie about Hyundai's lease wear and tear policy basically telling me I am allowed 1 scratch and every other little thing they would ding me for. Now mind you I leased my previous car before and I recited Mercedes policy within the context of my question before he came up with his BS. All this to try to sell me on some protection plan. At the end of the day I didn't get his magical protection plan because that kind of policy sounded crazy and I take great care of my cars. And guess what? I went home and on Hyundai Financials site they have a sheet to print out for wear and tear and it was almost exactly the same as mercedes...

Their service department is friendly; they installed my wings for me. When installing the tailgate wing they didn't polish out the scratches that were left. But I brought that to their attention and they fixed it with no issue. Overall very happy with that part of my experience as well.

So in summary just that one guy in the finance department lol.

Good to know. Thanks. I was thinking of the one in Glendale because the service dept is nice (my wife owns an Elantra) but they are small. I'll keep this info, and again, thanks for taking the time to post it.

What kind of work have you had done at Glendale?

Timing belt, regular stuff, ect. Nice people, more transparent, and less money than Keyes. They also have one or two certified Geneis/Equus service people on hand. Good experience but as stated, smal dealership.

worst mpg around town for a tank (that it resets itself after each tank refill is annoying. that and the stupid default position for the back up warning system is "off"?? how dumb... the switch has to be in/on and the light lit up, should be in/off and then the light on) is 16.3mpg. that was alot of idling, short trips (2 miles or less). i have gotten 27+mpg on long trips at 80+mph. that feat in and of itself floors me coming from driving nothing but V8 cars/trucks almost my entire life. it gets the same mpg on the hwy as my brother's '06 sonata v6. around town i think my norm is right around 17.5mpg or so.

My worst city MPG was 14.6 (V8 2011)
During trip to Vegas I got 25+, that's with average speed about 85 and occasional 120-140 mph :)
