NAV question

I know it's 'in the book' [somewhere] but what is the fastest way to turn off the NAV system while driving? I pushed the let's give a verbal command button on the steering wheel and after the beep I said,"end route guidance" several times but to no avail .
I was a few miles from a requested destination that I had entered when I recognized the area and no longer needed route guidance. The trouble was that I couldn't safely drive the car and find a way to get the NAV system 'voice' to understand that its services were no longer needed and that it was time to be quiet and shut down. Mercifully when I returned to the car it had stopped 'recalculating' due to all the short cuts I remembered.

On the 8" nav screen there is a column of icons on the left side of the screen. If memory serves me right, the second icon down is a speaker. Pressing this toggles between nav voice on/off. When I'm familiar with the nav area I turn the voice off, and use the physical nav/voice button for direction as needed. Don't know if the larger nav screen works the same.
