Navigation Quirks

Anyone used the "use toll pass" option? It was working when i first got the car but now even if i have it enabled, it tries to direct me over to the payment booths which here in SoCal have been removed.

Any ideas? I've tried deselecting it and then re-adding it under the route options, i've tried it with no directions mapped and with directions running but it still wants me to go via the booth.

Help!

Mine works fine. Try another toll road to see if it consistently in error or is it just tied to the one road you were on. Just a thought.

I have a quirk with my nav/audio head unit. Sometimes when I get in the car the preset station changes from what it is set at (it goes to one of the SXM stations that we aren't using). It might have something to do with the memory seat, but I set the memory seat with the proper station playing. Any ideas? Are the SXM channels tied to the memory seat?

I may be barking up the wrong tree, but is the car parked in a sheltered environment where there is no XM signal at all? I think that when the receiver sees no signal for an extended time it may just lose its memory.

That's a great idea thanks, I never thought of that, as it's always been the same tolls, I go through.

I'll try and report back.

Question here: I have Toll Pass checked, and when I approach a toll it shows the orange TOLL thingy ... but it makes NO attempt to DIRECT ME to the toll LANES ... how does it do this i.e. what should I SEE and where when I do this? Thanks

Before it went weird, it would show a display with the Fast Track Lines with arrows pointing on them.

Now it has arrows pointing to the toll booth and tries to redirect me that way.

Not sure how it shows in other states.

I think it didn't go weird, I had the same situations, some places it directed me trough fast lane, some not , I knew this toll road, that's how I could tell why, in my case the toll booths was recently removed or changed the place where they was before, in some places there was brand new build toll place, I think that's the reason, it's not updated yet in maps. Luckily I have some pics :) This how it showed me that there is just toll place , with no booths, the booths was a few months ago, now removed and who doesn't have a responder, get billed pay by plate, it means they photo your license plate and send a bill to your address, but it's few $ higher than if you would have the responder, so it didn't direct me to the fast line. But I'm 99% sure that when I first got the car, it directed me via the fast track and not the booth.

Unfortunately there are only 3 toll areas near me, and two of them have me directed to the booth where before I'm sure it didn't.

Dealer is saying to pull the multimedia amps which will reset thr nav back to factory, have done it yet.

Still haven't pulled the fuses yet but I did some more testing and I don't think any of my options are actually working.

For example I told it i didn't want to use freeways to get to a local store and the first thing it does is tries to get me on to two different freeways yet I could easily get to this store without going on the freeway.

So finally after about 2 miles away from the freeway it stopped telling me to do a legal U-turn and routed me on streets.

Next, I told it I didn't want to use toll roads, and again because there is a toll road running near the store, it tries to have me take the toll until again until I'm about 2 miles away from it.

Now I know it says minize use and not don't use but even Apple maps can route without freeways or toll roads.

So can I ask a favor and see what happens if you ask it not to use a freeway etc. what does it show on your systems, does it take you straight to a freeway or plots a non-freeway route.

Thanks in advance.

It happened exactly the same with me. I figured it most likely because at the end of route options , there is another 2 options fastest route or shortest route, if I choose fastest route, it overrides your settings to avoid toll roads and freeways and makes you go to freeway, but if you choose shortest route then it's guides you through local roads.
Also it might change if for example at the time of input the navigation sees that there is slow traffic at any of available routes , it might redirect you to freeway.
I did the same thing , ignored the navigations suggestions to go trough freeway, and as I was at some point where it see that going to freeway it's not the fastest route , it recalculates and guides me trough local roads.
Sometimes where the local roads and freeways are so close together you really can't see the difference when you check the fastest and shortest routes overview, you really have to zoom in to see where it's going to guide you under each option.
But when I chose the shortest route, it routes me trough local roads, almost every time.
Also when you go deeper after input of destination, and when you do route overview there is another option that you can exclude the roads from the turn by turn overview, you need to click on each road where you see that it's going to direct you on freeway, it then changes the whole route excluding the roads which might force you to go to freeway.
Some times even if you delete those roads which leading you to freeway it might choose next intersection to direct you to freeway, so after the new route overview have to delete those roads as well until there is no more sense for the navigation to direct you to freeway.
I hope you understood the process I am trying to explain :))))

The latest quirk ... I selected an address from the address book and chose fastest route. At that point, about 3/4 of the screen went black except of some POIs in the black area. Turning the knob to change the scale resulted in a full screen in some large scales, but it was impossible to zoom in.

I finally hit the map/voice button and the screen returned to normal.

On one previous occasion, I had the black screen happen at an intersection when using the navigation. I didn't try the map/voice button then, so I don't know whether it would have recovered. The voice commands continued correctly even though the screen was black on that occasion.

Here is another quirk: while driving an interstate in northern Kentucky it told me to get off at an exit and then get right back on. I-75 was taking a turn to the right as it went under the crossing road, so that the exit and entrance to the interstate formed a straight line and therefore a shorter distance. Even if I had the system set for shortest distance--and I don't think I did--this is unforgivable.

I like the view on the big screen and several other features of the navigation system, but I'll stick with Apple or Google when I am on unknown roads.

OK. So here is a Navigation quirk that I have not seen mentioned on this thread. When I leave for work in the morning my GPS is messed up and shows that I am driving about 500 yards away from where I am. I will get on the freeway and the HUD won't show the speed limit because it doesn't know that I am on the freeway. The NAV screen will show me driving through backyards and crossing streets off the right of where I really am. Then after 5 - 10 minutes it will correct itself. This has been happening since it got cold out and unfortunately the 2015 5.0 has to sit in the driveway with the Audi A4 because we only have a two car garage and the Cadillac and 442 are in there. Poverty sucks...I need to be able to have all 4 cars inside. Anyone else seeing these GPS issues?

Just a guess but it sure sounds like it is having trouble locking on to the satellite from a warm start. Normally this should happen in a minute or 2 however 5-10 is not acceptable nor normal. If the unit is rarely turned on then it may need to boot from a cold start which is much longer. This should help determine if something is wrong.

When you switch the GPS on, the time-to-first-fix varies depending on how long it is since you last used the GPS. To get a fix, the GPS receiver needs a valid almanac, initial location, time, and ephemeris data.

The terms "cold/warm/hot start" indicate how many of these pieces of data the GPS receiver already has. The terms mean different things to different GPS manufacturers.

Cold start - if the GPS not been used for a long time and/or has moved several hundred kilometres it will take some time to get the first fix. In this state, the GPS receiver does not have a current almanac, ephemeris, initial position or time. Older GPS units may take up to an hour to search for satellites, download the almanac and ephemeris data and obtain an initial position, though newer GPS units may require much less than this.

If the GPS receiver has moved several hundred kilometres, its assumptions about which satellites to use will be incorrect and it will have to search for them. Most units will let you enter an approximate location to speed the process.

Warm start - current almanac, initial position, and time are all valid. Ephemeris data is either invalid or only partially valid. Time-to-first-fix is likely to be 30 seconds to 2 minutes depending on satellite availability and the type of GPS receiver.

Hot start - if the receiver has been off for, say, less than an hour time-to-first-fix will likely be 5-20 seconds.

It's happened to me a few times as well - doesn't lock you onto a road. I've never had that happen with my old portable Garmin units!

Has anyone else had the black screen problem that I posted about in post #71 of this thread or is this just happening to me? I had it happen again today.

Thought it was just me. It probably happens 20-30% of the time. Typically gets "lost" within 3-5 minutes of starting and lasts another 5-10 minutes. Usually results in the nav indicating my trajectory 15 degrees off to the right. It results in some pretty amusing screen shots. Here you can see me driving through the Atlantic Ocean and my best attempt at crossing a river Dukes of Hazard style. I've also been through a golf course and driven across lakes.

Are you sure you weren't on ferry :D
It looks really funny, if it wouldn't be sad to have that problem.

Sorry to re-hash an old subject but I thought you might like to have an update..

Took my car to the dealer because of a) the issues with navigation (Fast Track) etc not working and b) my XM would freeze up and won't work until i had changed channels (and no i wasn't in a cloudy or built up area).

So the short story is, dealer said there was an update that fixes those two issues, left my car with them for 3 hours and now everything is working correctly, fast track and radio hasn't cut out for since having it done.

Sorry for the size!!!

Here's what my display says now when i got to a toll booth :

Also, don't know if this is new, i don't use the navigation screen with the Radio split, put now it shows the next turn (it might have done before and i just didn't notice...
