  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I purchased on January 31, New 2014 Genesis R-Spec Genesis(JogDial/Premium) and asked if there was an update for the Nav system and was told no. Now I see that there is an up date I am on NA.06.43.69.001 update 07.43.43.003 Per mapnsoft.

Should the dealer be updating since it is new and I specifically asked? Is this a warranty item?
Love the car just don't feel I should have to pay 169.00 for an update while under 3/36 or 5/60

Thanks

Rich

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Yes the should but they don't like to do it because they want to charge. That is some stupid move from them.

$169? No. It's more like $300+. $169 is JUST the cost of the software. Installation is extra and it can be installed only by the dealer. The software is about a 3 hour install and the dealer applies his book time...so it's not even close to $169.

It seems that (his '14) does not require a visit to the dealer to have the update installed. So, it will cost $169 + S+H

All 2013 and 14 models with the advanced jog/dial command and updated software interface are able to update at home without dealer. It is only 2012 and earlier that required dealer update - which by the way do not get the new features of the 13 & 14 models, only the map update.

This navigation up is crazy. Why doesn't some company (Garmin ) make an interface and make the navigation better. It really is poorly program wise and poor UI (user interface). I've never had factory navigation before. Do all manufacturer's charge for updates? Seems to me if it is always out of date why even have one. My cell phone is ease to use and is always current.
Just venting. :grouphug:

Yes, this is pretty much the state of the market. I have had factory navigation in BMWs and Hondas since 2001. The BMW updates were $200 and the Honda updates are $180 (I think). They source their data mostly from either Here (formerly Navteq) or TeleAtlas (TomTom). Although those two sources update data frequently, the auto manufacturers do not pull data and produce their updates more than annually now. BMW used to do semi-annual updates, but they quit around 2004, if I remember correctly.

Things may be changing a little. Audi's system pulls from Google, and I believe it is near-real-time. And, I also believe it caches data in the car, so you do not have the problem with the phone-based systems of losing navigation in rural areas.

The car UIs are not wonderful, but they do have their strengths over some of the Garmin and phone interfaces. However, I would never own a car without nav, because it is far more accessible and safer to use than either a dedicated Garmin-like device or a phone. I tend to use my car's nav when pulling out my phone would be a hassle. And, I do not like to carry devices (like my Garmin) if it is not necessary.

The Genesis NAV seems to be just like the nav I had in a KIA Sorento. It's advantage is it has a large display and no wires. As far as using it it's almost useless. Always pulls me to interstates even if another route is much faster and shorter. Even when I choose to avoid freeways. Plus it's a 2012 and no text-to-speach!!! My $100 Garmin does that plus shows speed limit. And it has lifetime free updates. So if I really need a nav to find something I just carry my Garmin or print the google directions. I love it when it finally decides to go my way and the time & distance drop. I did this on a trip to sister-in-law, 260 miles. It wanted me to go 75 miles out of the way to stay on a interstate. Dropped 40 minutes and 80 miles when it changed to my way.

^For what is worth, sometime ago I figured an easy way around this issue on my 2009 TECH (should be applicable to 2009-2012 DIS), where if I manipulated the time to destination it seems to correct this problem.

NAVI Menu -> Setting -> Time to Destination -> Set Speeds:

Residential Road = 25 (or you can try 30)
Main Street = 45 (or 50)
Freeway = 70 (or 75)

If I compare the selected NAV route with WAZE or Google maps, I find these settings are almost right on the money as far as distance and time to destination.

The 2013 R-Spec (should applicable to 2014 as well) does not seem to suffer from the same issue, I just select the shortest distance for short trips and fastest time for long trips which seem to solve that particular issue for me..

+1 I did the same a while ago. I forgot about that. My routing has also been totally consistent with Google and Garmin. I have absolutely no complaints with the routing my 2012 Tech chooses.

If I had tweaked this before, I'd forgotten completely about it. Thanks for the tip, guys!
