  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I bought a 2011 Genesis 4.6 (black and black) back in March and although I was reading posts even before I bought the car I am just getting around to registering. I went through the same process in deciding to buy this car as probably most of you. I looked at BMW, Lexus, Infiniti, and others. What really turned me off about BMW was going to BimmerFest and reading what owners said about their cars (brought me to tears). I read all the reviews and watched all the videos. I thought I would give Hyundai a try.

I thought since they were trying to establish a mark in the upscale market they probably were trying harder and definitely priced their car better. People refer to Hyundai as an upstart company. Actually they are a large heavy manufacturing company meaning they have a good QA program, a large engineering staff, computer modeling and design, component testing, specification writing and all of that. The Koreans are very proud of them.

I have not had any problems with the car in 12,000 miles except a nail in a tire. Everything seems to work fine. Since I have had it I changed the oil twice, once at 500, then again at 7,000. I also changed the differential fluid at 500 miles(the differential has a drain plug which is nice), and it seemed somewhat dirty even at that point. In addition, I have changed the air filter and cleaned the MAF. I have been researching on how to change the transmission fluid being a believer in regular transmission servicing. I use Amsoil XL oil and Wix filters. The o-ring with the Wix filters is too fat to work for the filter drain plug, but one does not need to drain the filter anyway before you take it apart. I just leave it alone.

I've been all over and under the car and think it is really nicely designed. One heck of a lot of fuses though located all over the place (I need to make sure I have some spares).

I am very happy with the car but think the seats are a little spartan and the ESC is a little over bearing. By the way, ArmorAll for Leather (spray) does wonders for the seat leather. I am debating on whether or not to use ArmorAll on the dash. I used it on the door seals and when a little got on the dash plastic in spots it turned it very dark and shiny.

I also wish there was an ECU re-flash program out there to get more out of the engine and to slap down the ESC. The transmission is really slow shifting at WOT, but I suppose they programmed it that was to protect it. I looked at getting an after-market cat back system like MagnaFlow (sp?), but sort of decided against it due to the noise or drone. I definately think Borla is too loud, for me anyway.

I would skip the Armorall on the dash, it's way too shiny, I don't like the look of it at all. I prefer products that don't have silicone in them for the dash. I've been using Mothers VLR, and it's much more of a matte finish.

I completely agree with you on this TJ. Armorall applied looks cheap, and way too shiny. Try mothers VLR.

Also heard good things about these 2 products for the dash as well:

There is only one oil filter manufacturer for Genesis sedan, although it is sold under various brand names, including the Hyundai OEM brand. However, there are newer filters with white plastic end caps (although made by same company). The newer ones are apparently inferior to the older ones with black plastic end caps, according to one member.

All of the Genesis Sedan transmissions (you have a ZF model in yours) use synthetic transmission oil, although they don't use the same oil as the Aisin transmissions in the V6 (not sure which synthetic the 2012 Hyundai transmissions use). Because of the synthetic oil, they are designed to go at least 100K miles without changing, and there is no easy way to change it (they are trying to discourage you from changing it).

There was a discussion recently about what to put in the rear differential, and was wondering exactly what product your used?

Thanks for the tips on the dash treatment. I will try it. I agree ArmorAll is too shiny.

I used Amsoil 75W-90 in the differential.

The Wix filter looks different from the Hyundai filter, and also look a little higher quality.

Thanks for the link to the transmission procedure. I found these guys that seem to sell fluid and pans more reasonably.

I also replaced the cabin filter with a Wix. The trick to getting to the cabin filter is to partially close the glove compartment door. The little rubber pieces that need to be removed to fully open the door for access to the cabin filter are actually the stops that the door rests on when it it open. If you try to remove them when they are loaded it is very difficult.

Here are the specs from Hyundai Service website for 2011 4.6:

Differential
Oil type
Hypoid gear oil(API GL-5, SAE 80W/90)

Oil capacity (L)
About0.75~0.80

Regarding the oil filter, apparently the new OEM filters have white endcaps and are a bit inferior. Is that the one you are referring to?

The older OEM filters and the aftermarket filters (both with black end caps) appear to both be made by the same company in Korea. The reasons for that conclusion was discussed in detail here:

Murietta, I'm a little lost here. Did you buy the car new or used? I don't understand why you would change the oil at 500 miles (did you mean 5,000) and why you would change the differential fluid so quickly whether its 500 or 5000 miles. I keep my cars 50,000-60,000 miles and will never change the transmission or differential fluids. I'll probably change the oil every 3500-4000 miles using a 5W-30 synthetic blend.

I don't know much about cars but I've never changed differential fluid as quickly as you. I wouldn't mind buyuing a used car from you though.

Used to be "back in olden times" that you changed oil at 500 miles, after "the break in period". Not sure when that went away, but remember back in the 50's, 60's, 70's, if you got over 75k miles on a car it was a miracle. These days none of the manufactures that I know of requires an early oil change, and almost any car will last 200k plus miles if taken care of.

I highly agree. I would recommend a non oil based product.

Skip the armor all. It will probably do more damage in the long run than it is worth.

A damp cloth is good enough for those surfaces. Or you can buy a good quality product from Mothers or Meguiars.

I would also use a good quality leather conditioner. Just don't put it on your steering wheel!

Enjoy!
